Acronis’ presence in Singapore has created new opportunities for local businesses and resulted in a triple-digit percentage growth of Acronis Cloud Business.
The “A”-shaped table in the conference room of Acronis’ global HQ office in Singapore at Suntec Tower 3.
Acronis, a global leader in hybrid cloud data protection celebrated the second anniversary of its Headquarters in Singapore, marking the two most successful years in the company’s history.
“The digital world is all around us. Just like the world’s-first Smart Nation program in Singapore, Scuderia Toro Rosso fully depends on data. Our success on the track depends on data availability, making data protection a critical element in our business. We are proud to celebrate the two years since the re-opening of Acronis International Headquarters in Singapore, because much of Acronis’ cutting-edge technology is developed right here in their R&D center in Singapore,” said Scuderia Toro Rosso Team Principal Franz Tost.
In July this year Acronis became the first Singaporean IT company to sponsor a Formula 1 team – the Scuderia Toro Rosso Team.
Two years ago the members of the Scuderia Toro Rosso attended the opening ceremony as guests.
Today Scuderia Toro Rosso shared the celebrations as a long-term partner and consumer of Acronis technology.
Acronis was founded in Singapore in 2003.
Since reopening the International Headquarters in Singapore two years ago, Acronis has invested heavily in building local capability through creating jobs, importing world-class talent to the Singapore-based R&D center, and forming lasting partnerships with local universities and the nation’s development agencies.
In February this year Acronis announced the start of a joint collaboration with A*STAR’s Data Storage Institute, aimed at pushing the limits of data protection technology and cloud-based storage.

Founded in September 2003 in Singapore by CEO Serguei Beloussov, Acronis is the first Singapore principle company to sponsor a team in the world’s premier racing series.

“In our competitive environment it is becoming increasingly more important to protect all our technical information with a very high standard of software and Acronis can offer exactly what we need. Now that we have a long-term project together, we can’t wait to start working with Acronis, not only on a sponsorship level, but also in terms of adopting their data protection products within our factory and race team. I am sure we will both benefit from this technical cooperation and it will help our team to continue moving forward,” commented Team Principal Franz Tost.
Following the successful partnership between F1 team Scuderia Toro Rosso and Acronis during the Hungarian GP, the two parties have extended their agreement into a new long-term partnership, aimed at reaching new heights in racing and technological product development.
Acronis first announced its intentions to sponsor Toro Rosso back in May this year.

“Acronis is a cutting edge and forward looking company, growing rapidly in the field of data protection, which links in very well with the sport. This cooperation will see them and us work well and progress together,” said Scuderia Toro Rosso driver, Daniil Kvyat.
Acronis, a global leader in hybrid cloud data protection, hopes that the new partnership will lead to rapid innovation, increased safety and enhanced performance during races and off the track.

During the Formula 1 SingTel Singapore Grand Prix over the weekend, I popped down to Caterham’s garage to get up close with how Dell provides the complex IT systems needed to power Caterham’s data processing needs.

Dell and Intel are global sponsors and technology partners of the Caterham F1 Team.
To provide the computing resource needed at the circuit, Caterham uses Dell’s “Active System” – a converged “Half-rack” housing all servers, storage and connectivity.
Impressions:
A race weekend generates some 60GB of data, all of which goes through the “half-rack”.
The half-rack weighs about 800kg which is a drastic reduction from the 2 tonnes that a traditional trackside computing set-up accounts for.
With the impending roll-out of Dell VRTX, the set-up will be even more compact and weigh only about 100kg.
This is important given the limited space available in the garage and costs of shipping equipment ($250 USD/kg) between circuit venues.
All the computers are non-ruggedised, commercially available off the shelf systems – keeping cost, bulk and weight down, while making replaceability easier.
These include 30 virtual machines on Dell PowerEdge R620 & R720, 10 Dell Force10 PowerConnect switches, 25TB of trackside storage using EqualLogic and server platforms utilising SSDs.
In addition, there are some 100 Dell Latitude laptops, including Dell XPS and Latitude 10 tablets; as well as 20 high-powered Dell Precision mobile workstations.
What if the half-rack fails?
Dell has also implemented a disaster recovery system (DRS) to continue running the F1 cars in such a contingency.
The DRS comprises a Dell PowerEdge R720xd server for “snap-shotting” virtual machines, a Dell PowerEdge R210, a SonicWall firewall, and an Artist node to run the intercom system.
With this set-up, Dell has made Caterham one of the leading F1 teams in terms of consolidated and virtualised trackside computing.

The Formula 1 Grand Prix is again in Singapore for the only night race in the F1 circuit.
I had the opportunity to take a peek at how SAP’s HANA in-memory computing system helps McLaren to harness the Big Data streaming in from their cars’ onboard sensors to fine-tune – in real time – the team’s race strategy.

SAP HANA provides McLaren with a dashboard for comprehensive awareness and real time decision making during a Formula 1 race or practice.
In this digital age of high performance computing, pertinent telemetry data is constantly being captured and transmitted by on-board sensors on the car for modelling and analysis by the team management back in the control room – be it during test practices, qualification runs, or the actual race itself.
