Tech focus: Key trends in POS systems for 2015 – Bikash Kumar

Friday, January 2nd, 2015

Shopping is a favourite past time in Singapore and at the heart of the vendor’s efficiency and the consumer’s experience is the Point Of Sale (POS) being used.

As we step into 2015, Bikash Kumar shares his thoughts on some of the key trends shaping the evolution of POS technology in 2015.

Mobile POS enables greater consumer interaction with the sales staff.

The Point of Sale (POS) system is where consumers pay for their purchases in a retail store.

Traditionally, the POS systems have been used to generate information on transactions within a retail outlet.

However, the POS technology has been improving significantly, allowing retail staff to deliver multiple operations, besides just scanning merchandise and generating bills.

According to Integrated Retail, a firm that specialises in designing, deploying and maintaining POS systems across the region, the POS systems are likely to see further enhancements in 2015.

Here are five key changes that we are likely to see.

  1. Morphing from Point of Sale to a Point of Service
  2. POS is increasingly mobile and it is lighter
  3. POS systems are becoming inter-connected
  4. POS system activities are traceable in real time
  5. POS is driving up productivity

Below are my thoughts on each of these key changes.

Saturday, January 4th, 2014

Two very different online shopping experience to check out over the weekend. Omigo offers to be Singapore’s one-stop online shopping destination; while SampleStore.com is an innovative try-vertising platform in Singapore.

Omigo and SampleStore.com are two online shopping websites that belong to SingPost.

Omigo and SampleStore.com are two online shopping websites that belong to SingPost.

Both websites are part of the Singapore Post group of companies with the former powered by vPost.

I first came across them during a briefing by SingPost a few weeks ago. I suppose it is part of the company’s effort to diversify its business beyond traditional mail and package delivery.

Omigo - online offers free delivery for purchases above S$99, and 14 days free return policy.

Omigo – online offers free delivery for purchases above S$99, and 14 days free return policy.

Omigo offers a broad range of products in the following categories: cameras, mobiles & tablets, computers, games, audio & video, and baby & toys.

So the product line at the moment seem to be heavy on the IT and electronics side.

The site offers free delivery for purchases above S$99, and 14 days free return policy. To start you off, you can sign up for their newsletter and get a free S$15 voucher.

SampleStore.com allows members to try out samples for free.

SampleStore.com allows members to try out samples for free.

SampleStore.com is a more interesting concept, taking sample-trying into the digital age.

The website offers consumers the opportunity to “Try Before You Buy” a product.

You get to try out the samples you select for free, paying a flat rate of S$5.99 for handling and postage (certain samples even have these fees waived if they are sponsored).

To continue receiving samples for free, you have to write reviews on the website about the samples you have received and tried.

Sample product categories include: Baby, Body, Eye, Face, Feminine care, Food, Fragrance, Hair, Sports, Supplement, Toiletries and Others.

Travel: Family vacation in Bangkok, Thailand

Monday, November 18th, 2013

A temple with a panoramic view, safari of wild animals, shopping every step of the way, massages and perennially congested traffic.

End of year is a good time to visit Bangkok, when it’s not so hot and it doesn’t rain so much or at all.

Thailand used to be a frequent destination for our year-end break, being so near to Singapore, and the friendliness of its people.

Our whole family had a whale of a time, “interacting” with the wax figurines. Visitors are allowed to touch and pose with wax replicas of Justin Bieber, Ronaldo, Tiger Woods, Oprah Winfrey and other celebrities.

What we liked most was how doting they were to little children – wherever we went with our young children, you could see the face of the locals brighten up with a smile, some going out of their way to chat with them and pat them.
