Microsoft to demonstrate Windows 8 operating system

Tuesday, September 13th, 2011

The new operating system will run on tablets, desktop and laptop computers via a touch screen, mouse or keyboard. It will also be backward compatible to existing Windows software.

Windows 8 represents Microsoft’s hope of wrestling market share for tablet computers from Apple iPads and Android tablets.

Microsoft will unveil the next iteration of their Windows operating system software today at a developers conference in Anaheim, California. A preview of the design was first released in June this year.

This will be the first time that a Windows operating system is capable of running on chip technology from ARM. Microsoft aims to make Windows 8 capable of running smaller, thinner tablet computers with battery life that can rival that of the market leader – Apple’s iPad.

Out of 60 million media tablets expected to be shipped 2011, 74 percent will be Apple’s iPads, according to an August forecast by IHS. The global market is forecasted to rise to 275.3 million units in 2015, with Apple expected to account for 43.6 percent of the market.

Windows 8 design

The user interface for Windows 8 resembles Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 smartphone operating system – it uses digital tiles instead of icons to help users navigate between programs. The tiles are on the computer’s home screen can display updated information from inside applications, so that users can see the info at a glance without having to fire up those apps.

Singapore loves Google+ most in Asia Pacific

Friday, September 2nd, 2011

In the Asia Pacific region, Google+ is most popular in Singapore, followed by India, Australia, New Zealand and Hong Kong, according to data from Experian Hitwise.

Singapore is also the only country in which Google+ has enjoyed a continued rate of adoption – other countries have seen its popularity decline after a peak in mid-July, following its initial beta-launch in end June.

Experian Hitwise is an online competitive intelligence service that operates in the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong and Singapore.

Globally, Singapore’s usage of Google+ was ranked sixth in the Social Networking and Forums category.

Google+’s popularity in Singapore was attributed to the dominance of the Google’s search engine in Singapore, with over 34.48 per cent of upsteam traffic to Google+ originating from the Google Singapore search engine.

Experian HitwiseAmong the countries, Hong Kong secured the lowest rate of Google+ adoption despite being the heaviest users of social networks – almost 60 per cent of visits are to platforms like Facebook and YouTube, while 40 per cent of the visits are to local Chinese forums and social media including Discuss, Uwants and Sina Weibo etc. Globally, it was ranked 90th.

Google+ also performed strongly in India achieving 14th place at its peak. This could be attributed to the rapid growth of India’s mobile and Internet community, its growing economy, as well as the increasing popularity of social media.

Despite minimal impact seen on Facebook visits so far after the launch in all markets except Hong Kong, Google+ sees key reliance on other Google properties such as Google Search, YouTube and Gmail to direct and refer visitors to the new Social platform.

Asian cities still the fastest, Myanmar now the most dangerous — says the Akamai Q1 2011 State of the Internet report

Sunday, July 31st, 2011

Asian cities again claim the fastest connection speeds in the world, with HK maintaining its lead in clocking the highest peak connection speed. Myanmar has pipped Russia to generate the most attack traffic.

Q1 2011 State of the Internet analysis from AkamaiAkamai has released its Q1 State of the Internet report for 2011. It is a leading provider of cloud optimisation services. Based on data gathered from the Akamai Internet Platform, which carries between 15-30 percent of the world’s Web traffic, the report provides insight into key global Internet statistics such as the world’s fastest and slowest regions for connection speed, the most frequent origins of attack traffic, and the highest-performing geographies for mobile connectivity, as well as resulting trends over time.

The main findings from the quarterly State Of The Internet (SOTI) report paints the following picture:

SpeedAverage measured connection speed by country/region

  • Global average connection speed increased 23 percent year over year to 2.1 Mbps.
  • Cities in Asia have the fastest connection speeds in the World. The 100 fastest cities worldwide is dominated by Asian countries, with 61 cities in Japan, five cities in South Korea, and Hong Kong. Lyse, Norway is the fastest city in Europe, at number 33 out of 100. 18 U.S. cities made the top 100 list, with Riverside in California ranking as the fastest U.S. city, at number 39 out of 100.
  • Average peak connection speed by country/regionSouth Korea has the highest level of “high broadband” (> 5 Mbps), with 60% of connections to Akamai at speeds above 5 Mbps.
  • South Korea has also achieved the highest average connection speed at 14.4 Mbps.
  • Hong Kong has maintained its position as having the highest average peak connection speed.
  • Other cities in Japan and South Korea continued to hold many of the top spots for highest average and average peak connection speeds by city.

Attack traffic - top originating countries/regions

Attack traffic from mobile networks - top originating countries/regions

The latest findings reflected in the report show some significant changes in Q1 2011 related to sources of attack traffic. Most notably, Myanmar not only made its first appearance on the list, but also ranked #1 by generating 13 percent of attack traffic during this period.

Russia dropped from top into 4th place, accounting for 7.7 percent of global observed attack traffic, down from 10 percent in the previous quarter. Among other changes, the United States rose from 5th to 2nd, accounting for 10 percent of observed global attack traffic.

For attack traffic originating from mobile network providers, Italy remained in the top spot, responsible for 25 percent of observed attack traffic in the first quarter.

Mobile Consumption & Connectivity

In the first quarter of 2011, the average measured connection speed for known mobile providers worldwide ranged from a high of slightly more than 6 Mbps to a low of 163 kbps.  A service provider from Poland delivered the highest average mobile connection speed in the first quarter 2011, bumping last quarter’s fastest provider from Greece to the number two spot.

Akamai is the leading global service provider for accelerating content and business processes online.Consumption figures indicate that during Q1 2011, seven percent of the surveyed mobile providers consumed an average of 1 GB of content per month, while 73 percent consumed an average of 100 MB. The remaining 20 percent consumed less than 100 MB.

As a result of Akamai’s recently announced partnership with Ericsson, the report now includes data collected by the equipment provider. Overall mobile data traffic, as measured by Ericsson, experienced 130 percent yearly growth in the first quarter, and is now more than double the volume of voice traffic.

Akamai’s SOTI analysis

This is the fourth year that Akamai is publishing its quarterly analysis of Global Connectivity, Attack Traffic and Broadband Consumption.

More than 584 million unique IP addresses from 237 countries/regions connected to the Akamai Platform in Q1 2011. This represents 5.2 percent more IP addresses when compared with the fourth quarter of 2010, and an increase of 20 percent compared to the same quarter a year ago.

Consistent with last quarter’s report, the top ten countries/regions accounted for nearly 70 percent of the total IP addresses, indicating that the majority of the world’s unique IP addresses are concentrated within a relatively small number of geographies.  This quarter saw Italy enter the top ten with its 11 percent quarter-over-quarter growth while Canada dropped out of the top ten.

Unexpected loss from TomTom as portable navigation devices lose popularity

Friday, July 22nd, 2011

Europe’s largest maker of portable navigation devices reported a surprise second-quarter loss after writing down the value of assets to reflect a declining market for those devices.

TomTom, Europe's largest maker of portable navigation devicesThe company reported a net loss of 489 million euros compared with a profit of 34 million euros a year earlier. The average forecast of nine analysts surveyed by Bloomberg was net income of 10.7 million euros.

Portable navigation devices from TomTomThe company took an impairment charge of 512 million euros in the quarter “reflecting the reduced outlook” for the personal navigation device market. Of the charge, 473 million euros related to goodwill. Sales decreased 13 percent to 314 million euros.

Earlier on June 27, TomTom had reduced its full-year profit and sales forecasts, saying U.S. demand for its devices had declined faster than anticipated and that consumers were opting for cheaper navigation systems.

Amsterdam-based TomTom was founded in 1991 and listed in 2005After the statement, TomTom’s stock plunged 27 percent the day after. Its shares have declined 54 percent this year, reducing the market value of the Amsterdam-based company value to 812 million euros. Its U.S. rival Garmin has gained 5.6 percent this year.

Built-in car navigation from TomTomMaaike Noordhuis of Bloomberg reports that TomTom, which competes with Garmin and Google, aims to get more revenue from maps, services and built-in systems in cars amid a slowdown in sales of portable navigation devices.

China sales of iPhone and iPad helps Apple profits beat estimates

Wednesday, July 20th, 2011

Apple’s stock price surged past $400 for the first time, after record sales of iPhones and iPads pushed third-quarter profit beyond estimates. Net income during the period was $7.31 billion ($7.79 per share), which is more than double of last year’s $3.25 billion ($3.51 per share). This was helped by iPhone sales in China, where total revenue jumped sixfold to $3.8 billion.

Apple's Q3 2011 Unaudited Summary DataOverall sales jumped 82 percent to $28.6 billion. Analysts had predicted a profit of $5.87 per share and a revenue of $25 billion. Apple sold 20.3 million iPhones and 9.3 million iPads in the third quarter, which ended June 25. Mac computer sales were 3.95 million

Having overcome supply shortages for the iPad 2 after its March debut, saw sales of the iPad soar, reported Adam Satariano of Bloomberg. The tablet is now Apple’s second-largest source of revenue – behind the iPhone – less than two years after its initial launch.

After the results were released, Apple shares shot up 7.5 percent to $405 in extended trading. The stock is up 17 percent this year.

The report eased investors’ concerns that sales would suffer from the lack of a new iPhone, which isn’t expected until September. The Cupertino, California-based company also has been operating without the day-to-day attention of Chief Executive Officer Steve Jobs, who has been on medical leave since January.

“China was very key to our results,” said Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook, who has been handling day-to-day leadership at Apple’s headquarters in Cupertino, California, since Chief Executive Officer Steve Jobs’s medical leave in January.

Apple’s results assuaged worries by investors that sales would suffer because a new iPhone will only be available in September. Its foray into China and other fast-growing economies helped compensate slower growth in the U.S. Sales in China, Taiwan and Hong Kong accounted for $8.8 billion in the first three quarters of the fiscal year, Apple revealed.

The Wall Street Journal has cited unmamed sources familiar with the issue that since Jobs went on leave, some members of Apple’s board have discussed CEO succession with executive recruiters. The talks included at least one head of a high-profile technology company, the Journal added.

The results also substantiated the belief that tablets are cannibalizing sales from traditional personal computers. Apple claims that 86 percent of Fortune 500 companies are testing or deploying the iPad, and disclosed that sales of the tablet beat those of the Mac computer among primary and secondary schools.

Windows 8 previews by Microsoft

Friday, June 3rd, 2011

Windows President in Microsoft, Steven Sinofsky, previewed the next version of the Windows operating system that will likely premier in March 2012.

The radically revamped OS works on tablets with touch screens; runs on desktop and laptop computers with touchscreen, mouse or keyboards; runs existing Windows software and runs on both Intel and ARM chips.

Windows 8 is set to challenge the dominance of Apple’s iPad iOS and Google’s Android.

Sinofsky gave a preview of Windows 8 on a 10.6-inch touch-screen tablet during the AllThingsD’s D9 Conference in Rancho Palos Verdes, California.

A 30-minute demonstration was subsequently given at the Computex 2011 in Taiwan by Mike Angiulo, Microsoft corporate vice president.

In appearance, it resembles Windows Phone 7 – Microsoft’s operating system for smartphones – using “tiles” instead of icons to represent applications. The tiles on the computer’s start screen can be automatically updated to display the latest information from applications. For instance, a stock ticker app could display stock quotes right on the tile without requiring users to open the app.

Windows 8 will be the first full version of Windows capable of operating on ARM chips which has been the sole supplier of tablet CPUs since Apple launched its iPad in 2010.

Citing Jefferies Group, Bloomberg reports that the number of tablets sold globally will almost quadruple this year to 70 million units from 18 million in 2010. This will more than double to 158 million in 2012. Apple, which will control some 64 percent of the 2011 tablet market, will see its market share fall to 41 percent in 2012.

BlackBerry PlayBook’s first day sales beats Motorola’s Xoom and the Samsung Galaxy Tab.

Friday, April 22nd, 2011
First day sales of the newly launched BlackBerry PlayBook from RIM was said to reach 50,000 on April 19. RIM is expected to sell 500,000 of the 7 inch tablets in its first quarter ending in May.

BlackBerry PlayBook from RIMThe first day sales number of 50,000 includes pre-sales and was estimated by an analyst at RBC Capital Markets. This appears to surpass the equivalent first day sales for Motorola’s Xoom and the Samsung Galaxy Tab.

Analyst Mike Abramsky’s staff checked 70 retails stores and found 11% of the locations that stocked the device had sold out, according to Matt Hamblen from Computerworld.

This may come as a surprise to many observers in view of the negative reviews that have bombarded Research In Motion (RIM) over the launch of the tablet computer.

Punters feel the software for the PlayBook was not ready yet because native support for email, contact and calendar apps were not available. Such support may only be provided as an over the air update in summer.

In the meantime, only those who own a BlackBerry smartphone can enable the PlayBook to access these basic apps via a Bluetooth connection. The tablet is only available in WiFi configuration with 3G available only in summer.

It is still too early to tell whether the PlayBook will be able to grab any market share from a tablet market seeing an influx of competitors to Apple’s iPad.

Apple profit almost double after iPhone’s Verizon debut

Thursday, April 21st, 2011
Profit for the second quarter almost doubled due to iPhone sales via Verizon, even though sales for newly launched iPad 2 were below estimates because of supply shortage.

Fears of growth being affected by supply disruptions from Japan’s earthquake and tsunami were also allayed.

2nd Quarter A year earlier Bloomberg survey
Net income
(almost doubled)
$5.99 billion,
$6.40 a share
$3.07 billion,
$3.33 a share
$5.04 billion,
$5.39 a share
Sales
(up 83%)
$24.7 billion $13.5 billion $23.4 billion

Apple began selling the iPhone through Verizon Wireless in February, and launched the iPad 2 on March 11.

Demand for the iPad has been so strong that Apple has not been able to make enough, leading to sales that were lower than what most analysts predicted.

2nd Qtr Analysts predictions
iPhones sold through Verizon 18.7 million 16.3 million
iPads sold 4.69 million 6.1 million
Mac computers 3.76 million 3.6 million
iPod media players 9.02 million 9.8 million

“Apple is ramping up production as it prepares to start selling the tablet computer in 13 additional countries this month”, Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook told Bloomberg.

Still, sales of products in the country may be $200 million lower as consumers coping with the temblor and tsunami buy fewer gadgets, he said.
