A study from CA Technologies reveals the application economy demands a new approach to security in Asia Pacific & Japan.

Excerpt of a graphical representation of the survey results for APJ. To download/view the full enlarged infographic, click on the image above.
Mobility, APIs and Business Enablement are sparking new attitudes towards security and are driving an increase in investment in these areas.
“As more organisations understand the impact of the application economy in the increasingly connected Asia Pacific & Japan business landscape, security is moving from being a back-room afterthought to being a core business function. In the world of ever-increasing connected devices, organisations will leverage security to deliver better customer experience and contribute to positive business outcomes,” said Kenneth Arredondo, president & general manager, Asia Pacific & Japan, CA Technologies.
Protection is still the main driver for security, but a new CA Technologies study reveals that Asia Pacific & Japan (APJ) organisations are approaching security from new perspectives, recognising its potential to deliver frictionless and positive customer experience and contribute to business growth in the increasingly competitive application economy.
The study is titled “8 Steps to Modernize Security for the Application Economy” and is sponsored by CA Technologies.
The study shows how mobility, APIs and business growth have brought a balanced view of control and enablement to security, leading to an increase in investment by APJ organisations.
Key findings from the study show four key trends influencing the perception and implementation of security in APJ enterprises:

The SanDisk iXpand Flash Drive has a Lightning and USB connector and easily increases the memory storage for your iPhone or iPad. Available now in Singapore in 16GB (S$88), 32GB (S$128) and 64GB (S$188).

The iXpand Flash Drive is a powerful, yet simple-to-use solution that quickly transfers photos and videos from an iPhone or iPad to a Mac or PC — all without cables, Internet connections, or bandwidth limitations.
The SanDisk iXpand Flash Drive is the storage company’s first USB flash drive designed specifically for the iPhone and iPad.
“According to IDC, nearly three-quarters of all images are now captured on smartphones and tablets. With this significant increase in mobile-generated content, consumers are looking for easy ways to manage it all,” said Mark Eng, Country Manager, Singapore and Malaysia, SanDisk.
First released in the US at the end of 2014, the iXpand is now available in Singapore.
The USB flash drive makes it easy to offload content from your iPhone or iPad to free up the storage of the device, and to upload additional media or documents to the mobile device.
You can also playback music, video and photos; or read documents directly from the device while it is plugged into the Lightning connector of the iPhone/iPad.
On the desktop/notebook, the flash drive has a USB 2.0 port to plug in like any USB thumb drive.

The vision of Intel Education’s initiatives is: Empowering Tomorrow’s Innovators. Here’s a peek into how Intel is plugging into the education scene.

From left: Eileen Lento, Ph.D; John Galvin; Sam Al-Schamma – key education advocates and leaders in Intel.
To most people, including myself, Intel is the leading chip maker that manufactures the processors in the computers that we use.
The company is also heavily involved in helping educational organisations and government bodies harness technology to reinvent teaching and learning for the younger generation.
Intel’s contribution to Education
To improve education in more than 70 countries, Intel and the Intel Foundation has, in the past decade, invested more than US$1billion, contributed more than 4 million employee volunteer hours, trained 14 million teachers, and helped 5 million people gain digital literacy.
I had the pleasure of listening to key executives in Intel Education over lunch earlier this week during the Bett Asia Leadership Summit in Singapore at the Marina Bay Sands.
John Galvin – a vice president of the Sales and Marketing Group and general manager of Intel Education at Intel Corporation – hosted the lunch and shared his experience in setting global strategy and implementation of innovative technology solutions to advance education worldwide.

A recent research by GlobalWebIndex (GWI), a market research company specialising in online consumer behaviour claims that 80% of WeChat’s young users said it was critical for them to be contactable at all times.
“WeChat has witnessed a remarkable growth rate during this period especially among the youth generation, with WeChat’s efficient and entertaining platform continuing to attract users on a massive scale. We are excited about WeChat’s strong growth momentum both globally and throughout Singapore, and expect to see it adding more users in the coming quarters,” said Jason Mander, Head of Trends at GlobalWebIndex.
GWI is a multi-market research company, covering 32 markets and representing 89% of the global Internet population.
Focusing on Singapore specifically, WeChat is most popular with 16 to 34 year olds, with this age group dominating nearly half of the WeChat user base.
According to GWI, WeChat had experienced significant growth with an active user base increase of 156% globally, and a staggering 499% in Singapore between Q1 2013 to Q3 2014.
Nearly a quarter (23%) of the world’s Internet users and 39% within the APAC region now actively use the app.

Simon Davies – Vice President for ASEAN, Greater China and Korea, Salesforce – brought the latest updates and insights from one of the leading companies in cloud computing and CRM.

Salesforce Essentials was held at Marina Bay Sands in Singapore. Photo: Andrew Ng.
Newly launched solutions were also showcased during a Cloud Expo tour, while local Asian customers shared how Salesforce had transformed their business and helped them connect with their customers in new ways.
“It was great to hear some of the latest updates on CRM and their customised “Wealth Management” module. What I found interesting was when Simon Davies briefly chatted about some innovations where Siam Bank used their cloud to bring financial apps direct to the end customers,” recalls Andrew Ng – tech4tea.com – who attended the media briefing.
Talking points included updates, innovations and initiatives from Dreamforce 2014, as well as how Salesforce had grown exponentially to become one of the top 10 fastest growing software companies in the world.
Also discussed were tech trends that Salesforce saw affecting businesses in the future, including the internet of customers, wearables and increased mobility.
The company also shared how Singapore and Asia as a whole was important to Salesforce’s global business, and what Singapore/Asia customers look for in their cloud, social and mobile solutions.
For reference, at the end of this post is the press release for Dreamforce 2014 last month in San Francisco, US.

Our phone numbers are something we hand out readily to our contacts, yet we would like to protect them from misuse. StitMe is a service that enables users to control who can call you and when, without divulging your real number.

StitMe allows you to keep your mobile number private and control who can call you and when.
I was having tea the other day with Gurtaj Singh and he caught my interest with this app that he had launched just recently in the US.
Clean break
Is your kid going to college and you’re worried that he/she will end up bullied and harassed by calls from friends or ex-boyfriends/girlfriends?
Get him/her to use StitMe instead.
That way, should/when they break up, the other party would not be able to harass your kid through calling.
It’s called StitMe and is not available outside of US yet but it sounded like it had great potential to solve one of the biggest dilemmas of the modern age.
You want as many friends, colleagues and potential contacts to be able to contact you, but you don’t want to receive calls from unwarranted telemarketers because your telephone number had been harvested and compiled in some call list that are being sold or circulated without your consent.
Worse still, in the US, anybody can use your telephone number to do a reverse number lookup (the equivalent of a Whois query) and get personal information about you like your residential address etc.
StitMe is compatible with iOS and Android devices.
Currently it is only available in the US.
This is where StitMe comes in – users of the free service need not hand out their real telephone numbers anymore.
Between two StitMe users, all you give out is your StitMe User ID.

Samsung Singapore showcased in Singapore today a few of the devices unveiled during IFA 2014 – namely the Galaxy Note 4, Galaxy Note Edge.
Also available for hands-on were the Gear S smartwatch and Gear Circle Bluetooth wireless earphones.

Samsung Galaxy Note Edge with its innovative curved-edged screen, with Montblanc leather flip covers for the Note 4 in the background.
Both the Galaxy Note 4 and Note Edge now have the same Quad HD (2560 x 1440 pixels) as the LG G3 but on a larger 5.7-inch screen, and the S Pen and S Note have been improved to enhance their functionality and productivity.

Samsung Gear Circle, with the ear buds “stuck” together magnetically, can be worn around the neck like a necklace when not in use.
The rear camera now has 16 megapixels and the front has 3.7 megapixels with an f1.9 lens.
By the way, the processor that’s going to ship to Singapore is the Snapdragon with 3GB RAM.
The Note Edge really does look novel with the sharp display on the curved screen that wraps around the thin right edge of the phablet.
The Gear S smartphone runs on the Tizen OS and has its own nano-SIM slot so you can place and receive calls independently of a smartphone.
It can also store and play music directly and be paired with the Gear Circle.
First Impressions:
Having used the Galaxy S4, Note 3 and now using the S5, I find the Note 4 and Note Edge exciting new additions to the Galaxy flagship devices.

Was having lunch last week with John Ruthven, Eugene Ho of SAP, Bob Aubrey of Mazars and a few other journos from the media – when Bob mentioned a study that Mazars did in 2013 about Millennials.

If you’re a “Millennial”, how often do you use social media? Click on image to view enlarged version.
The study was conducted in 2013 and approached 6,900 Millennial employees in 64 countries worldwide, out of which 3,010 responded – that’s a remarkably high return rate.

Bob Aubrey, Partner & Practice Leader, People Development Consulting, Mazars. With more than 20 years’ experience in leadership and people development consulting, Dr Aubrey is also an entrepreneur, writer and professor.
The “Millennials” or, otherwise known as Gen Y (Generation Y) are defined in this study as young people born between the beginning of the 1980s and the mid-90s.
Since the Gen Y will account for a huge chunk of the world’s population and workforce in the near future, the demography is relevant to global companies such as SAP that provides business IT solutions to large enterprises and organisations employing these Millennials.
Currently, Millennials make up more than half of our workforce. This is expected to increase to 75% in 2025.
It would be interesting to watch how these statistics change over time to observe the underlying trend, although the result would not be surprising, given the increasing popularity of social media amongst the increasingly IT-savvy working population.
Here are some additional statistics surrounding Millennials.
