Britannica stops print edition and goes purely online

After 244 years, the Encyclopaedia Britannica is going out of print. But it is not going extinct. It had already gone online for more than 10 years, but from now on, it will be 100% digital.

In my mind, its greatest competitor is the 11-year-old Wikipedia, which is written and edited by a community of many thousand contributors around the world – with nearly four million articles in English, and increasingly quoted as sources in researches and reports.

Britannica’s differentiation from Wikipedia will be in its credibility, derived from its sources, and careful verificaiton and editing in its rigorous vetting process.

The 32-volume printed version (which weighs nearly 60 kilograms and costs US$1,395) will be discontinued when current inventory runs out. That’s 4,000 sets out of the 12,000 print run of the 2010 edition.

Britannica enjoyed the briskest sales in 1990, selling some 120,000 sets in the US. Now, the print version generates less than one percent of the company’s revenue.

The bulk of Britannica’s revenue comes from selling curriculum products in school (85 percent), while another 15 percent are from subscriptions to its website.

There are some 500 thousand subscriptions paying US$70 each year to enjoy full access to Britannica’s articles, videos and original documents.

Another general-interest encyclopedia that is still being printed in the US is the World Book, which sells a 22-volume yearly edition.

Singapore-headquartered Tata Communications is now designated a “Technology Supplier of Formula 1”, with category exclusive designations as “Official Connectivity Provider of Formula 1” and “Official Web Hosting and Content Delivery Network of Formula1.com”.

Tata Communications will deliver connectivity to all 20 Formula 1 race locations over its global network, the largest in the world.

“Formula 1 requires fast and secure connectivity, because even a split second of downtime can have huge repercussions for its business, brand and reputation,” says Vinod Kumar, Managing Director and CEO of Tata Communications.It will also provide hosting and content delivery services to Formula1.com, which is accessed by tens of millions of fans around the globe.

Formula One group businesses and race locations will now be connected to the Tata Global Network (TGN), supported by secure MPLS connectivity.

Formula One Management’s IT infrastructure and Formula1.com will be colocated and hosted in Tata Communications’ data centres.

Tata Communications’ capabilities in video and content delivery networks (CDN) will enable uninterrupted, high-quality connectivity to the multi-media portal on Formula1.com.

“Connectivity and content delivery are critical issues for Formula 1 and working with the best in the business is a priority for us,” says Bernie Ecclestone, CEO of Formula One group.The (TGN) has Trans-Atlantic and Trans-Pacific data transfer capacity of one terabit per second.

This capacity will ensure Tata Communications to fully support Formula1.com during race weekends, when the site gets on average four million unique visits per weekend, peaking at seven million over some events.

Tata Communications’ infrastructure will enable the sport’s official website to instantly scale up to cope with these significant and sometimes unpredictable traffic spikes.

Tata Communications is now the Official Connectivity Provider for Formula 1.Tata Communications will also provide Formula1.com with a new Managed Security Suite and will apply an additional layer of managed security monitoring to ensure an increased level of protection to Formula One Management’s IT infrastructure.

Looking ahead, Tata Communications and Formula One Management will also work in close collaboration on research and development around connectivity and the latest video technologies.

Twitter reaches 500 million users

Twitter now has more than 500 million users, according to twopcharts.com, although only 100 million are active accounts.

Started in 2006, Twitter had hit 300 million users back in May 2011.

Commenting on the situation, Mr. Carl Leonard, Senior Manager, Websense Security Labs said: “… what’s in a number? Twitter is free to use, easier to abuse and is constantly targeted by malware authors and spammers. It’s nothing new; not all Twitter users are who they claim to be. Let’s see this more than just a numbers game and focus on keeping users safe in real-time so they are not just another statistic.”Twitter estimated that only ten percent of its active users have sent more than 100 tweets, while only 20 percent of users have sent more than ten tweets.

Facebook hit 500 million ACTIVE users back in July last year.

Launched in 2004, Facebook now has more than 845 million monthly active users, according to its statistics.

The number of DAILY active Facebook users is roughly half that number, at 483 million.

The popularity of Twitter has made it a fertile hunting ground for abuse by spammers and bot networks.

Akamai acquires Blaze

Akamai has acquired Blaze Software Inc, a provider of frontend optimization (FEO) technology. This will complement Akamai’s site acceleration solutions with technology designed to optimize the speed at which a web page is rendered, regardless of end user device.

Search, plus your world — by Google

Google has extended its search results by tapping into the data, photos, information and relationships in your Google+ and Picasa account — as long as you’re logged onto your Google account.

Google launched this extension to its existing search engine earlier this week. This opt-out integration will be gradually rolled out over the coming days for users using Google Search in English.

Prior to this extension, Google returned results based on its indexing engine of the public information available on the Internet and listed them in order of relevancy based on its Page Rank algorithm.

With Search Plus Your World – if you’re logged into your Google account – henever you do a search, Google Search will add three types of information to the search process and results listings:

  1. Personal Results. Photos and posts, related to your search term, from Google+ and Picasa — both your own and those shared specifically with you, that only you will be able to see on your results page;
  2. Profiles in Search. Helps you find people within your Google+ network or circles — both in autocomplete (as you type in the search term) and results listings;
  3. People and Pages. Helps you find people’s profiles and Google+ pages related to a specific topic or area of interest — not just in your social circles, and enables you to follow them with just a few clicks. This is available even if you’re not logged into Google.

To me, this feature is an enhancement. Information is drawn from my own account, to which I have permission to access anyway. The information is not available to anyone else doing a similar search on Google as long as he is not logged into my account.

It makes my search more relevant and it’s easier to do a comprehensive search that includes my Google+ and Picasa accounts (and perhaps other assets in the future).

The only problem is that it is now much easier for an intruder too, should my account ever be compromised or if I forget to log out of my account.

Note to self: Log out even if you’re stepping away for a coffee. What would have taken hours to consolidate across your different accounts can now be searched in one fell swoop while you’re raiding the fridge.

I share many people’s laments that this extension of search into my own social networks is limited to my Google+ account and Google assets —  and not my Twitter and Facebook accounts.

Both Twitter and Facebook have disallowed Google from crawling their content.

Facebook is keeping mum for the moment, but Twitter is crying foul — claiming that Google is leveraging unfair advantage by using its predominant Search presence to help its nascent Google+ network against other social networks. Two thirds of search in the US goes through Google Search.

Twitter used to allow Google to tap its data until recently, when it stopped the arrangement with Google but continued the partnership with Microsoft’s Bing search engine.

Search Plus Your World can be toggled on and off but it is default on at the start of every session. You need to go to Settings to permanently turn it off.

It’s beyond the man in the street to know if it was Twitter deliberately keeping Google out or whether it’s Google who preferred to be kept out so it’s Search Plus Your World is now “unfortunately” constrained to only Google+.

Only an investigation by the FTC can ascertain the posturing and vested interests involved, and organisations like the Electronic Privacy Information Center are already considering filing a anti-competitive complaint to the FTC regarding this.

By the way, here’s how to turn off the Google’s Search plus Your World permanently if you wish to do so.

During the three major SMRT disruptions in December 2011, Singaporeans flocked to online sites to share updates, find news and exchange views.

Experian Hitwise has released data about Singapore Internet users during that period.

Experian Hitwise found that top search variations used by Singaporeans include SMRT breakdown, SMRT twitter, SMRT CEO, SMRT CEO Saw Phaik Hwa, SMRT news, SMRT Facebook and SMRT disruption.

Variations for the word “SMRT” on all search engines in Singapore saw an increase of 38% in related search clicks on week ending 24 December, the week after the disruption of train services.

“SMRT” remained the key search term used by Singaporeans within the two weeks. Fast moving event-related search terms from the two periods include specific person searches, SMRT CEO and SMRT CEO Saw Phaik Hwa.

Ex-SMRT CEO, Saw Phaik Hwa, was widely discussed during the crisis.

Akamai to acquire Cotendo

Expected to happen in the first half of 2012, the combined technology and teams from the merger is expected to help accelerate pace of innovation in cloud and mobile optimisation.

Akamai has announced that it has signed an agreement to acquire Cotendo, a company that offers an integrated suite of Web and mobile acceleration services.

“By combining our innovative technology and employees with Akamai, we expect our customers and partners will gain access to a comprehensive, global platform and wider portfolio of leading-edge services supported by some of the most experienced providers in the industry,” said Ronni Zehavi, CEO and co-founder of Cotendo.Helping to mitigate the challenges of operating in a hyperconnected world, Akamai provides a secure platform over which businesses can engage users across the Web, mobile, cloud, or a mix of public and private network environments.

Cotendo, on the other hand, offers an integrated suite of Web and mobile acceleration services.

Founded in 2008, Cotendo is headquartered in Sunnyvale, CA, with a technology center in Israel. Cotendo currently has approximately 100 employees, with over 50 based in Israel.

The combination of the two companies’ technologies and teams is expected to increase the pace of innovation in the areas of cloud and mobile optimization.

Under terms of the agreement, Akamai will acquire all of the outstanding equity of Cotendo in exchange for a net cash payment of approximately $268 million, after expected purchase price adjustments, plus the assumption of outstanding unvested options to purchase Cotendo common stock.

The closing of the transaction, which is subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approvals, is expected to occur in the first half of 2012.
