The system consists of a device with a camera, temperature screening and a scanner that reads the identification card of a visitor for an integrated safe entry experience. As the solution is also a self-service system, workplaces can reduce manpower managing entry stations.

Canon’s new all-in-one entry-control system: FACTS.
Canon Singapore announced today the launch of a digital check-in solution which enables businesses to facilitate contactless, fast and easy temperature screening and entry/exit recording for staff and customers.
Benefits
- Single system to screen visitors’ temperature and facilitate safe entry check in.
- Self-service system lets workplaces reduce manpower at entry stations.
- Contactless and fast: Entry experience can be completed within seconds.
The solution, which is known as Facial Access Control Temperature System (FACTS), uses an 8-inch tablet which combines the functions of a camera, infrared thermography, near-field communication (NFC) device, barcode scanner and data storage.
The tablet is a third-party device distributed by Canon Singapore.
To check in, visitors should stand within 0.5 to 0.7metre from the device to have their temperature screened via the infrared thermography.
If the visitor’s temperature is within a predetermined range, a green text box will be shown to indicate that the visitor has passed the temperature screening.
Why FACTS?
A key barrier to having a fast digital-check in process is the need to use multiple devices such as a thermometer, camera and barcode scanner to get the visitor’s temperature and identity separately.
By using FACTS, visitors can complete their safe entry digital check-in within a few seconds.
This is possible with a software which integrates several functions including facial detection, infrared thermography, barcode scanning and data entry and storage in the device.
This will be accompanied by an automated voice message which says, “temperature normal”.
The device will then request for the visitor’s identity, which can be quickly obtained by scanning the visitor’s identification cards such as NRIC (the latest digital version is also accepted) and driver’s license at the barcode scanner.
The device also can be set to automatically take a photo of the visitor, if required.
It takes just a few seconds to complete the entire process.
FACTS can also be used to facilitate the use of Singapore’s national digital check-in system, SafeEntry, to help retail stores, offices and other businesses comply with safe management measures at the workplace.
More details below from the press release.

Microsoft Build 2020 was the first time the annual developers’ event was held completely online, because of COVID-19. Here are some interesting snippets from Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella during his keynote address for the conference.

“Already, we’ve seen something like two years’ worth of digital transformation in just two months. And we’ve seen how critical digital technology is in the three phases of this crisis, from emergency response to the recovery phase to the reimagining the world going forward,” said Satya Nadella, Microsoft CEO at Build 2020.
How has developers come together with those on the frontlines in the fight against COVID-19?
Here were some examples that Nadella highlighted.
- At Johns Hopkins University, epidemiologists and software developers created a canonical dashboard to track the spread of COVID-19.
- Adaptive Biotechnologies is using cloud compute and AI to decode the immune system’s response to the virus.
- In the United Kingdom, a cross-section of manufacturers adjusted their production lines to build ventilators for the NHS, using mixed reality to guide workers through the process.
- The NBA is using the power of the cloud and Xbox to engage fans and maintain the joy of the game.
What would developers need to be capable of going forward?

Imec has combined advanced machine learning algorithms and innovations in chip design to extend its secure proximity portfolio with next-generation high-precision and low-power ultra wideband technology.

“UWB’s power consumption, chip size and associated cost have been prohibitive factors to the technology’s adoption, especially when it comes to the deployment of wireless ranging applications. For one, imec’s brand-new UWB chip developments result in a significant reduction of the technology’s footprint based on digital-style RF-concepts: we have been able to integrate an entire transceiver – including three receivers for angle-of-arrival measurements – on an area of less than 1 square mm. Importantly, our design also targets a very low power consumption: less than 4mW/20mW (Tx/Rx) – which is up to 10 times better than today’s implementations. And it builds on imec’s long standing expertise in secure distance bounding to increase the technology’s resilience to potential relay attacks,” explained Christian Bachmann, program manager for Secure Proximity and Sensitive Networks programs at imec.
Ultra wideband technology is perfectly suited to support a variety of high accuracy and secure wireless ranging use-cases.
“Using machine learning, we created smart anchor selection algorithms that detect the (non) line-of-sight between UWB anchors and the mobile devices that are being tracked. Building on that knowledge, the ranging quality is estimated, and ranging errors are corrected. Since our approach also comes with machine learning enabled features that enable adaptive tuning of the network’s physical layer parameters, the right steps can then be initiated to mitigate those ranging errors – for instance by tuning the anchors’ radios,” explained Professor Eli De Poorter from IDLab.
Think of the ‘smart lock’ solutions commonly used in automotive – automatically unlocking a car’s doors as its owner approaches, while locking the car when the owner moves away.
While UWB is inherently more difficult to compromise than some alternatives, its potential has largely remained untapped because of its higher power consumption and larger footprint.
The innovations imec introduces today mark an important step to unlocking the technology’s full potential.
More details below from the press release.
