Clarity CEO Soon Ong’s vision is to help customers visualise their AV needs

Wednesday, November 14th, 2012

Service quality, coupled with product knowledge and deep experience enables Clarity staff to understand what their customers need and come up with a customised solution that combines the best of breed from multiple brands to offer the best performance for the buck.

I first met the affable CEO of Clarity Group during his recent launch of the Datasat RS20i Digital Audio Processor in Singapore.

We met up again today for a 30-minute interview that spilled into an hour-long conversation about the state of the AV industry and his vision for the homegrown company that his great-grandfather founded 83 years ago in 1929.

Himself a music enthusiast that plays the guitar and spends his personal time writing, producing and recording music, Soon emphasises the importance of getting a clear understanding of the customer’s needs before recommending any systems.

He believes in delivering a total AV solution that is customised to the customer’s needs and comprising a mix-and-match of the best of class components from different brands to offer a true-to-life AV experience that is also value-for-money.

Soon reckons that the hardware components account for only half of the performance of an AV solution – other factors such as the room design and materials are also critical.

That is why Clarity does not sell any “cookie-cutter, off-the-shelf AV systems” that are commonly sold in electrical outlets.

“I rather have people who know their products well, than have sales staff that market a mediocre product well,” intimated Soon Ong, CEO, Clarity Group.

Soon feels his staff can value-add by selecting the best and most suitable components and by advising on the set-up and optimisation of the customer’s sound room or private cinema.

The expertise is also monetised in the form of consultancy services for commercial properties and establishments.

From the cordial chat that I had with Soon, the impression that I came away with was that this was someone who felt passionate about music and technology – whose primary concern was in giving his customers the best performance for the money they are spending.

Clarity Experience Centre

Soon plans to set up an concept demo cum experience centre in the first quarter of 2013 which will help customers visualise what they need and conceptualise what they want from the advanced technologies showcased at the centre.

The experience centre will comprise five sections – the living room, the dining room, the kitchen, the private cinema, and the bedroom.

The different sections represent different market segments, including HDB/condominium living rooms and kitchens; luxury private cinemas; hotels and service apartments; as well as restaurants and boardrooms.

Here’s a selection of interesting tech events happening this week (11-17 November 2012). It is not an exhaustive list and represents only a sampling of events that gives a taste of the tech pulse in Singapore.

What are some of the more interesting tech events happening in Singapore this week?

What are some of the more interesting tech events happening in Singapore this week?

This is a really quiet week in the region, partly due to a public holiday (Deepavali) in Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia.

ASUS is launching the PadFone 2 smartphone with tablet dock 2-in-1 device, while Sennheiser is partying in Zouk come end of the week.

Otherwise all’s quiet, before the madness of SITEX 2012 rolls into town next week.

Below is the event listing for the week.

Datasat’s RS20i Digital Audio Processor launched in Singapore

Tuesday, November 6th, 2012

Clarity AV has launched the RS20i, Datasat’s newest entry into Singapore’s luxury home cinema market, offering to bridge the gap with the professional cinema sphere. Available from today for S$32,250.

Clarity has just launched the Datasat RS20i Digital Audio Processor in Singapore.

The RS20i is engineered according to the same architecture as Datasat’s AP20 professional processor, the ‘brains’ that processed audio content for James Bond’s Skyfall, Men in Black 3, Jurassic Park and more than 14,000 other Hollywood blockbusters.

Unlike currently available surround sound boxes and premium processors, the RS20i conforms to the full 16-channel Digital Cinema Package (the collection of files that complete a digital movie) specification mandated by the Digital Cinema Initiatives (DCI).

With 16 channels of digital audio available, the RS20i supports up to 85 digital and analog inputs as well as 34 audio outputs.

This amount of outputs allows the audio processor to accommodate all surround sound formats currently available – including true 3D sound.

In addition, three expansion slots allow for the easy addition of extra channels in the future.

The RS20i also allows audiophiles to fine tune audio exactly how they want and save the setting.

Once configured, it is easy to manage the setting with all the power of the RS20i available at the users’ fingertips through their smartphone, tablet or laptop.

The RS20i is the only home cinema solution to feature the market-leading Dirac Live room optimization technology.

Atlas Sound & Vision brings Swiss Piega handmade speakers to Singapore

Friday, October 19th, 2012

Atlas has partnered with Piega to sell the Swiss handmade speakers in Singapore. The premium, precision-crafted speakers range from the entry-level TMicro 3 speakers (S$748) to the top-of-the-range MasterOne loudspeakers (S$54,648). Prices include GST.

Piega's most affordable speakers in Singapore- TMicro 3 (S$748).

Piega’s most affordable speakers in Singapore- TMicro 3 (S$748).

Made from 100% aluminium, these speakers are extruded from a 3 ton aluminium block in one production step pressed with a 7,500 tonne press machine, one of the largest in Europe.

Piega's top-of-the-range loudspeakers - MasterOne - can be had for S$54,648.

Piega’s top-of-the-range loudspeakers – MasterOne – can be had for S$54,648.

The process results in an acoustically perfect housing featuring very high cabinet stiffness due to optimised damping in relation to enclosure thickness.

Piega’s audio research team developed its own linear drive ribbon (LDR) ribbon tweeter – a 0.02mm aluminium ribbon foil that Piega claims surpasses all conventional dome tweeters.

With only 0.007 grams of moving mass, the aluminium riboon foil boasts an impressive frequency range of up to 50’00 Hz and 98 dB efficiency.

The linear impulse and frequency from these tweeters also results in high audio efficiency with little distortion and a clean decay spectrum, presenting robust and extremely clear audio.

Piega also introduced the coaxial ribbon system in 2000, enhancing the quality of its speakers to present an electrostatic-like performance coupled with a sleek, aesthetic design.

By having the membrane of the tweeter surrounded by the membrane of the midrange, both membranes are on the same plane in all three axes and have the same point as the acoustic centre.

Operating as a single point sound source, the virtually perfect pulse response fits perfectly with the advantages from the LDR ribbon tweeter.

This produces extreme audio clarity to deliver an exciting musical experience, with a natural, life-like sound that stirs the emotions for its audience.

I had a listen-in at the Winstedt showroom to both the TMicro 3 and the MasterOne. The showroom was deliberately NOT soundproofed so that customers could get a realistic idea of how the music will sound in their own homes.

The quality of music was indeed superb.

Piega from Lake Zurich

Founded in 1986 in Horgen on Lake Zurich in Switzerland, Piega has been handcrafting its loudspeakers in aluminium for over 25 years.

The speakers cater to audiophiles around the world and are known for their timeless elegance – inspired in the design studio of Hanns Wettstein and boasting extreme audio clarity with its unique coaxial ribbon system.

Since 1986, over 80,412 speakers have been handmade by 20 craftsmen working at the Piega facility on the shores of Lake Zurich.

The full-frame sensor’s resolving power is enhanced by a newly developed separate multi-segment optical low-pass filter.

Bionic BIONZ

Assisted by an all-new front-end LSI, the BIONZ engine processes massive amounts of image signal data from the Exmor CMOS Sensor at very high speeds.

Together with a powerful new area-specific noise reduction (NR) algorithm, this achieves a 14-bit RAW output, rich gradation and low noise.

Saturation signal volume has been increased more than twofold. With its expanded receptor surface, its sensitivity is now 1.5 times more, while the random noise is cut by half compared to A900.

The expanded ISO range of 50-25,600 (equivalent to nine stops), is provided by the BIONZ image processor.

With a burst mode of up to 6 frames per second (fps) at full resolution, the A99 can shoot 10 fps in Tele-zoom high speed shooting mode.

Maintaining the focus

The 19-point AF system with 11 cross sensors is complemented by a multi-point focal plane phase-detection AF sensor. With 102 AF points, this additional AF sensor overlays the main image sensor.

This Dual AF System, unique to Translucent Mirror Technology, permits ultra-fast, accurate autofocusing that maintains tracking focus even if the subject leaves the 19-point AF frame.

The A99 also debuts a new AF-D continuous autofocus mode for moving subjects, coping effortlessly with subjects traversing the focal plane.

As a further focusing refinement, a new AF range control function allows users to set the distance range recognised by the AF system.

This smart feature significantly aids operability if you’re focusing on distant sports action through a nearby wire mesh fence.

Movie making

The A99 offers full-frame Full HD 50p/25p progressive video recording to meet AVCHD Version 2.0 specifications.

The optional XLR-K1M adaptor kit adds a high-quality mono shotgun mic and pro-standard XLR connections for dependable audio acquisition.
