Photo of the Day: Discovered this brood of four kittens over the weekend, kept by this group of retirees in an HDB void deck. I’ll be sharing snapshots I took over the next few POTD postings.

Not quite as cute as the Puss in Boots in Shrek, but what beady eyes. Just enjoying the sharpness and shallow depth of field of the lens. Photo taken with a Nikon D7100 with AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/4G ED VR lens. Photo credit: John Tan.
Apart from the four kittens, the place was also a haunt for grown-up cats in the neighbourhood.

More than 2,500 F1 fans joined S. Iswaran, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office and Second Minister for Trade and Industry in the Pit Lane Walk at the Marina Bay Street Circuit.

Some 2,500 F1 fans thronged the pit lanes at the Marina Bay Street Circuit. Every which way I looked, there was somebody taking a selfie. Photo taken with a Samsung NX2000 mirrorless interchangeable lens camera with a 20-50mm lens. Photo credit: John Tan.
For the first time in the six short years of Singapore Grand Prix history, members of the public were invited onto the Marina Bay Street Circuit a day before the Circuit Park’s official opening.

Photo of the Day: You know those burner barrels that taoists and the Chinese use in housing estates to burn incense papers when they pray?
How do these barrels mysteriously appear at the beginning of the hungry ghost festival (or other major pray dates) and then disappear at the end?

Mystery solved! I was having dinner in the evening when I spotted these two workers rounding up these burner barrels. I had the D5200 with me so I snatched a quick snapshot as they went by into the dusk. Photo taken with a Nikon D5200 with NIKKOR 18-55mm kit lens. Photo credit: John Tan.
These burning barrels were refurbished from oil barrels and are offered to offer a less messy alternative to burning incense paper in the open – where the ashes fly and spread everywhere when the wind blows.

Workshops and the two seminars at the 2-day (24-25 August) event at the refurbished Suntec City Convention Centre were sold out, as participation in this year’s event was almost twice that of the inaugural I AM NIKON DAY event last year.
* All photos in this post are from Nikon Singapore.

Participants as well as visitors passing by had fun at the Nikon Day Photo Wall, taking photo souvenirs or visiting various Nikon camera display booths showcasing the latest Nikon COOLPIX cameras and Nikon 1 series.
In line with Nikon’s slogan of “At the Heart of the Image”, the aim of the 2-day event was to enrich the public with greater photography knowledge and tips, for both beginner photographers as well as seasoned amateurs.

Shutterbugs also tried their hand at capturing shots of models in the DSLR display area which featured a central boxing ring with models posing through the day.

We took a boat to Kusu Island on the National Day holiday for a family picnic.

Splashing along the way to Kusu Island on a sunny morning (back in March). Photo taken with an Olympus E-450 with Zuiko Digital 40-150mm f/4-5.6 kit lens. Photo credit: John Tan.
We’d visited Kusu Island back in March on a weekday and found the island almost totally deserted, except for a few people manning the Chinese temple on the island, and a few fellow visitors that came on the same boat.
