The vision of Intel Education’s initiatives is: Empowering Tomorrow’s Innovators. Here’s a peek into how Intel is plugging into the education scene.

To most people, including myself, Intel is the leading chip maker that manufactures the processors in the computers that we use.

The company is also heavily involved in helping educational organisations and government bodies harness technology to reinvent teaching and learning for the younger generation.

I had the pleasure of listening to key executives in Intel Education over lunch earlier this week during the Bett Asia Leadership Summit in Singapore at the Marina Bay Sands.

John Galvin – a vice president of the Sales and Marketing Group and general manager of Intel Education at Intel Corporation – hosted the lunch and shared his experience in setting global strategy and implementation of innovative technology solutions to advance education worldwide.

The Intel Future Showcase puts Asian innovation in the spotlight and offers visitors a behind-the-scenes look at Asia’s role in driving the company’s innovation and technology development.

The Intel Education 2 in 1 Reference Design, offering the flexibility and mobility of a tablet plus the performance and productivity of a laptop - offering versatile learning for students. The ruggedised device is drop, water and dust resistant - suitable for outdoor learning as well as within the classroom. I first saw this design in Singapore during the Intel Solutions Summit back in April this year.

ASUS showcases 12 new products in Singapore for 2014

In its main product launch for 2014 in Singapore, ASUS launched a slew of 12 new business, consumer and gaming products – including the Transformer Book T300 Chi, ROG G751 and ZenWatch.

Many of the devices were first unveiled during IFA 2014 in early September, the highlight of which was the ZenWatch – the company’s first wearable device.

It will be available in Singapore for S$299 from end of 2014.

Another significant milestone is the unveiling of devices incorporating the latest Intel Core M processor, also unveiled during IFA 2014 – the Transformer Book T300 Chi is one of the earliest off the block to ship with the new chip.

The new Core M, which enables razor-thin, energy-efficient, fanless designs for 2-in-1 devices must have played a large part in making the Transformer Book T300 Chi the world’s slimmest 12.5-inch detachable 2-in-1 tablet.

I was wondering how well Intel has penetrated the mobile market. Here are some quick updates from Jonathan Ong, Area Sales Manager of Intel Singapore & Malaysia.

Intel & Mitsubishi Electric collaborate to create Factory Automation Systems

Intel and Mitsubishi Electric has announced a new collaboration to develop next-generation factory automation (FA) systems with Internet of Things (IoT) technologies and a pilot program at Intel’s backend manufacturing facility in Malaysia.

“The collaboration between Mitsubishi Electric and Intel on this IoT project has enabled field data from semiconductor manufacturing lines to be collected and analyzed to improve operational performance, yet also contribute energy savings for a more sustainable society,” said Masayuki Yamamoto, group senior vice president, Factory Automation Systems, Mitsubishi Electric Corporation.

“The collaboration between Mitsubishi Electric and Intel on this IoT project has enabled field data from semiconductor manufacturing lines to be collected and analyzed to improve operational performance, yet also contribute energy savings for a more sustainable society,” said Masayuki Yamamoto, group senior vice president, Factory Automation Systems, Mitsubishi Electric Corporation.

The pilot demonstrates the benefits of IoT in a factory setting with a focus on delivering productivity enhancement through innovative functions, such as predictive failure, by combining Intel’s expertise in developing solutions for IoT and Mitsubishi Electric’s “e-F@ctory” automation capabilities.

Intel realized a savings of US$9 million over the course of the pilot.

“We believe that other manufacturers can benefit from this joint Intel-Mitsubishi Electric solution, which combines big data analysis, optimized data capture and processing to deliver improved performance and optimized maintenance,” said Yamamoto san.

Intel launches the Intel Core M Processor at IFA 2014

The new Core M enables razor-thin, energy-efficient, fanless designs and will be available in the holiday season of 2014.

The new Intel Core M processor will power a slew of new 2-in-1 devices from manufacturers including Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, Lenovo and Toshiba.

Offering a combination of mobility and performance, Intel’s new processor aims to provide performance in thin, fanless mobile devices.

Intel boasts that the Core M processor can power razor-thin devices with Intel Core level performance and deliver up to double the battery life when compared to a four-year old system.

Additional Intel Core M platform features include support for high-quality audio, Intel Wireless Display 5.0, Intel’s second generation 802.11ac products and will evolve to support wireless docking with WiGig from Intel.

Intel’s “Thin Canyon” NUC

Intel today launched the newest offering in its Next Unit of Computing (NUC) product line – the first to be powered by an Intel Atom E3815 processor (based on the company’s “Bay Trail” architecture).

The new NUC, model DE3815TYKH, is designed with thin client applications in mind.

It features a fan-less design, on board eMMC memory, and the space savings of a 4”x4” motherboard.

With the ability to directly power a LCD monitor through an onboard eDP connector, the new NUC is a great solution for kiosks, point-of-sale and digital signage.

It also is expected to be relevant to the space-constraints of modern Asia’s urban homes.

The new product is available in distribution starting today.
