The new Acronis Backup 12 is available as a yearly subscription (see rates here) or as a perpetual license at US$89 (S$121).

The new Acronis Backup 12 expands data protection to the Cloud, across physical and virtual systems, and onto mobile devices; with support for 15 platforms, including Microsoft, Amazon, Android, Apple, Linux, and VMWare vSphere.
Acronis, a provider of hybrid cloud data protection, has announced Acronis Backup 12, the company’s new solution that protects businesses’ full digital image.
“Data is the lifeline of today’s digital businesses – without it your company will not survive. With Acronis Backup 12, businesses get the complete protection required in this new digital world with the ability to control their data no matter where it resides combined with the power to get it back faster than ever before in the event of a loss or an outside attack,” said Serguei Beloussov, co-founder and CEO at Acronis.
With most business assets now being digital and not confined to a single device or location, businesses need a backup solution that is designed to provide complete data protection to support this new way of operating.
Acronis claims that the Backup 12 is unlike any other solution with its ability to backup and protect company data in today’s hybrid cloud IT environments – whether it resides in the cloud, on-premises, across virtual and physical systems, in remote systems, and on mobile devices.
Acronis Backup 12 is available in Singapore by contacting a local Acronis partner.

As a follow up on the opinion piece that Tony Jarvis contributed yesterday on Endpoint Protection, I asked him to share his take on the Singapore Government’s move to cut Internet access from work computers used by civil servants from May next year.

Tony Jarvis is the Chief Strategist (Asia, Middle East and Africa) for Check Point Software Technologies.
Below are some of his personal views
Question: Is banning internet the right approach to securing government?
There is no right or wrong approach around banning the Internet.
At first glance, the decision to ban Internet access might seem extreme.
Background
The Singapore Government is cutting off Internet connections from work computers used officially by public servants from May 2017, in an effort to plug potential leaks from work emails and shared documents – amidst today’s advanced security threats.
Employees can still surf the Web on their personal smartphones and tablets since these devices are not connected to the government network.
Dedicated Internet terminals will be issued to those who need them in work.
However, it is important to note that this decision will have been made after careful review, taking into consideration a number of factors.
For example, removing access to the Internet will bring with it the benefit of reducing exposure to many threats.
Unfortunately, this comes at the expense of the productivity and effectiveness of the organisation and its employees.
These are policy decisions made by organisations, in this case, the government, and we are certain that they have considered multiple aspects.
This particular case highlights the ongoing challenge organisations have remaining secure in a connected world.

The Singapore Government is cutting off Internet connections from work computers used officially by public servants from May 2017, in an effort to plug potential leaks from work emails and shared documents – amidst today’s advanced security threats.
I invited Tony Jarvis from Check Point Software Technologies to share his opinion on how best to secure an organisation’s network and IT assets. This guest blog is written by him.

Tony Jarvis is the Chief Strategist (Asia, Middle East and Africa) for Check Point Software Technologies.
With every detection of a new threat, the security landscape evolves and attackers are no longer just looking at inventive ways to infiltrate a network but also innovative evasion techniques and the damage it will inflict.
“To say the security landscape is constantly changing would be an understatement,” says Tony Jarvis, Chief Strategist (Asia, Middle East and Africa) for Check Point Software Technologies.
What really matters is how vendors respond to the ever-evolving landscape and not just make incremental enhancements to existing solutions that still predominantly focus on detection, rather than prevention.
With the numerous acquisitions and layoffs being announced, the real question that CIOs and CISOs need to ask is: “Is my security vendor in for the long run?”
Central to any effective security strategy is the ability to stop threats before the initial compromise.
The only way to do this is with prevention.
Many vendors simply can’t do it, which is why they talk about detection.
I also asked Tony specifically for his take on the Singapore Government’s move to cut Internet access from work computers used by civil servants from May next year.
Here are more of his opinions in a Q&A format.
The majority of solutions being deployed today rely on a detection capability, with some requiring users to choose whether infected files should be quarantined or allowed to pass through.
Not only is this intrusive to the user experience, it’s also prone to human error.
Inflexible deployment models calling for an all or nothing use of cloud or private malware analysis fail to meet many customers’ requirements.
To make matters worse, the sandboxing process often takes too long, giving malware plenty of time to get to work before its presence becomes known.

The Singtel Cyber Security Institute (CSI) aims to hone cyber skills and preparedness of businesses and governments in Asia Pacific by providing holistic training for company boards, management, technology and operations personnel to deal with cyber attacks.
Update (18 May, 2016):
Competing telco StarHub announced plans to grow the local cyber security ecosystem with the launch of its Cyber Security Centre of Excellence (COE).

Chua Sock Koong, Group CEO, Singtel Group, giving her opening remarks at the launch of the Singtel Cyber Security Institute.
The CSI is a hybrid between an advanced cyber range and an educational institute.
“Based on our engagements with companies in Singapore, more than 85% do not have robust cyber response plans nor the opportunity to conduct realistic drills to test and sharpen such plans. This lack of cyber preparedness is worsened by the severe global shortfall of trained cyber security experts, which Forbes puts at some 1 million in 2016. This is why we’ve stepped up to the plate. We know we have to help companies secure themselves against a potential slew of increasingly sophisticated cyber attacks,” said Bill Chang, Chief Executive Officer, Group Enterprise at Singtel.
Singtel boasts that the CSI is the first-of–its-kind in the region to test and train companies in dealing with sophisticated cyber threats.
Housed in a permanent space of over 10,000 sq ft, the institute provides cyber skills development and education programmes tailored to the varying needs of company boards, C-suite management, technology and operational staff.
Boards and C-suite level participants will be trained in the areas of cyber threat awareness, risk management, business continuity planning and crisis communications preparation.
The cyber operations team will be trained in defence and response capabilities to sharpen their skills.
In conjunction with the launch of the CSI, Singtel announced that it is the first company in Singapore to work with the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore on the Cyber Security Associates and Technologists (CSAT) Programme to train infocomm professionals in cyber security.

Dr Yaacob Ibrahim, Minister for Communications and Information, delivering his speech to open the new Singtel Cyber Security Institute.
Under this programme, Singtel will train fresh infocomm technology professionals and equip them with basic cyber security skills.

The suvey found that one in three people have suffered data loss and 11% are willing to pay $500 or more to recover their lost files.

With the growing number of PCs and mobile devices per household, new survey highlights people value data more than hardware.
The global study sponsored by Acronis, a global leader in hybrid cloud data protection, reveals a growing understanding about the value of, and attitudes toward, the protection of personal data on computers, mobile phones and tablet devices.
Nearly half of survey respondents have more than four devices in a household to protect and 45 percent of survey respondents fear losing photos and videos the most. Security and privacy were cited as key requirements for backing up data.
Emerging concerns for personal data protection
The traditional fears of hardware failure and accidental deletion are no longer the sole reasons people fear data loss.
