I was just trying out the Nikon D7100 for the first time when Cliff dashed out the open garden door thinking it was time for his before-bedtime walk. So I snapped a few shots of him as the test subject.

That’s Cliff just outside the garden door, waiting for his walk. It was already pretty dim since the garden lights weren’t switched on. Both photos taken with a Nikon D7100 with AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/4G ED VR lens. Photo credit: John Tan.
At first, he was all eager and sitting upright.
After a while, when he realised that the walk was not going to be due for another 10 minutes, he resigned himself to a more relaxing posture.

That’s his lazy-dog pose, resting his jaw on the doorstep. Usually he does that lying on the living room floor and resting his jaw on the gate grill, while watching the world go by. First two shots, and I’m already impressed by the sharpness of the lens and low-light capability of this camera.
The first photo was taken at the maximum ISO setting of Hi 2 (equivalent to ISO 25600) without flash and converted to black-and-white in Adobe Camera Raw, while the second photo was taken at ISO 800 but with on-board flash.
I love how the individual hairs where the face was in focus were so sharp and detailed.
