Chua Sock Koong, Group CEO, Singtel Group, giving her opening remarks at the launch of the Singtel Cyber Security Institute.
The CSI is a hybrid between an advanced cyber range and an educational institute.
“Based on our engagements with companies in Singapore, more than 85% do not have robust cyber response plans nor the opportunity to conduct realistic drills to test and sharpen such plans. This lack of cyber preparedness is worsened by the severe global shortfall of trained cyber security experts, which Forbes puts at some 1 million in 2016. This is why we’ve stepped up to the plate. We know we have to help companies secure themselves against a potential slew of increasingly sophisticated cyber attacks,” said Bill Chang, Chief Executive Officer, Group Enterprise at Singtel.
Singtel boasts that the CSI is the first-of–its-kind in the region to test and train companies in dealing with sophisticated cyber threats.
Housed in a permanent space of over 10,000 sq ft, the institute provides cyber skills development and education programmes tailored to the varying needs of company boards, C-suite management, technology and operational staff.
Boards and C-suite level participants will be trained in the areas of cyber threat awareness, risk management, business continuity planning and crisis communications preparation.
The cyber operations team will be trained in defence and response capabilities to sharpen their skills.
In conjunction with the launch of the CSI, Singtel announced that it is the first company in Singapore to work with the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore on the Cyber Security Associates and Technologists (CSAT) Programme to train infocomm professionals in cyber security.

Dr Yaacob Ibrahim, Minister for Communications and Information, delivering his speech to open the new Singtel Cyber Security Institute.
Under this programme, Singtel will train fresh infocomm technology professionals and equip them with basic cyber security skills.

The suvey found that one in three people have suffered data loss and 11% are willing to pay $500 or more to recover their lost files.

With the growing number of PCs and mobile devices per household, new survey highlights people value data more than hardware.
The global study sponsored by Acronis, a global leader in hybrid cloud data protection, reveals a growing understanding about the value of, and attitudes toward, the protection of personal data on computers, mobile phones and tablet devices.
Nearly half of survey respondents have more than four devices in a household to protect and 45 percent of survey respondents fear losing photos and videos the most. Security and privacy were cited as key requirements for backing up data.
Emerging concerns for personal data protection
The traditional fears of hardware failure and accidental deletion are no longer the sole reasons people fear data loss.

Oracle ERP Cloud streamlines RedMart’s business processes, reduces IT costs, and improves business agility.

“Large, mid-sized, and start-up companies are turning to Oracle for cloud-based solutions to better manage their resources to improve the efficiency of their operations. We are happy that Redmart has chosen Oracle ERP Cloud. It clearly outlines Redmart’s vision to modernize their finance and procurement processes to propel the company to the next level of growth,” said Neeraj Shaabi, Regional Managing Director for ASEAN and Sage, Oracle.
RedMart, one of Singapore’s largest online supermarkets, has chosen Oracle Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) Cloud to fuel the company’s growth.
“We are glad to have achieved the success we have today, but we are still growing and constantly exploring how to further improve our internal operations. Being a startup, business priorities tend to change quickly to respond to the competitive needs of the market. Our systems need to be flexible to match up with our priorities. Technology is at the heart of our business, and we need to constantly strengthen it in order to grow, and we’re glad that Oracle is along that journey with us,” said Jim Boland, Head of Finance, RedMart.
Oracle Enterprise Resource Planning Cloud will serve as a key business platform for RedMart’s growth.
RedMart is a successful start-up in Singapore that serves as an e-commerce platform which allows customers to buy groceries and household products, including fresh and frozen food, personal care, health and wellness, baby, and beverage, and pet products online.
Since its launch in 2011, RedMart has grown 10-20% month-over-month and more than doubled each year.
Previously, the legacy ERP system could not scale to the high transaction volume in line with the company’s growth, did not have the capability to produce useful reports, and was not flexible enough for the company’s fast changing business priorities.
RedMart needed to improve system performance and flexibility to enable further expansion of the business.

The payment service from Samsung set to expand globally in 2016 to new countries and partners.

In 2016, Samsung Pay will be expanding to new countries and major payment networks such as American Express.
In 2016, Samsung Pay will start global expansion beginning with China in March, followed by Australia, Brazil, Singapore, Spain and the U.K. later in the year.
“Since its introduction last year, Samsung Pay has changed the way people pay and use their smartphones. We’ve already seen significant consumer adoption and we continue to see great momentum. Our aim is to expand Samsung Pay to even more locations around the world, and our customers should expect to see more features in the year to come,” said InJong Rhee, EVP and Head of R&D, Software and Services of Mobile Communications Business at Samsung Electronics.
Canada will be added to the new launch roadmap.
According to Samsung Electronics, Samsung Pay now has about five million registered users over 500 million dollars processed in the first six months, showing a strong adoption rate in South Korea and the U.S since the launch of the payment service in these two countries in August and September 2015 respectively.
Samsung Pay is currently available on select Galaxy devices including S6, S6 edge, S6 edge+, Note5 as well as premium and mid-range options such as the 2016 models of both Galaxy A5 and A7.
Samsung Pay will also expand its enhanced services to more than just credit or debit cards, adding transit passes, coupons and membership cards to its available payment modes.
Samsung Pay is now available on Google Play as a free download for compatible devices.
The 2016 versions of the A5 and A7 smartphones will be compatible with Samsung Pay. Seen here at the launch of the A3, A5 and A7 in Singapore.

52% of Millennial parents in Singapore surveyed believe their children are more likely to be bullied online than on a playground and 56% worry their children will give out too much personal information to strangers.

Norton Cybersecurity Insights Report reveals children are the weakest link in family cybersecurity.
Findings from the Norton Cybersecurity Insights Report 2015 highlighted parental concerns about their children in the online world.
“In the last year, Norton has seen the online safety awareness levels of parents increase rapidly as technology firmly cements itself in the family home,” said Gavin Lowth, Vice President, Norton Consumer and Small Business, Asia Pacific and Japan.
Cyberbullying, online predators and privacy are some of the biggest issues parents in Singapore are grappling with as bullying moves from the playground to the online world.
Parents are concerned about their children being lured into meeting a stranger in the outside world (52 percent) and more parents are worried that their children will be bullied online (46 percent) than if their children take on the role as the online bully (38 percent).
The Norton Cybersecurity Insights Report is an online survey of 17,125 device users aged 18+ across 17 markets, commissioned by Norton by Symantec.
“Parents are grappling with Cyberbullying, Online Predators and Privacy in Singapore,” said Gavin Lowth (in the photo), Vice President, Norton Consumer and Small Business, Asia Pacific and Japan; at the Symantec office in Suntec City in Singapore.
