During the Formula 1 SingTel Singapore Grand Prix over the weekend, I popped down to Caterham’s garage to get up close with how Dell provides the complex IT systems needed to power Caterham’s data processing needs.
Dell and Intel are global sponsors and technology partners of the Caterham F1 Team.
To provide the computing resource needed at the circuit, Caterham uses Dell’s “Active System” – a converged “Half-rack” housing all servers, storage and connectivity.
Impressions:
A race weekend generates some 60GB of data, all of which goes through the “half-rack”.
The half-rack weighs about 800kg which is a drastic reduction from the 2 tonnes that a traditional trackside computing set-up accounts for.
With the impending roll-out of Dell VRTX, the set-up will be even more compact and weigh only about 100kg.
This is important given the limited space available in the garage and costs of shipping equipment ($250 USD/kg) between circuit venues.
All the computers are non-ruggedised, commercially available off the shelf systems – keeping cost, bulk and weight down, while making replaceability easier.
These include 30 virtual machines on Dell PowerEdge R620 & R720, 10 Dell Force10 PowerConnect switches, 25TB of trackside storage using EqualLogic and server platforms utilising SSDs.
In addition, there are some 100 Dell Latitude laptops, including Dell XPS and Latitude 10 tablets; as well as 20 high-powered Dell Precision mobile workstations.
What if the half-rack fails?
Dell has also implemented a disaster recovery system (DRS) to continue running the F1 cars in such a contingency.
The DRS comprises a Dell PowerEdge R720xd server for “snap-shotting” virtual machines, a Dell PowerEdge R210, a SonicWall firewall, and an Artist node to run the intercom system.
With this set-up, Dell has made Caterham one of the leading F1 teams in terms of consolidated and virtualised trackside computing.

Offering a new model for Ultrabook users, McAfee launches the industry’s first unlimited cross-device security service with facial and voice recognition for consumer devices.

Pricing and Availability
Beginning in June 2013, McAfee LiveSafe service will be available through select retailers for S$59 for a 12-month subscription when purchased with a new PC or tablet, and S$99.95 for a 12-month subscription for consumers’ existing PCs and tablets.
Minimum subscription period is 12 months or multiples of 12 months.
McAfee LiveSafe will come pre-installed on Ultrabook devices and PCs from Dell in Singapore starting on 9 June, 2013.
A recent global survey conducted by McAfee revealed that more than 40 per cent of households own five or more Internet-enabled devices, which contributes significantly to a user’s risk of exposure to online threats.
McAfee LiveSafe service offers a comprehensive approach to security, while providing consumers with a simple Web-based dashboard to centrally manage security on all of their PCs, Macs, smartphones and tablets.
To increase the level of consumer security, McAfee LiveSafe service also includes a cloud-based “safety deposit box”, called “McAfee Personal Locker”.

The McAfee Personal Locker uses facial and voice recognition to authenticate a user’s identity so that they can securely store sensitive, personal information such as financial records, drivers licenses and passports.
It also allows users to easily and securely manage their passwords and automatically log into all their online accounts from any of their devices.
The survey also revealed that globally more than 50 per cent of consumers spend at least 15 hours a week, or two hours a day, using their devices for personal reasons.

Offering powerful workstation performance at near desktop PC prices, the new Dell Precision T1700 Small-Form Factor (SFF) and Mini-Tower (MT) are the smallest workstations in their class.
“Dell Precision workstations are packed with the power and graphics capabilities necessary for our students to produce their best work,” said Dr. Elisa Stephens, president of the Academy of Art University.
On the other end, the Dell Precision R7610 rack workstation delivers new virtualisation capabilities, increased performance and enhanced remote accessibility.

Here’s a selection of interesting tech events happening this week (14-20 October 2012). It is not an exhaustive list and represents only a sampling of events that gives a taste of the tech pulse in Singapore.

This week sees the continuation of buzz building up to the General Availability of Windows 8. Intel, Samsung, HP and Sony have already showcased their respective offerings. Next week, Microsoft will be releasing Windows 8 on 26 October 2012.

What has Jay Chou, Asus, Intel and Bang & Olufsen have in common? The answer is a new limited edition N-series notebook computer from ASUS.
Jay Chou, renowned artist and songwriter, was appointed by ASUS as the Chief Designer of the N3, which features 2nd generation Intel Core processors and Sandy Bridge architecture that enhance both graphics and multitasking performance.
The notebook also comes with the SonicMaster audio technology which was co-developed last year by a dedicated ASUS team and leading sound experts from Bang & Olufsen ICEpower.

The notebook was launched in a media conference in Taipei by Jay Chou and ASUS Chairman Jonney Shih. Hoping to blend technology with art, Shih believes that “this strong partnership <with Jay Chou> will continue to bring more exciting products to our customers”.
The notebook is estimated to be available in Singapore by the first half of July 2011 and will retail for S$1298 (GST included).
Unique design inspired by traditional and modern motifs

Jay Chou transformed his passion and devotion for music into innovative notebook design by using music notes, sheet music, piano concepts and other musical icons as inspiration for a truly unique notebook. The combination of modern “J-style” text-wrapping with a classical Chinese blue and white porcelain finish infuses the notebook with strong and diverse Asian aesthetics.
