Photo of the Day: I was walking to Fullerton Bay Hotel for the launch of the BlackBerry Z30 on Thursday evening when this majestic cumulonimbus cloud caught my eye.
It was towering menacingly over the Marina Bay Sands and was the only thing I’ve come across that was capable of counterbalancing the imposing hotel buildings.

Giant Calvus Cumulonimbus cloud versus Marina Bay Sands. Which will blink first? Photo taken with a Samsung NX2000 mirrorless interchangeable lens camera with a 20-50mm lens. Photo credit: John Tan.
It was getting dark and I grabbed a quick snapshot with the Samsung NX2000 that I had with me.

Progress Software has boosted its cloud toolset with the availability of Progress Pacific’s new data connectivity and application capabilities as part of its Progress Pacific application platform-as-a-service (aPaaS).

Progress Pacific is a new Application Platform as a Service (aPaas) for building and managing powerful, data-rich business applications on any cloud, mobile or social platform.
Progress Pacific includes the new Progress DataDirect Cloud service, Progress Rollbase, and Progress OpenEdge 11.3 development software.
“Customer and partner response to the Progress Pacific launch in June has been extremely positive and we are now delivering on our vision. It’s clear that the move to aPaaS is gaining momentum as time-to-market and data capabilities in new apps are key requirements for developers and end users. Pacific addresses these needs with rich data, visual design and open deployment capabilities in a single platform,” John Goodson, Chief Product Officer at Progress Software.
These new capabilities further Progress Software’s strategy to give anyone the ability quickly create, evolve, and customize connected business applications on demand.
The product is a platform which simplifies application development and deployment for anyone who wants to develop apps for consumers or businesses.
Think an easy drag-and-drop tool that does not require developers to have complicated programming language capability which includes new data connectivity and application capabilities.
The idea is to make modern application development a breeze to allow developers, independent software vendors and enterprises to create and roll out apps to meet the needs of their internal employees or customers’ needs.
Afterall, we live in a mobile world now where apps is the new rule of the game.
Below are more technical descriptions of the new capabilities.

The PhotoNote app digitses analog material into an online photo notebook – for more efficient management and more effective communications.

New freemium app from Fuji Xerox: PhotoNote – an online photo notebook.
SkyDesk PhotoNote captures and stores analog content into digital form for more efficient storage and access and enables these content to be easily shared with co-workers, partners or customers for more effective communications.
Hand-written-character recognition
PhotoNote’s digitisation uses Fuji Xerox’s proprietary character-recognition technology for Optical Character Recognition (OCR) that includes recognition of hand-written characters.
The technology mimics a human’s visual information processing and this is the first time such technology is used on commercialised software.
Currently, only English and Japanese are supported.
Most of the features are free, with additional storage and Excel conversion feature available as paid options (prices within).
The app works with iOS and Android and is available in Singapore, Australia and Japan.
PhotoNote digitises physical memos or meeting notes jotted down during business discussions and stores them in the cloud – enabling easy access by the user and quick sharing of the information with others.
To digitise printed material, forms, handwritten memos and whiteboards, simply snap a photo using a smartphone or digital camera and upload the photo onto SkyDesk on the cloud.
The PhotoNote app automatically conducts image processing and OCR conversion, storing the image together with tags and additional text annotations, as well as text data from the conversion.
Easy search can be done on the database of PhotoNote records based on recorded time/date, tags, and the converted text.
