Singapore telcos sell Apple iPhone 5s & iPhone 5c on 20 September

Singapore will be one of first 9 countries around the world getting the new iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c from Apple – from 20 September.

Apple announced the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c on 10 September.

All three telcos – M1, SingTel and StarHub will begin selling the new smartphones next Friday – all three are already accepting online pre-registration of interest on their websites.

Apple announces new iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c and iOS7

One year to the day from the launch of the iPhone 5, Apple has announced the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c, as well as the iOS7. 

The new iPhones will arrive on next Friday, 20 September in 9 countries, including Singapore, Hong Kong and China.

Both the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c sport a 4-inch Retina display.

With all the “leakages” that preceded the announcement, there were hardly any surprises – except for the pricing, which seemed on the high side of market expectations.

Both the two new iPhone models will be available from the Apple Online Store, and through SingTel, M1, StarHub and select Apple Authorised Resellers.

iPhone 5s cases will be available in beige, black, blue, brown, yellow and red while the iPhone 5c cases will be available in blue, green, pink, yellow, black and white.

A new iPhone 4S 8GB model will also be available for S$588 inc GST.

Where is the iPhone 5c targeted

Many has associated the “c” in the iPhone 5c to stand for “cheap” and targeted for the lower-priced market segment – since it is priced slightly less than the iPhone 5s.

2013 Formula 1 SingTel Singapore Grand Prix in the 6th year

In line with the current climate of going “local”, this year’s Formula 1 motorsport event in Singapore (20-22 September) will be infused with a distinctive local flavour as SingTel, Title Sponsor of the Singapore Grand Prix tries to bring the F1 race experience closer to Singaporeans with Formula 1 Singapore Style.

“The theme, Formula 1 Singapore Style, aims to create an F1 experience where everyone can be involved – both on and off the race tracks. They’ll even have a chance to take the driver’s seat in a race to the chequered flag,” said Mr Allen Lew, Country Chief Officer Singapore, SingTel (center). He is flanked on both sides by local celebrities Qi Yuwu and Joanne Peh.

As per previous years, a series of promotional activities has been planned leading up to the actual race.

The Big Race

The Big Race is an island-wide search for Singapore’s fastest race driver.

Local celebrities and self-proclaimed Formula 1 fans, Joanne Peh, Qi Yuwu, Pei Fen and Romeo Tan kicked off The Big Race today by clocking their fastest lap times in the Official F1 racing simulator game.

There will be a series of four roadshows where the public is invited to clock their fastest lap times in the game.

SingTel mio TV launches mio TV GO app

The new mio TV GO is mio TV’s companion app. It is free and is now available for download (for both Apple and Android devices).

mio TV GO includes features such as the ‘LIVE” streaming of selected mio TV channels, locally-produced shows to enhance the BPL-viewing experience, remote control function, and remote recording feature.

The app will allow BPL subscribers on the mio TV platform to enjoy ‘LIVE’ streaming of three mio Stadium channels (Channel 102 -104), three mio Sports channels (Channel 111 – 113) and four Asian channels.

With mio Stadium, customers can catch ‘LIVE’ Barclays Premier League (BPL) matches on their mobile phones and tablets and enjoy a groundbreaking locally-produced studio show.

Catch ‘LIVE’ matches of UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League, Italian Serie A, Spanish La Liga and other football matches available on mio Sports.

Fans of Asian content can also watch Jia Le Channel, ETTV Asia, ETTV Yoyo and Jiangsu Satellite Channel on mio TV GO.

Content subscription fee of $5 per month will be waived till May 2014.

SingTel mio TV unveils BPL stand-alone subscription @ $59.90

SingTel says the majority of BPL customers unaffected. The existing mio TV Gold Packs are still available from SGD$64.90.

Gordon Ramsay VS Singapore Chilli Crab, Laksa & Chicken Rice

After eight days of intensive voting and over 2.5 million votes, Singapore has chosen Ang Kiam Meng from Jumbo Seafood (319,922 votes), Mdm Foo Kui Lian from Tian Tian Chicken Rice (318,151 votes), and Mr Ryan Koh from 328 Katong Laksa (316,611 votes) as their most popular hawkers to challenge Gordon Ramsay at the SingTel Hawker Heroes Challenge.

Update (7 July, 2013):

More than 1,000 members of the public were at Newton Food Centre to taste and vote for their preferred version of the three dishes.

Overall, the Singapore hawker heroes edged-out Chef Ramsay in the live poll by 6% of the total vote.

In terms of individual dishes, Ramsay’s version of the Chilli Crab beat that of Jumbo Seafood by 5%; while he lost to both Tian Tian Chicken Rice (by 6%) and 328 Katong Laksa (19%) for the other other two dishes.

The three will now prepare for a mouth-watering culinary cook-off against Michelin-starred heavyweight Gordon Ramsay in the SingTel Hawker Heroes cook-off.

On 5 and 6 July, Chef Ramsay will spend time with each of the three hawkers to learn their signature dishes: chicken rice, chilli crab and laksa.

He will then put his own unique spin on these dishes at the final showdown event held at Newton Food Centre on Sunday, 7 July.

SingTel launches commercial 150Mbps 4G service with “Mobile Broadband 150.

Singapore Telecommunications today announced the launch of Mobile Broadband 150.

“Our customers can look forward to a 150Mbps service for smartphones and tablets in the coming months when handsets compatible with these speeds become available in Singapore,” said Johan Buse, SingTel’s Vice President of Consumer Marketing.

It is the first 4G mobile broadband service in Singapore to offer speeds of up to 150Mbps, which is two times faster than conventional 4G services.

Customers can enjoy these speeds at outdoor locations nationwide, as well as popular indoor locations such as Jurong Point, Raffles City, Tampines Mall, Bishan Junction 8, Bugis Junction and Changi Airport.

New iPad App: iTrust by Borneo Motors and SingTel

Borneo Motors has launched a locally-developed iPad application – iTrust – in partnership with SingTel. The app helps staff provide Toyota customers a more personalised vehicle servicing experience with enhanced interactivity.

Customers will be able to view videos of comparative testing, such as the video of a Toyota Genuine Brake Pads alongside that of a counterfeit part.

The new app embodies 40 years of expertise and experience from Borneo Motors.

Here’s a selection of interesting tech events happening this week (4-10 November 2012). It is not an exhaustive list and represents only a sampling of events that gives a taste of the tech pulse in Singapore.
