Exactly one year from the launch of Desktop 10, Parallels has released the new Desktop 11 which promises up to 50 percent performance improvements and makes Microsoft’s Cortana available to Mac users in OS X.

In addition to the consumer and business edition, Desktop 11 has a new Pro Edition that gives developers, designers and power users more tools and resources to be productive on a Mac.

The Pro Edition has all the features of the Business Edition except for the centralised administration and management (including single key) feature for mass deployment and mass management of Parallels Desktop and Windows VMs for employees.

Also new is a new subscription based licensing scheme for the Business Edition and Pro Edition, while the standard consumer edition remains on a perpetual license scheme.

Apple unveils iPad Air 2 & iPad mini 3 and other new products

Following last month’s big launch of the iPhone 6, Tim Cook has just introduced the new iPad Air 2, iPad mini 3 ahead of the holiday shopping season.

Apple also unveiled a new 27-inch iMac with Retina 5K display (from S$3,388), updated the Mac mini and made OS X Yosemite available today as a free upgrade.

The new iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3 are available in three metallic finishes: gold, silver and space grey.

This is the second big launch for Apple close on the heels of the iPhone 6 launch last month.

The iPad Air 2 is only 6.1mm thin and weighs less than 450g, featuring improved Retina display for enhanced contrast and richer, more vibrant colours, and better cameras for taking stunning photos and videos.

The new iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3 offer Touch ID so users can unlock their iPad with the touch of a finger.

This is Tim Cook’s second Apple WWDC at the helm of Apple, with a slew of announcements after a dearth of new products.

The annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) this year is being held from June 10 – 14 at San Francisco’s Moscone West.

Tickets went on sale on 26 April earlier this year – with each ticket going for US$1,599.

TODAY! Mountain Lion available from Mac App Store

The ninth major release of Apple’s desktop operating system is now available as a download from the Mac App Store. Mountain Lion is available as an upgrade from Lion or Snow Leopard for S$25.98.

Mountain Lion features more than 200 new features, including iCloud integration, the all new Messages app, Notification Center, system-wide Sharing, Facebook integration, Dictation, AirPlay Mirroring and Game Center.

Pricing & Availability

OS X Mountain Lion is available from the Mac App Store for S$25.98.

Mountain Lion requires Lion or Snow Leopard (OS X v10.6.8 or later), 2GB of memory and 8GB of available space.

OS X Server requires Mountain Lion and is available from the Mac App Store for S$25.98.

The OS X Mountain Lion Up-to-Date upgrade is available at no additional charge from the Mac App Store to all customers who purchased a qualifying new Mac system from Apple or an Apple Authorised Reseller on or after 11 June, 2012.

Below are some of these key new features.

  • iCloud integration, for easy set up of your Mail, Contacts, Calendar, Messages, Reminders and Notes, and keeping everything, including iWork documents, up to date across all your devices.
  • The new Messages app, which replaces iChat and brings iMessage to the Mac, so you can send messages to anyone with an iPhone, iPad, iPod touch or another Mac.

  • Game Center, which brings the popular social gaming network from iOS to the Mac so you can enjoy live, multiplayer games with friends whether they’re on a Mac, iPhone, iPad or iPod touch.
  • The new Gatekeeper, which makes downloading software from the Internet safer.
  • Power Nap, which automatically updates your apps and system while your Mac is asleep.
  • A faster Safari browser.
