Review: Belkin BoostCharge Pro 3-in-1 Wireless Charger with MagSafe 15W

Tuesday, September 20th, 2022

I asked an Apple fan what his favourite Apple accessory was, and he gave me this 3-min rundown of why he loves his BoostCharge 3-in-1 Wireless Charger from Belkin.

Belkin’s aesthetic BoostCharge Pro 3-in-1 15W Wireless Charger offers convenience and fast power with MagSafe technology.

Belkin’s aesthetic BoostCharge Pro 3-in-1 15W Wireless Charger offers convenience and fast power with MagSafe technology.

Dylan currently uses the BoostCharge 3-in-1 7.5W Wireless Charger for his iPhone, Apple Watch and AirPods Pro.

He is planning to buy the BoostCharge Pro 3-in-1 Wireless Charger with MagSafe 15W for his new Apple 14 Pro Max, Watch Series 8 and AirPods Pro.

The first and foremost benefit of the 3-in-1 Wireless Charger is that Dylan is able to charge three devices simultaneously with only one power outlet.

This is convenient both at home and in his office — especially at home since his other family members are also Apple fans with iPhones, Watches and AirPods to charge as well.

When he doesn’t have THREE available power outlets (or multiplugs), he’d usually have to charge only one device at a time and only move on to the next device when the previous one had completed charging.

Dylan loves how compact and tidy the wireless charger is – instead of three separate charging cables to three separate devices, there is only one cable from the power outlet to the 3-in-1 wireless charger.

And the upright charger for the iPhone doubles up as a phone stand so he can talk handsfree, FaceTime or record a voice memo while the phone is on the wireless charging stand.

Review: Huawei FreeBuds Pro 2 TWS Bluetooth Earbuds

Friday, August 26th, 2022

Two years after Huawei launched its first FreeBuds Pro flagship True Wireless Stereo (TWS) Bluetooth earbuds, the Chinese company has released its successor. Co-engineered with French Audio experts Devialet, the FreeBuds Pro 2 offers flagship-level audio quality, great active noise cancellation (ANC), at a mid-range price.

I’ve been trying the Huawei FreeBuds Pro 2 prior to its launch in Singapore. It is available in Silver Frost (seen here) as well as Ceramic White and Silver Blue.

The FreeBuds Pro 2 is Huawei’s latest flagship TWS Bluetooth (5.2) earbuds.

The silicone earbud tip provides good sealing and does a good job of keeping out ambient noise even without turning on the active noise canceling mode.

The earbuds are a snug fit and didn’t fall out even when I went for a mild jog.

Huawei FreeBuds Pro 2 freshly unboxed. In the box are the earbuds in the wireless charging case, three pairs of differently-sized silicone ear tips, one USB-C charging cable, as well as a Quick Start Guide and Warranty Card.

Weighing only 6.1g, it’s easy to forget they’re in the ears and I was able to wear them comfortably for long hours.

Review: Google Pixel 6a Mid-Tier Android Smartphone with Tensor

Friday, July 22nd, 2022

The Google Pixel 6a (S$749) and Pixel Buds Pro (S$299) are now available for pre-orders in Singapore. Both will physically hit the shelves on 28 July 2022. Thanks to Google Singapore, I have been trying out the Pixel 6a for the past month. Here’s a quick 5-min review of its highlights.

The Google Pixel 6a and case freshly unboxed. I like the sage colour and glass back although none of that is visible once you slap on the phone case.

The Google Pixel 6a ships with Android 12 and is positioned as a premium phone at a more affordable price.

It is priced higher than the previous mid-tier Pixel “a”-subseries phones (eg. the launch price for the Pixel 4a was only S$499) and sits at the top of the mid-range market in terms of price tag.

The Pixel 6a is powered by Google Tensor – the same chip behind Google’s flagship Pixel 6 phones.

Some of the features that the Pixel 6a shares with the flagship Pixel 6 Pro include Magic Eraser, Real Tone, Night Sight and live translation.

So in a sense the Pixel 6a can be also seen as Pixel 6 “Lite” ie. the starting model of a flagship model.

In reality, it straddles the gap between the flagship phone segment and the mid-range segment.

For those hesitant to purchase the Google 6 series, you can consider the Pixel 6a with slightly lower feature set, at a correspondingly lower price.

Review: Philips Hue Play HDMI Sync Box for Immersive Surround Lighting

Wednesday, July 13th, 2022

Having jazzed up my home entertainment space with smart accented lighting by two Philips Hue Play light bars, I decided to up the ante to sync the lighting effects with the movies that I was watching on my TV, as well as my music and gaming – to achieve a more immersive experience.

The Philips Hue Play HDMI Sync Box is a fantastic way to liven up your entertainment space for movies, gaming and music. Before (bottom) and After (top). Note how the corresponding coloured light leaps off the TV onto the surroundings.

We are all familiar with surround sound, where the sound is expanded beyond a mono or stereo speakers to encapsulate the listener for a more immersive audio experience.

Signify is offering surround lighting with its Philips Hue Play HDMI Sync Box (RRP: S$419) – extending the visual experience from the confines of the television (or computer monitor) to beyond the display itself to the surroundings.

What you’ll need to set up a synchronised surround lighting from scratch (sold separately): Philips Hue Play HDMI Sync Box, Philips Hue Play light bars, Philips Hue Bridge. You’ll also need the free Philips Hue app and Philips Hue Sync apps to set up and program the lights and synchronisation.
