M1 CEO Karen Kooi to Retire – Manjot Singh Mann Succeeds

M1 Limited (M1) announced today that Ms Karen Kooi Lee Wah 64, will retire as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) on 6 December 2018, after 23 years with the Group, to pave the way for leadership renewal.

“It has been my privilege and honour to witness and build on M1’s growth since its early beginnings, together with a capable and dedicated management team. I would not have accomplished as much without the team. After having spent 23 years with the Company, it is time for me to hand over the mantle. M1 is well-positioned for the next phase of growth and I am committed to working closely with the Board and Manjot to ensure a smooth transition,” said retiring incumbent M1 CEO, Karen Kooi.

She will be succeeded by telco veteran Manjot Singh Mann who will join as its new CEO on the same date.

We wish Karen well in her retirement,” said Danny Teoh, Chairman of M1.

Pending developments related to Konnectivity’s pre-conditional offer for M1 shares, Karen Kooi will remain on the Board as a Director of M1 Limited.

She will also remain as advisor to the Board till 28 February 2019 to ensure a smooth transition.

Manjot Singh Mann brings with him over 28 years of well-rounded operational leadership experience across diverse geographical markets and a unique blend of insights and perspectives in the rapidly evolving telecommunications industry.

M1 & Nokia ups cellular & Wi-Fi networks in SMRT stations

M1 boosts network capacity, indoor coverage with Nokia in Singapore’s busiest MRT stations.

The new Flexi Zone small cells network in Orchard MRT, Raffles Place MRT and Jurong East MRT has increased 4G LTE download speeds by up to 2 times, compared to the performance over the existing base station and antenna system.

M1 Limited (M1) and Nokia have completed the installation of indoor small cells and WiFi networks to meet the surging data demand of mobile device users at Orchard MRT station, Raffles MRT Station, as well as Jurong East MRT station.

With the high adoption of advanced smart devices in Singapore, the demand for sharing and viewing high-resolution photos and high-definition videos have been growing.

To further improve customer experience in accessing data, M1 is working to provide high quality mobile coverage in MRT stations to thousands of passengers, particularly at the crowded zones during peak hours.

EZ-Link launches NFC transit SIM cards for contactless payments

All three local telcos will sell the new NFC transit SIM cards. Supported handsets can be used to pay for MRT, LRT and bus rides; as well as at retail transactions.

The NFC transit SIM is a next generation, full-service NFC (near field communication) SIM which can be used for public transport, as well as at more than 30,000 ez-link acceptance points islandwide including shopping, retail, food & beverage and taxis payments.

“Transit is the ‘killer phone app’ Singapore consumers have been looking forward to, and we are pleased to be the first to offer customers the convenience of making payment with the one device that is always with them, their phone,” said P. Subramaniam, Chief Marketing Officer, M1.

Jointly developed by the Land Transport Authority (LTA), the Infocomm Development Authority (IDA) and EZ-Link, the NFC transit SIM will enable commuters to pay for public transit rides using just their NFC mobile phones.

M1 customers will be the first to enjoy contactless transit payments with their NFC transit SIM cards available at M1 Shops from today.

The NFC transit SIM card will cost S$37.45 (including GST).

As a launch promotion, the service activation fee of S$9.10 (including GST) will also be waived for customers signing up from tomorrow until 30 April 2016, while NFC transit SIM card stocks last.

Following Singtel’s announcement of its DataX2 offer yesterday, M1 also offers Upsized Data for its postpaid customers at S$5.90; as well as two new SIM-only plans, and increased data for the existing SIM-only plans. StarHub is expected to follow suit with their data-upsize offer.

Here’s a summary of M1’s promotions:

  • Data bundles enhanced for current SIM-only plans of up to 20GB.
  • S$5.90 Upsized Data gives smartphone plan users up to 12GB extra.

M1, which introduced its SIM-only plans last July, is adding two new SIM-only plans – the mySIM+ 15 and mySIM+ 20.

The S$20 per month mySIM+ 20 comes with a data bundle of 4GB, 150 minutes of calls and 800 SMS/MMS.

For S$15, the mySIM+ 15 offers 1GB data, 100 minutes of calls and 600 SMS/MMS.

Apple announces new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus with iOS 8

One year to the day from the launch of the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c, Apple has unveiled the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 and 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus, running iOS 8.

Prices range from S$998 to S$1,448.

The 4.7” iPhone 6 with 1334 x 750 pixels alongside the larger 5.5” iPhone 6 Plus with 1920 x 1080 pixels.
