SingTel rebrands to “Let’s make everyday better” for customers

Wednesday, January 21st, 2015

“SingTel” is now “Singtel”, in its first rebranding in 16 years to provide better, seamless and effortless customer experiences to both consumers and Enterprise IT.

Singtel's fleet of vans, newly brandished with the new logo and tagline, revving to go forth from the company's headquarters at Comcentre building.

Singtel’s fleet of vans, newly brandished with the new logo and tagline, revving to go forth from the company’s headquarters at Comcentre building.

With much fanfare at its Comcentre headquarters in Singapore, the biggest telco in Singapore launched a new brand identity today.

“Generations in Singapore have grown up with Singtel. Customers see us as a trusted, reliable brand that is at the forefront of technology. In this digital age, we recognise that customers also want things simpler, faster and delivered by people who truly care,” said Chua Sock Koong, Singtel Group CEO.

Singapore Telecommunications – now known as “Singtel” for short – hopes that this reflects a new phase in its transformation journey to grow beyond traditional telecommunications into multimedia and ICT services.

The target audience is more targeted at the domestic market for the moment and three initiatives are being implemented for the consumer market with initiatives for Enterprise IT and its corporate customers in the pipeline.

The three initiatives are:

  1. Appointment booking at Singtel shops.
  2. Preferred customer care call-back time.
  3. Home/Office appointments: tightened window of waiting time.

More details on these initiatives can be found at the end of this article in the extracts from Singtel’s press release.

As you can guess, my favourite animation clips are “A Nation in Sync” by the E-lemonators (from CHIJ St Nicholas Girls’ School, code C5) and “SAF Never Sleeps” by wasd (from Commonwealth Secondary School, code C10).

Do check out their clips and vote for them if you like their animation as well.

I’ve looked at all of the clips and spoke to some of the teams and feel these two teams are some of the most positive and enthusiastic kids I’ve come across in this latest installment of the N.E.mation! competition.

New arrivals: Samsung GALAXY A Series – A7, A5 & A3 smartphones

Tuesday, January 13th, 2015

Samsung has launched in Singapore its GALAXY A Series of Android smartphones. The mid-range smartphones include the 4.5-inch A3 (S$448), 5-inch A5 (S$598) and the 5.5-inch A7 (S$TBA).

The A3 and A5 will be available in Singapore on 16 January while the A7 will be available this quarter.

The new GALAXY A series comes in three sizes (from left) - the 5.5-inch A7 (S$TBA), 5-inch A5 (S$598) and the 4.5-inch A3 (S$448).

The A3 and A5 were launched in Korea on 31 October, 2014 while the A7 was launched on 12 January, 2015 in Korea.

First impressions

I like the thin metallic body of the A-series.

The GALAXY A3 4G will be available from January 16 in Pearl White and Midnight Black, and will retail at $448 without contract. The Platinum Silver, Champagne Gold, Soft Pink versions will be available in late January and February.

The beauty face feature is really interesting.

This offers three ways of enhancing your selfies – skin retouch, eyes enlargement and face-slimming.

There are sliders to let you control how much of the effect to apply, and you can preview the effect as you drag the slider to the left or right.

The skin retouch effect is nothing new and is basically the run-of-the-mill skin blurring functionality which produces instantly-recognisably fake blurred skin.

So it’s good that you can use a slider to limit how much of the effect to apply to avoid appearing too amateurish.

The GALAXY A7 4G will be available this quarter in Pearl White and Midnight Black.

The eyes enlargement effect is really interesting but you have to try-and-error, as the effect can be either flattering or downright weird.

I was most impressed with the face slimming feature. I can see how it’s going to be flattering for many to see their face slimmed slightly.

All three models come with SUPER AMOLED screen for a vivid and colourful display.

The A-series GALAXY smartphones are priced more affordably than Samsung’s two flagship smartphones – the Note and S series.

N.E.mation! 9: Production wrap up for wasd (#NE9C10)

Wednesday, December 10th, 2014

When we visited wasd in their final week of production, we discovered that they were very much ahead of schedule – and it looked like they’re going to finish with much time to spare! Erin reports.

On the second last day of the 3-week production, we visited Commonwealth Secondary School’s wasd at Nanyang Polytechnic.

There was a rather relaxed ambience in their cubicle, as they were close to completion and were simply doing rendering and touching up on the finer details.

All set for rendering.

All set for rendering.

They chose to do rendering in layers, instead of everything at one go.

Rendering in layers is to render different objects in the scene separately, in different layers, so that for each layer of objects, a different image is rendered.

The clock is ticking away for CHIJ St. Nicholas Girls’ School’s Elemonators as they finish up their animation, already three-quarters through.

All they had to do was to finish animating the last few scenes of their animated piece, and then render it.

When we dropped by, the team was focused on the rotoscoping segment of their animation journey.

The vision of Intel Education’s initiatives is: Empowering Tomorrow’s Innovators. Here’s a peek into how Intel is plugging into the education scene.

To most people, including myself, Intel is the leading chip maker that manufactures the processors in the computers that we use.

The company is also heavily involved in helping educational organisations and government bodies harness technology to reinvent teaching and learning for the younger generation.

I had the pleasure of listening to key executives in Intel Education over lunch earlier this week during the Bett Asia Leadership Summit in Singapore at the Marina Bay Sands.

John Galvin – a vice president of the Sales and Marketing Group and general manager of Intel Education at Intel Corporation – hosted the lunch and shared his experience in setting global strategy and implementation of innovative technology solutions to advance education worldwide.

Notes jotted down about ‘pegging’.

It’s not all work and no play though, as the team had lots of fun, socialising with the rest of the participants and teams in NEmation, especially the team (Millennium Dragons, also from St Nicholas Girls’ School) in the cubicle next to theirs.

A common pastime was taking group photos in their workspace, with the assistance of members from other teams.

It appears that NEmation has been a great platform for them to socialise with people from other schools and standards, and gain new friends!

The team is creating a digital 2D animation sequence using Toom Boom Studio, based on the premise of four people performing acts of kindness for people around them, and in doing so, inspiring others to be kind too.
