According to a survey commissioned by Keysight Technologies, 76% of space professionals see software test automation as one of the industry’s top challenges. tech4tea.com talks with Keysight’s Greg Patschke about the findings of the survey, the challenges facing engineers, and the industry’s future opportunities.
“Defying Gravity” is an in-depth survey of current and future trends in the space tech industry. The survey analyzes drivers of the growth within the industry, technology trends, and the challenges at hand.
Why did Keysight commission the “Defying Gravity” survey?
Greg Patschke shared that the company wanted to understand the opinions of senior leaders about where electronic system design, test, and measurement could provide value in the satellite and space industry based on current market dynamics.
He said that Keysight has seen a steady ramp in innovation and non-government, private commercial investment in the satellite industry during the last five years and wanted to confirm the industry’s transition from large, geosynchronous earth orbit (GEO) to smaller low earth orbit (LEO) satellites enabled by the drastic reduction in launch costs.

I took the new Toshiba Satellite U840 ultra book for a ride last week. After a week of bringing it along for meetings and presentations, it proved a good balance between portability and performance.
Toshiba Satellite U840 Series ultrabook - portability and performance.
The Satellite U840 Series of ultrabooks is Toshiba’s first line of 14-inch ultrabooks – after the computer maker’s debut into the ultrabook arena with its 13.3-inch Z830 ultrabook last year.

Compared with its 1.12kg predecessor, the 1.59kg Satellite U840 is heavier and only slightly bigger, but is considerably more affordable.
The Z830 costs almost twice the U840, which starts at S$1,399.
The Windows 7 Satellite U840 is comparable with other ultrabooks on the market (such as the Samsung Series 5 Ultra and HP Envy 14 Spectre) in terms of appearance and performance.
Most ultrabooks feature similar metallic brushed aluminum casings.
But the U840 weighs lighter because it does not include an optical drive.
The Toshiba Satellite U840 is what an ultrabook is meant to be – a good balance between portability and performance. It has the needed performance to excel in daily business and personal needs; yet is portable enough lug around in a bag without breaking your back (or your bank).

Toshiba has unveiled today its first 14-inch ultrabooks – from the Satellite U840 Series. Available from mid-May, prices will start from S$1,399 – depending on configuration.

Toshiba Satellite U840 Ultrabook - S$1,399
At a weight starting from 1.59kg and thinness of 19.9mm, the Windows 7 Satellite U840 series offers a mix of style, portability and performance.
Metallic brushed aluminum chasis on the outside.
The Toshiba Satellite U840 is based on 2nd Generation Intel Core processors, and sports a metallic silver colour on the outside with a brushed aluminum chasis that provides strength and durability of lugging it around.
The Satellite U840 uses DDR3 memory, and offers a choice of 128GB solid state drive or Hybrid HDD with 16GB solid state drive, to couple responsive experience with increased durability and energy efficiency.
Illuminated tiled keyboard allows typing even in the dark.
Paired with Toshiba’s new Hi-Speed Start Technology, the Satellite U840 can power on and get users up and running at work or home in just seconds.
Despite being ultra-portable, the Satellite U840 is equipped with Bluetooth and WLAN plus a selection of full-size ports including HDMI and 3 USB ports, one of which is a USB 3.0 port.
The system also includes Toshiba’s USB Sleep & Charge technology to give users the freedom to charge their smartphones even while the system is powered down.

The GoFlex Satellite mobile wireless storage has been named an International CES Innovations 2012 Design and Engineering Awards Honouree.
Products entered in this prestigious program are judged by a panel of independent industrial designers, engineers and members of the media to honour outstanding design and engineering in cutting edge consumer electronics products across 32 product categories.
Started in 1976, the Innovations Design and Engineering Awards are sponsored by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA),“A first for the industry, the GoFlex Satellite drive extends the limited capacity of mobile devices by wirelessly streaming media without the use of an external power source,” said Patrick Connolly, vice president and general manager of Seagate Branded Solutions. the producer of the International CES, the world’s largest consumer technology tradeshow.
The Seagate GoFlex Satellite external hard drive will be displayed at the Innovations Showcase in the Venetian Ballroom during the 2012 International CES, which runs January 10-13, 2012 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The GoFlex Satellite was first announced in end-August. The 500GB version became available in Singapore in September at S$299.

Seagate today announced the first battery-powered external hard drive to wirelessly extend the storage capacity of any Wi-Fi enabled mobile device. The 500 GB GoFlex Satellite will be widely available from mid-September at S$299. Pre-orders can be made during COMEX 2011.
With 500GB and Wi-Fi access over 802.11 b/g/n and a rechargeable battery, this latest member of the GoFlex family connects wirelessly to devices via the use of the free GoFlex Media app—available now on iTunes, the Apple App Store and Android Market—or a web browser.
Many tablets are hampered by the limited on-board storage capacity and lack of connection ports to connect to external storage devices – even though they are popularly used for media consumption.
“No longer will a consumer feel as though it is a compromise to purchase a lower capacity tablet or iPad. With GoFlex Satellite, people will be able to carry their entire media library with them without the need for wires or the web at a fraction of the cost of adding 3G or purchasing or a higher capacity tablet,” said BanSeng Teh, senior vice president and managing director of Asia Pacific and Japan, Seagate Technology.
As a companion for mobile devices, the GoFlex Satellite is capable of providing hours of entertainment for up to three connections. With a stand-by battery life of up to 25 hours, the powerful lithium polymer battery delivers up to five hours of continuously streaming video.
To help with extending battery life, the freeGoFlex Media App provides a progressive download feature, which temporarily loads the video on to the Android device it is being streamed to, allowing the drive to go into stand-by mode.
Streaming over the Internet has enabled video access for tablet owners, but the quality is at the mercy of the Internet connection, be it over Wi-Fi or 3G/4G. With more connected devices per hotspot, it’s often difficult to watch video without choppiness or pixilation. Rather than rely on a buffered stream from a distant provider, GoFlex Satellite mobile storage wirelessly serves up media content as a local attached storage for up to three devices at the same time.

Available for Apple iOS devices such as iPad, iPhone and iPod touch and any Android devices; the GoFlex Media app provides a seamless way to connect the mobile wireless storage to your mobile devices. Those that currently use an Android smartphone or tablet can access content on a GoFlex Satellite device through its web browser.
Media Sync software
The easy-to-use Media Sync software, also included free with purchase, makes grabbing media from a Windows PC or Mac OS X computer a breeze. Wherever the files are stored, whether that is a file structure of your own creation or in an iTunes library, the Media Sync software will load all of your desired music, videos, photos and documents on to the GoFlex Satellite drive.
Media Sync is easily configured to only place files on the drive that are compatible with your iOS or Android device. Even music and videos purchased through iTunes can be loaded to theGoFlex Satellite drive and will play on all authorized devices.
Loading Media
For rapid loading of media content, the wireless mobile storage comes equipped with the superfast USB 3.0 cable to get files from the computer to the GoFlex Satellite drive. The USB 3.0 cable will also continue to work with USB 2.0 ports and is easily removed for portability. In addition to the USB 3.0 cable, the GoFlex Satellite drive comes complete with a car charger and a compact wall charger.
