POTD: How a dog waits

Saturday, September 14th, 2013

I was just trying out the Nikon D7100 for the first time when Cliff dashed out the open garden door thinking it was time for his before-bedtime walk. So I snapped a few shots of him as the test subject.

That’s Cliff just outside the garden door, waiting for his walk. It was already pretty dim since the garden lights weren’t switched on. Both photos taken with a Nikon D7100 with AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/4G ED VR lens. Photo credit: John Tan.

At first, he was all eager and sitting upright.

After a while, when he realised that the walk was not going to be due for another 10 minutes, he resigned himself to a more relaxing posture.

POTD: Sports Hub and sportsman – work in progress

Friday, September 13th, 2013

Snapped this photo of the Sports Hub and a lone runner just before the skies opened up and inundated the pitch.

Work-in-progress for the Sports Hub. But more poignantly, it’s also work-in-progress for the runner. In fact, any sports pursuit is in a state of work-in-progress all the time - at any point in time, the sportsman/sportswoman is constantly striving to improve and better the previous achievement, instead of resting on his/her laurels. SAP HANA powers McLaren’s F1 real time race strategy

Thursday, September 12th, 2013

The Formula 1 Grand Prix is again in Singapore for the only night race in the F1 circuit.

I had the opportunity to take a peek at how SAP’s HANA in-memory computing system helps McLaren to harness the Big Data streaming in from their cars’ onboard sensors to fine-tune – in real time – the team’s race strategy.

SAP HANA provides McLaren with a dashboard for comprehensive awareness and decision making.

In this digital age of high performance computing, pertinent telemetry data is constantly being captured and transmitted by on-board sensors on the car for modelling and analysis by the team management back in the control room – be it during test practices, qualification runs, or the actual race itself.

Both the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c sport a 4-inch Retina display.

With all the “leakages” that preceded the announcement, there were hardly any surprises – except for the pricing, which seemed on the high side of market expectations.

32GB S$1,148 S$988
