This year’s Hungry Handsets study finds that:

  • Smartphones trump tablets in terms of data consumption and generation
  • Apple’s iPhone 5 and Samsung’s GALAXY SIII goes head to head against each other at the top of the data utilisation list
  • Data upload has grown, as users generate more data.

This latest analysis by Arieso into mobile data use also reveals that 40% of all data is consumed by only 1% of users, although LTE is starting to take the strain.

I spoke with Dr. Michael Flanagan, the study author and Arieso CTO about the report.

He observed that the data crunch in the wireless industry started by the launch of the iPhone was not abating; and the study revealed that increasingly sophisticated devices are unleashing unprecedented levels of user demand.

He cautioned that the particular results in this study corresponded to the specific market that was studied, and that these results could vary depending on a number of circumstances (including morphologies, available devices, regional customer behaviors, and socio-economic user factors).

“Yet again we found that novel usage patterns, new technologies and regional idiosyncrasies are conspiring to make life increasingly difficult for mobile operators trying to meet evolving customer expectations,” said study author and Arieso CTO, Dr. Michael Flanagan.

As such, these results are intended to be illustrative rather than definitive.

Dr. Flanagan urged network operators to embark upon similar subscriber and network evaluation programs in order to determine the clear and present data demands being placed on their networks as well as the most appropriate response strategies to best satisfy this demand.

OpenNet completes initial rollout of Singapore Nationwide Fibre Network

With the completion of the initial rollout, OpenNet has achieved 95 percent coverage of Singapore’s residential and non-residential premises (as at 30 June 2012) in three and a half years.

OpenNet’s focus for Singapore’s Next Generation Nationwide Broadband Network (Next Gen NBN) is now on the remaining 5% and new premises.

While roll-out to 95% of Singaporean premises was on schedule, there have been some delays in reaching the remaining premises.

OpenNet has, however, recently reached an agreement with its Key Sub-contractor to roll-out fibre to the balance 5% premises by mid-2013.

“As users enjoy a richer and smoother broadband experience, OpenNet is proud to be a contributor to the transformation of Singapore into an intelligent nation and global city,” said Mark Blake, CEO, OpenNet.

The coverage information is being updated and from 1st November 2012 premise owners may check OpenNet’s portal at www.opennet.com.sg for specific coverage details.

A letter will also be sent to homeowners when fibre roll-out to their building has been completed.

Homeowners may then approach their preferred Internet Service Provider to subscribe to fibre broadband services, including a free first pass installation of the fibre termination point.

I was at the pre-opening preview of tech@vogue in nex Mall last Friday afternoon.

What caught my eye was this demo booth that Belkin has set up to provide a preview and hands-on experience of some of the home automation and networking products that it will be introducing into Singapore towards the end of this year.

These include WeMo, which was announced at this year’s CES 2012 at Las Vegas, the @TV, which provides a new way to watch, record and experience television content, as well as the AC1200 DB Wi-Fi Dual-Band AC+ Gigabit Router.

These Wi-Fi enabled gadgets allow you to use your iPhone or iPad to remotely switch on/off your wall power outlets from outside your homes.

The @TV can be controlled using both iOS devices and Android devices when viewing or recording television content.

SingTel launches 4G service for smartphones

SingTel officially launches Singapore’s first 4G service for smartphones and reins in data usage by reducing 12GB data limit.

SingTel is also introducing new Flexi and iFlexi plans with reduced data bundles from 1 July 2012.

From tomorrow (5 June 2012), customers who purchase a 4G-enabled handset with a SingTel Flexi and iFlexi plan will be able to enjoy the 4G service.

Three handsets will be available at launch: HTC One XL, LG Optimus LTE and Samsung Galaxy S2 LTE.

4G LTE network

SingTel’s 4G service will provide mobile Internet access that is up to five times faster than existing 3G-based smartphone services, with one-fifth of the network latency.

“We need to break away from the traditional one-size-fits-all approach, which is not sustainable in the long term. Today, 64 per cent of mobile data on our network is consumed by 10 per cent of our subscribers. This prevents the remaining 90 per cent from enjoying the full benefits of the network. With our tiered pricing model, subscribers will pay for what they use, and this ultimately allows us to keep prices for our plans the same over time despite rising network costs,” explained Yuen Kuan Moon, SingTel’s CEO Consumer Singapore.Users can enjoy theoretical download speeds of up to 75Mbps and typical download speeds between 3.4Mbps and 12Mbps.

SingTel will also introduce its Priority Pass traffic priority feature for the 4G service next year.

This will provide subscribers with priority for their data traffic when the network is loaded, thus ensuring smoother streaming and downloads.

Islandwide rollout of SingTel’s 4G network is expected to be completed in early 2013.

In areas where 4G has not yet been deployed, users will fallback to 3G connectivity with download speeds of up to 42Mbps.

Data bundle cutback

Data bundles for most of SingTel’s Flexi plans have been reduced drastically from 12GB to a range of 2GB to 12GB, although the number of bundled SMS has been increased.

“At the same time, heavy users will benefit from the significantly reduced excess usage rates. Data traffic on our mobile networks has been growing at 62 percent each year since 2010 due to the tremendous growth of smartphones, tablets and mobile content. By encouraging fair usage of the network, we will be able to deliver consistently high-quality services for our customers,” Yuen said.Charges for data usage beyond bundled allowances have been revised to $5.35 per gigabyte from 1 July to 31 December 2013, and subsequently to $10.70/GB from 1 January 2013.

Approximately 10 per cent of SingTel’s subscribers who are heavy SMS users will save from the new improved SMS bundles.

The plans will be available to all new and re-contracting customers from 1 July 2012, and will replace existing 3G Flexi and iFlexi plans.

So if you don’t want to relinquish the existing 12GB data bundle, you can let the existing contract run in perpetuity – but you’ll have to forego the handset subsidies that come with re-contracting.

Mr Yuen noted that based on current usage patterns, 90 per cent of subscribers should not incur higher charges, as their data consumption does not exceed the new bundles.

This is following the official launch of its Tata Global Network – Gulf (TGN-Gulf) and Eurasia (TGN-EA) cables.

The TGN-Gulf cable sub-sea cable system connects the Gulf to Mumbai, India and onward to the rest of the Tata Global Network (TNG).

“Our customers, whether a European auto-manufacturer, an Asian hotel group or a large U.S. financial services firm, need to compete in global markets and are demanding faster and more reliable worldwide connectivity,” says Vinod Kumar, Managing Director and CEO, Tata Communications. The TGN-EA cable connects Europe to India, through Egypt, bringing increased capacity, resilience and enhanced communications links to not only the Middle East, but to the rest of the world. It will initially offer speeds of up to 10Gbps.

Tata Communications is a global communications service provider that owns and operates the world’s largest subsea cable network.

TNG covers nearly 20% of the world’s Internet routes reaching over 240 countries and territories. These countries constitute 99.7 per cent of the world’s GDP.

The completion of the final link across Egypt enables Tata Communications to offer its customers unique access to a wholly-owned express route cable from Europe to India with improved latency, redundancy and scalability.

In conjunction with the company’s recently launched TGN-Gulf these routes will cater to the increasing demand for voice, video and data services in and out of the Gulf region.

“Companies and carriers in developed and emerging economies require the confidence and security delivered by a wholly-owned network such as Tata Communications’ TGN,” added Kumar.The round-the-world ring also offers city-to-city connections in contrast to more traditional networks which only link cable landing stations.

This approach is more cost-effective, flexible and provides a faster time to market delivery, as well as being easier to maintain and manage.

The 9,280 km TGN-EA system which links Europe and India, running across the Mediterranean and the Middle East, uses fibre-optic technology based on microscopic glass fibres as thin as a strand of human hair, and offers customers the lowest levels of latency with RTD around 92 msec with speeds from 2Mbit/s to 10Gbit/s available.

The company rebranded itself with a change in corporate logo during CES 2012, and a refocus onto developing “People-Inspired Products”.

Founder Pipkin, now President and CEO of the company, initiated the rebranding.

“The new Belkin logo, also known as PIP for ‘People-Inspired Products’, is an image made of dots configured to create a universal symbol of a person.
