Android compatibility for the PlayBook

Saturday, April 2nd, 2011
Having had only 25,000 apps in BlackBerry App World, RIM’s PlayBook will tap the 150,000 apps in the Android Market to give it a headstart, while ramping up the number of PlayBook specific apps to stand against the staggering 350,000 apps in Apple’s App Store.

RIM launches the PlayBook on April 19RIM will be opening the PlayBook to Android apps to provide customers a wider choice of apps.

Software tools for making Android apps work on the PlayBook will be available this summer, Tyler Lessard, head of RIM’s developer relations told Bloomberg in an interview.

Android is the world’s fastest-growing smartphone platform and is also gaining market share for tablet computers, based on data on global shipments from Strategy Analytics below.

Percentage of global shipments Android iPad
Oct to Dec 2010 22 % 75%
Jul to Sep 2010 2.3 % 95 %

Although developers can port Android apps for the PlayBook, Lessard states that developers should still create programs specifically for the PlayBook to make the most of its multimedia performance and ensure their apps work as well as possible.

Bloomberg reports that “Dozens” of games for the PlayBook will be released this year through Unity Technologies’s Union game development tool.

HTC and Acer switch fortunes as smartphones and tablets outmode netbooks and PCs

Thursday, March 31st, 2011
HTC is now valued at 22.2 times reported earnings, compared with 10.6 for Acer. Only in February last year, HTC had a PE ratio of 11 times, while Acer was at 22.

Taipei-based HTC is the world’s largest maker of handsets using operating systems from Google and Microsoft. Acer is the world’s second-largest manufacturer of personal computers.

HTC makes Android and Windows Mobile smartphonesThe wheel of fortune for the two companies seems to have turned as sales of smartphones and tablet computers grew at the expense of notebooks and personal computers.

Prior to the explosive growth, set off by Apple, of the smartphone and tablet sector, Acer had snatched the lead from Asus for a similarly explosive growth in the netbook sector.

From HTC’s low in February last year, it has rallied some 264 percent, while Acer has fallen by 36 percent. According to Kevin Chang from Citigroup, Acer is the biggest seller of consumer notebooks in the developed world.

Acer won the pole position for the netbook market from AsusIn a report dated March 28, Chang wrote that “Consumers are not buying notebooks because they have already spent money on new tablet PCs or on upgrading their handsets from feature phones to smartphones.” He adds that Acer could become “a much smaller company in the next few years,” if tablet PC sales grow to exceed those for notebooks.

Not surprisingly, Chang has a “sell” rating on Acer’s stock and a “buy” recommendation on HTC.

A March 24 report from the Goldman Sachs Group estimates that HTC’s market worth may reach $100 billion in the next three to five years from $30 billion now, as the company ships a possible 200 million smartphones and 30 million tablet computers a year.

HTC’s value has quadrupled since reaching a low of $7.4 billion in February last year, while Acer’s market capitalization has declined to $5.6 billion from a peak of $9.4 billion reached in January 2010.

Firefox 4 breaks its predecessor’s first 24-hr download record

Saturday, March 26th, 2011

The pent-up demand arising from the delay of its launch from November last year has resulted in a whopping 8.75 million downloads in the first 24-hours following its launch earlier this week on March 22.

It easily trounced the 2.35 million downloads that Internet Explorer 9 garnered in the first 24-hours of its launch just a week prior.

Firefox 4 is downloaded 8.75 times within first 24 hours

The number of Firefox 4 downloads in the first 24 hours surpassed the previous record set by Firefox 3 when the predecessor captured a cool 8 million downloads during the first 24 hours after its launch in June 2008.
Firefox 4 is available on Windows, Mac OS and Linux. It supports Windows XP while IE9 doesn’t. Many observers see that as the main reason why it has drawn more than 3 times the number of downloads that IE9 recorded in its first 24 hours.

Windows XP accounts for more than 61 percent of all windows-based machines that went online in February, according to web metrics firm Net Applications.

While Mozilla has chided Microsoft for leaving Windows XP users stuck with the two-and-a-half year old IE8, the latter supports only Windows 7, Vista and Windows Server based PCs because it wants to leverage the more advanced technology available in these newer operating systems and does not want IE9 to be constrained by the older technology in 10-year-old Windows XP.

In the meantime, visit http://glow.mozilla.org/ for a live status of the number of Firefox 4 downloads worldwide.

RIM’s First-Quarter forecasts behind estimates

Friday, March 25th, 2011

Research In Motion (RIM), maker of BlackBerry smartphones, has forecast first-quarter revenues and profits that fail to meet analysts’ estimates. Its launch of new models like the Torch has failed to stop a slide in its market share.

The average of analysts’ estimates were compiled by Bloomberg for comparison. Below are the key numbers:

First Quarter Forecast RIM Analysts average estimate
Profit per share $1.47 – $1.55 $1.66
Revenue $5.2 – 5.6 billion $5.65 billion
Gross Margin (% sales after production costs) 41.5% 42.7%
BlackBerrys shipped (4th Qtr) 14.9 million 15 million

In the meantime, Bloomberg quotes Pierre Ferragu from Sanford C. Bernstein & Co as saying that “The company’s sales in the high end have been shrinking for the last 12 months, even if the launch of the Torch has slowed down the trend in the last two quarters.”

Although RIM has traditionally been the darling of large corporations because of its secure messaging, it has seen customers adopting rival devices.

Hugo Miller of Bloomberg reports that JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America and Citigroup are some of the banks that has begun testing iPhones and Android devices late last year, according to at least three people familiar with the trials.

The table below summarises how RIM’s share of worldwide smartphone sales has slipped from a year earlier, compared to its rivals.

RIM PlayBook debuts in US on April 19

RIM will be launching the PlayBook in the US on April 19, while the company is already taking orders. The company revealed that the tablet would be able to play apps from Google’s Android.

The PlayBook will strive to chip at the huge market share that Apple has enjoyed with its iPad and iPad2.

The iPad has has a full year’s headstart over the PlayBook and has sold over 15 million units so far. Apple also claims that 65 percent of Fortune 100 companies are testing or deploying the iPad, including Procter & Gamble.

This is the same market sector that RIM targets.

Japan disaster fallout: Adobe tempers forecast

Tuesday, March 22nd, 2011

Lower sales in Japan due to the Mar 11 disasters. Adobe forecasts second-quarter profit that missed analysts’ estimates because of earthquake and tsunami impact on sales.

Adobe forecast affected by Japan disastersAdobe Systems Inc. is the largest maker of graphic design software in the world. It has reduced its sales forecast by $50 million because of the disasters in Japan – its second largest market after the U.S. According to analysts, Japan accounts for 10 – 15 percent of Adobe’s revenue each quarter.

Profit for the current quarter is expected to be 47 – 54 cents. This compares with a 56 cents average based on analysts’ projections compiled by Bloomberg.

“We saw a noticeable drop in our revenue,”Aaron Ricadela from Businessweek quotes  Mark Garrett, Adobe’s Chief Financial Officer.

IE9 downloads vs the rest of the world

Friday, March 18th, 2011
Microsoft has claimed that Internet Explorer 9 has been downloaded 2.35 million times in the first 24 hours since its official release on Monday night. This ranks it behind Firefox and Opera but ahead of Safari.

Mozilla Firefox 3 was fastest off the block when it clocked 8 million downloads in the first 24 hours after its launch in June 2008. Next was Opera 11 with 6.7 million downloads in the first day after launch in December 2010.

Both browsers were ahead of Internet Explorer 9 in terms of number of downloads in the first 24 hours.

Following behind was Apple’s Safari which reached 6 million downloads but only after three days. Data for Chrome were unavailable.

The above statistics were compiled by Gavin Clarke of The Register and based on claims by the companies themselves without any means of external verification.

I have summarised the compilation below. Also included are downloads statistics for Angry Birds, the Mac App Store, Nokia Ovi store and the all-time-favourite – Adobe Flash Player.

Ransom for a kidnapped phone – $148

Wednesday, March 16th, 2011

With the stress and inconvenience of losing one’s mobile phone, half of those who had lost one were willing to pay an average of S$148 to get their phone back, a survey of mobile phone owners in Singapore found.

Average ransom people are willing to pay for their lost phone. That is assuming that the finder or thief offers the owner the chance to redeem their lost or stolen mobile phone. Most of the time, it’s “finders keepers” and the owners are laden with the inconvenience of reconstructing lost contact lists and worried over their private information falling into wrong hands.

Victims who have become celebrities overnight because the saucy secrets from their mobile phones have been splashed all over the Internet can attest to the stress involved.

In Singapore, where each person owns – on average – more than one mobile phone, about half (52%) of Singaporeans have lost their phones before. Despite that, only slightly more than a third (37%) currently have a password protecting their devices. These are some of the findings found by a survey commissioned by Symantec Corporation in January 2011.

With smartphones being so capable, people are relying more on them to communicate, work and play. Almost ninety percent of “Singaporeans never leave home without their mobile phones and nearly half cannot live without their phones” [Synovate 2009].

Norton Mobile Survey commissioned by SymantecThe  Norton Mobile Survey found “a whopping 89 percent of victims noting that they could neither remotely lock nor wipe the phone’s memory after the device was stolen or lost.”

“As smartphones become more pervasive in our lives, there is a greater need to protect the data on such devices.  This is one of the reasons why Norton is taking security beyond the PC to develop solutions that protect consumers, regardless of the device they use,” says Effendy Ibrahim, Internet Safety Advocate and Consumer Business Head, Asia, Symantec.

On the whole, a significant number of Singaporeans consider security factors before making a mobile phone purchase, with 72 percent noting that they are more likely to make a purchase if their mobile device or software is able to be locked remotely and has the ability to erase all the data on their device remotely.

Protection

So what does Symantec have to counter cybercriminals cashing in on increasing prevalence and reliance on smartphones? Norton Mobile Security has been introduced as part of the Norton Everywhere three-part initiative, which will address some of today’s most common issues for smartphones, including device loss and data protection.

Norton Mobile Security will allow users to locate and remotely wipe or lock their lost or stolen Android phones with a quick text message.  Consumers can currently download a free limited-trial beta version directly from the Android Market.

This is what 17% of Singaporeans would rather do than to lose their mobile phones, a survey of mobile phone owners in Singapore found.

Other noxious things that these 17% of mobile phone owners were willing to put themselves through – rather than lose their mobile phones – include getting a root canal and eating rotten eggs.

In fact, “32 percent of Singaporeans would rather lose their childhood photographs than lose their mobile phones,” the Norton Mobile Survey found.

The Norton Mobile Survey is based on research conducted in January 2011 by The Leading Edge, an independent market research firm, on behalf of Symantec Corporation. The Leading Edge conducted an online survey among 500 adults, between the ages 18 and 54, within each of the following six markets: Singapore, India, Australia, Taiwan, China and Japan.

The Singapore sample size comprised the following:

Gender Percentage of 500 respondents
Female 51%

93% of 4.5 million tablets sold in 2010Q3 were iPads

Friday, February 25th, 2011

This is hardly surprising since the iPad has been the only tablet around for most of last year, until Samsung’s Galaxy Tab.

ABI ResearchAccording to data from ABI Research, of the approximately 4.5 million tablets sold in the third quarter of 2010, about 93 percent were Apple iPads.

The original iPad went on sale on 3 April 2010. Reports anticipate the announcement of the iPad 2 next week on 2 Mar 2011.

Samsung’s well-received Android-based Galaxy Tab was launched late last year, while Motorola’s Xoom Android-based tablet became available yesterday. Research In Motion plans to release four versions of its Playbook this year.
