Last week, I popped down to Canberra Primary School to take a look at how Dell works with the school and Playware Studios Asia to design an educational platform for immersive learning in the digital edge.

The interior of the 4Di Lab at Canberra Primary School.
During the visit, we checked out the 4Di Lab which is powered by Dell solutions and Playware Studios Asia’s 3DHive technology.
Impressions:
This is an interesting collaboration between the public sector, a hardware supplier and a software solutions provider.

The all-touch BlackBerry Z30 is the new flagship smartphone from BlackBerry and features a 5-inch display, 2880 mAh battery, and the latest version 10.2 of the BlackBerry 10 operating system.
Available in Singapore from 10 October at S$828 (without contract).

BlackBerry’s new flagship: Z30 with 5-inch SuperAMOLED display, 1280 x 720 resolution at 295ppi.
Key new features of the BlackBerry Z30 include the BlackBerry Priority Hub, which can learn what conversations and people are important to you – making it fast and easy to find the messages and information you need.
Hands-on
I tried out the BlackBerry Z30 and found the bigger screen useful in digesting information and browsing the Web.
The BlackBerry 10 interface made it useful to interact with the phone, offering one-swipe access to the most commonly needed information, such as notifications, messages, settings and app switching – making multi-tasking easy to get round.
Version 10.2 of BlackBerry 10 OS makes things even more efficient by prioritising conversations and notifications in the Priority Hub, and allowing previews of messages as it arrives from within any other apps, and even immediate replying to BBM messages again within other apps.
The BlackBerry 10 OS version 10.2 will be made available for the BlackBerry Z10 as well.
Physically, the BlackBerry Z30 measures 140.7 x 72 x 9.4 mm and weighs 170g.
BlackBerry Natural Sound creates an immersive experience for music, videos, apps and games, and makes BBM Video chats sound more natural and realistic, with nuances and variations in tone clearly audible.
With the largest battery ever on a BlackBerry smartphone, you can get up to 25 hours of mixed use, and BlackBerry’s new antenna technology dynamically tunes reception to give better connectivity in low signal areas, and improves data transfer speeds and reduces dropped calls.
Finally, the device comes with BlackBerry 10 OS version 10.2, which includes hundreds of refinements plus many new features that help the user get more productive.
The BlackBerry Z30 comes with a 5-inch Super AMOLED display, 1280 x 720 resolution at 295ppi.

Customers swarmed the three Telcos – SingTel, StarHub and M1 – as the Samsung GALAXY Note 3 became available in Singapore. The phablet was also available at Samsung Experience Stores in Singapore.

Aesel James, 27, was the first customer who got the Samsung GALAXY Note 3 at the SingTel roadshow at Marina Bay Sands.
The Samsung GALAXY Note 3 and GALAXY Gear was first unveiled at Times Square in New York on 4 September. Here’s the livecast of the global event.

“I have a Mac and an iPad, and I was seriously considering between the iPhone 5S and the Note 3. I thought it was easier to be in the same eco system with the 5S, but the Note 3 won me over with the new S Pen and its big screen, which is perfect for me when watching videos and playing games,” said Aesel James.

During the Formula 1 SingTel Singapore Grand Prix over the weekend, I popped down to Caterham’s garage to get up close with how Dell provides the complex IT systems needed to power Caterham’s data processing needs.

Dell and Intel are global sponsors and technology partners of the Caterham F1 Team.
To provide the computing resource needed at the circuit, Caterham uses Dell’s “Active System” – a converged “Half-rack” housing all servers, storage and connectivity.
Impressions:
A race weekend generates some 60GB of data, all of which goes through the “half-rack”.
The half-rack weighs about 800kg which is a drastic reduction from the 2 tonnes that a traditional trackside computing set-up accounts for.
With the impending roll-out of Dell VRTX, the set-up will be even more compact and weigh only about 100kg.
This is important given the limited space available in the garage and costs of shipping equipment ($250 USD/kg) between circuit venues.
All the computers are non-ruggedised, commercially available off the shelf systems – keeping cost, bulk and weight down, while making replaceability easier.
These include 30 virtual machines on Dell PowerEdge R620 & R720, 10 Dell Force10 PowerConnect switches, 25TB of trackside storage using EqualLogic and server platforms utilising SSDs.
In addition, there are some 100 Dell Latitude laptops, including Dell XPS and Latitude 10 tablets; as well as 20 high-powered Dell Precision mobile workstations.
What if the half-rack fails?
Dell has also implemented a disaster recovery system (DRS) to continue running the F1 cars in such a contingency.
The DRS comprises a Dell PowerEdge R720xd server for “snap-shotting” virtual machines, a Dell PowerEdge R210, a SonicWall firewall, and an Artist node to run the intercom system.
With this set-up, Dell has made Caterham one of the leading F1 teams in terms of consolidated and virtualised trackside computing.
