Panasonic has launched a new Micro Four Thirds mirrorless interchangeable lens (MIL) camera.
It is available now at S$1,099 for either the single-lens or twin-lens kits (details within).
The Panasonic LUMIX DMC-GF5 comes in five colours: Black, White, Red, Brown, and Gold (limited edition).
The LUMIX DMC-GF5 is the latest member of the LUMIX G Micro System.
The GF5 remains compact despite having a built-in pop-up flash.
As an MIL camera, it marries the image quality and lens-changing flexibility of DSLRs with the compactness of point-and-shoot cameras.
The DMC-GF5 includes a built-in flash, 12.1-megapixel High Sensitivity Live MOS sensor and an improved Venus Engine for image processing.
Maximum ISO settings reach a maximum of 12,800.
The DMC-GF5 has a 920,000 dots, 3-inch touch display, which allows the user to choose where to focus and to release the shutter upon focus.
Compact enough to fit in the trousers pocket.
Touch zoom is also available simply by mounting the LUMIX G X Power Zoom Lens (H-PS14042 lens or H-PS45175).
The DMC-GF5 uses Contrast Auto-Focus (AF) to capture and lock on to fast-moving subjects within 0.9 seconds.
There are 23 scene modes with pre-canned settings for various photographic situations.
A Creative Control mode increases filter options to 14 from 6 in the DMC-GF3.
The GF5 has a 920k dots, 3-inch touch display.
The new filters are: Soft Focus, Dynamic Monochrome, Impressive Art, One Point Color, Cross Process, Low Key, Toy Effect and Star Filter.
The existing six filters are the conventional Expressive, Retro, High Key, Sepia, High Dynamic, and Miniature Effect filters.
A dedicated video record button records 1920 x 1080 Full HD video with stereo sound, in either AVCHD or MP4 format.
The DMC-GF5’s Intelligent Auto (iA) mode includes AF Tracking, Face Recognition, Intelligent D-range Control, Scene Selector and ISO Control.
Nice muscular design in the GF5.
iA Plus mode adjusts exposure compensation and white balance for superior image output.
A newly added angle detection sensor makes it possible to tell whether the photo was taken horizontally or vertically, whatever lens is used.
Note: the Micro Four Thirds lens has a crop factor of 2, so a 14-42mm lens has a 35mm equivalent focal length range of 28-84mm.
Leica showcased its slew of new products in an intimate session on the 32nd storey of Orchard Mandarin Hotel in Singapore.
This is part of Leica’s series of Das Wesentliche events in its main markets, after the inaugural event in Berlin last week. Prices in SGD below includes 7% GST.

The first Das Wesentliche event debuted in Berlin on 10 May.
The new products that were launched in Berlin are now being brought around the world to Leica’s main markets, including Tokyo and Singapore.
The Leica M Monochrom is an 18-megapixel full-frame digital rangefinder camera that shoots only in black-and-white.
It will be available in Singapore (S$12,260) in black chrome from August onwards.
Leica APO-Summicron-M 50 mm f/2 ASPH
The Leica APO-Summicron-M 50 mm f/2 ASPH lens has also been launched.
Leica describes it as its most outstanding lens. It will be available in Singapore (S$10,900) from the end of July 2012, in black finish.
Two limited editions of the Leica M9-P have been introduced to commemorate the close relationship between Leica and renowned Parisian house Hermès.
The limited edition Leica M9-P »Edition Hermès« is already available now (US$25,000) although only 300 will be available worldwide.
It comes in either single-lens or triple-lens kits. Both the camera body, lenses, camera bags and accessories have been specially designed by automotive designer Walter de’Silva.
Leica S-Adapter H for the S2
An even more exclusive Leica M9-P »Edition Hermès« – Série Limitée Jean-Louis Dumas will be available (US$50,000) in June 2012. Only 100 sets will be available worldwide. Each set will come with three lenses.
The 16.2-megapixel (effective pixels) Leica X2 is a compact camera with a huge sensor. The APS-C format CMOS image sensor is as big, if not bigger than many DSLRs.
It is targeted towards semi-professional photographers and photography enthusiasts. It will be available in Singapore (S$2,980) from June 2012.
Leica V-Lux 40 with 20x optical zoom
Another new compact camera is the 14.1-megapixel (effective pixels) Leica V-Lux 40, with a 20x optical zoom from 24 to 480 mm (35mm equivalent).
It will be available in Singapore (S$990) from June 2012 onwards.
Finally, the new Leica S-Adapter H enables the use of Hasselblad H lenses on the Leica S2.
It is now available (S$2,725) in Singapore.
Sony has announced three new digital imaging products: the SLT-A37, NEX-F3 and HDR-GW77. All three will be available from June 2012 onwards, although prices are yet to be announced.

The new SLT-A37 is Sony’s latest addition to its “Single Lens Translucent” line of “DSLRs” while the NEX-F3 adds to its line of mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras.
The HDR-GW77 keeps with the trend of ruggedised and water-proof gadgets for the growing segment of out-going and adventurous shooters.

Nikon’s newest NIKKOR lens is a fast, wide-angle 28mm f/1.8 fixed focal length in Nikon’s FX-format – for full frame DSLRs like the D800. It will be available in the US from the end of May 2012 at about US$700.
The new Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 28mm f/1.8G promises sharp focus and pleasing bokeh.
The new lens can also be used on DX-format cameras – such as the D3200 which was launched at the same time.
Used with DX-format cameras, the equivalent focal length will be 42mm.
New technologies used in the AF-S NIKKOR 28mm f/1.8G include Nano Crystal Coat and a Silent Wave Motor (SWM), enhancing image quality and rendering capabilities.
The Nano Crystal Coat prevents internal reflections that cause ghost and flare while the SWM enables extremely quiet autofocusing.
Two focus modes are offered: M/A (autofocus with manual override, MF priority) and M (manual focus).
The Leica S2 comes with a hefty price-tag: S$32,550. Now you can rent one from the Camera Rental Centre, at S$588 per day, together with a choice of two lenses.

The available lenses are the Elmarit-S 30mm f/2.8, Summarit-S 35mm f/2.5, Summarit-S 70mm f/2.5 and the APO-Macro Summarit-S f/2.5.

Fujifilm launched the X-Pro1 mirrorless interchangeable lens (MIL) camera in Singapore today.
The 16-MP retro beauty will be available here in March at S$2,400 for the camera body and S$900-S$1,000 for a basic lens. (All prices include 7% GST.)

First impressions
I tried out the camera during the launch event.
First impression, apart from the exorbitant price-tag, is that the retro design is incredibly beautiful.
It is relatively big and heavy compared to other MIL cameras.
But I love the direct controls enabled by the dials and well-placed buttons all over the camera.
You can adjust the shutter speed and exposure compensation on knurled metal dials on the top of the camera, and the 
aperture in ⅓ stop increments on a ring on the lens itself.
The shutter release also had the firm but springy feel reminiscent of film SLRs.
Focus was fast and pictures came out sharp and vividly coloured, with little noise even at high ISO and low light.
It’s definitely a camera to drool over.
The X-Pro1 is the first MIL camera from Fujifilm and features a 16-megapixel APS-C X-Trans CMOS sensor, a new X lens mount, a Hybrid Multi Viewfinder, and three prime lenses.
Three prime lenses have been launched together with the X-Pro1.
The sensor is physically larger than the 1-inch sensor in the Nikon J1/V1 MIL offering, and the four thirds and micro four thirds sensors in the MIL and DSLR cameras from Olympus and Panasonic.
The APS-C sensor has a crop factor of 1.5 and is the same size as those found in the Samsung NX and Sony NEX series of MIL cameras and most DSLRs.
New sensor colour filter array
Fujifilm claims that the X-Pro1 can produce pictures with lower noise and greater detail than other MIL and DSLR cameras.
The usual optical low pass filter – which reduces moire and false colour generation at the expense of image detail resolution – has been foregone.
The X Trans CMOS sensor has a new array design for its colour filter to remove moire.
Instead, a new colour filter array in the sensor array has replaced the usual Bayer-patterned array to reduce moiré in photos containing stripes/chequered patterns or other regular/repeating patterns.
16-megapixel APS-C sensor
In the array, RGB pixels are arranged in 6×6 pixel sets with high aperiodicity (randomness).
Increasing the degree of randomness eliminates the fundamental cause of moiré and false colours.
These are problems that occur in conventional arrays when shooting stripes and other repeating patterns.
The new sensor array contains slightly more green sensor elements than the traditional Bayer array, and is inspired by the irregular physical dispersion of silver halide particles in film, which did not suffer from moiré problems.
The additional image processing demands required by the new array is met by a new EXR Processor Pro which will maximise the full potential of the X-Trans CMOS sensor and deliver high speed and high precision image processing.
Prime FUJINON XF lenses
Three compact XF FUJINON fast aperture prime lenses will be available in March 2012.
The “XF18mmF2 R”, “XF 35mmF1.4 R” and “XF60mmF2.4 R Macro” lenses promise precise control over depth-of-field and excellent out-of-focus bokeh.
The new X-Mount has a short flange back distance of just 17.7mm.

Hybrid Multi Viewfinder
The Hybrid Viewfinder first appeared in the X100 and allows the user to instantly switch between an Optical Viewfinder and Electronic Viewfinder.
For viewing images in the brightest mode and to keep shutter lag to a minimum, users should choose the Optical Viewfinder.
Those wanting focus confirmation, exposure information, white balance information and depth of field indicators should switch to the Electronic Viewfinder.
This retro beauty has a high drool factor.
Simulated film effects
Leveraging on Fujifilm’s photo film legacy, the X-Pro1 comes with 10 in-camera pre-canned special effects that simulate different types traditional film effects in the photos, from different film types to different film development techniques.
