Sony Xperia S - avail now at S$898 without contract.
The Xperia S was first unveiled during CES 2012 as the first smartphone in the new Xperia NXT series after Sony bought over Ericsson’s 50% stake in the former Sony-Ericsson joint venture.
The slew of Xperia smartphones will be able to share content with other electronics devices from Sony – such as tablets, notebooks and smart TVs.
Sony is hoping the ability to leverage Sony’s extensive range of IT and lifestyle devices will be a selling point to attract consumers to the Xperia smartphones sold by the wholly owned Sony Mobile Communications (former Sony Ericsson).
Here are the key characteristic of each model:
- Xperia S offers a HD experience boasting a brilliant screen for superior viewing.
- Xperia P delivers outstanding screen brightness using Sony “WhiteMagic” display technology.
- Xperia U packs powerful Sony entertainment in a stylish and compact design.
- Xperia sola allows easy access to apps and quick launch of actions with NFC and Xperia SmartTags.

Sony Xperia P - brighter display with "WhiteMagic".
All the Xperia NXT smartphones are designed with an interesting “transparent element” encircling the base of the phone which illuminates when receiving calls, texts and notifications.
The colour of the element is based on whatever is displayed on the screen so that the entire colour scheme is always in harmony.
Paul Mah, a friend who blogs with CIO.com initially thought the colour was based on the mood of the caller. Now that would be something innovative! Stay away when the phone is glowing red.
A new album, video player and music player will deliver compelling entertainment experiences and the new UI design also allows consumers to access their favourite application direct from the lock-screen.
Xperia SmartTags – Switch your smartphone settings with a single Swipe

Sony Xperia sola
The Xperia S, Xperia P and the Xperia sola are NFC enabled.
The Xperia S and Xperia P and come with two NFC Xperia SmartTags in the box, while the Xperia sola comes with four.
Simply swipe the phones on a SmartTag and the pre-configured profile will be launched automatically.
These profiles can be easily personalised to reflect any taste, designed to save consumers’ time and make their lives easier.

Come 2012, the game that you play on your Sony Playstation could be made-in-Singapore. That is the vision for the Memorandum of Understanding signed today between Nanyang Polytechnic and Sony Computer Entertainment Asia.
The 5-year Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) will renew the partnership between Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP) and Sony Computer Entertainment Asia (SCE Asia) a year ahead of the existing agreement signed in December 2009.

Mr. Tetsuhiko Yasuda, President, Sony Computer Entertainment Asia and Mr. Chan Lee Mun, Principal & CEO, Nanyang Polytechnic at the MOU signing ceremony.
Both parties will be nurturing the first ever student-initiated Sony PlayStation Minis game, developed by 21-year-old NYP graduand Hoong Boon Wai. They will also continue their partnership in the NYP Games Resource Centre, the only Sony PlayStation games development and training centre in Southeast Asia.

Mr Hoong Boon Wai (right), Nanyang Polytechnic graduate and Founder of Dark Potato Studios, demonstrating his game to Mr. Tetsuhiko Yasuda.
The S$4 million Games Resource Centre will provide the resources and facilities for lecturers of NYP’s Diploma in Digital Entertainment Technology (Games) and Diploma in Digital Media Design (Games) to guide and mentor students from these courses. By 2015, NYP expects to train at least another 800 students and games development professionals through its two diploma programmes and Specialist Diploma Games Development.
Companies such as Red Hare Studios can also use the development tools in the centre for games development. Dr Koh Wee Lit from Red Hare Studios has developed a game – Spell Caster – in the centre that is planned for release in 2012.
Hoong’s 2D arcade shooter game, called PhaseShift, may also be launched in 2012 by his startup – Dark Potatoes Studios.
Two other local startups setting up taking advantage of the partnership include SBA Mobile Solutions and Gamma Games.

Parts shortages has severely disrupted the supply chain in Japan and for major IT manufacturers around the world. The magnitude-9 earthquake, followed by the Tsunami and accident at the nuclear plant, has led to closures of factories around Japan.
Bloomberg reports that Sony has shut five more plants while Toyota Motor has extended production halts, 11 days after the worst earthquake in Japan on record.
Sony is Japan’s biggest exporter of consumer electronics. The five plants in the central and southern regions will stop work until March 31.It said that the plants produce LCD TVs, broadcasting equipment, headphones, camcorders, cameras, and mobile phones. Sony now has 12 plants where operations have been halted. The factories halted earlier manufacture products like Blu-ray discs and semiconductor lasers. It said that some production may be shifted overseas if the parts and materials shortage continue.

Toyota is the world’s biggest carmaker. All of its domestic car assembly will halt until March 26. It has lost production of 140,000 thousand vehicles, because of the shortage of electronic parts, plastics and rubber, the spokeswoman for Toyota said.
Honda has also extended the closure of three of its plants until at least March 27.
Canon has closed a factory in Nagasaki, some 680 miles from Fukushima until tomorrow, citing component shortage. It is the largest camera maker in the world.
Toshiba said that a factory makig small LCD panels may remain closed for a month. It has shut two plants so far.

Other manufacturers whose plants have been halted include Fujitsu, Panasonic, Hitachi, Hino Motors, Isuzu Motors, Mitsubishi Motors, Japan Tobacco and Kikkoman. None of them have decided when they will resume full production at the factories affected by the disaster.
Reopening of factories
On a brighter note, some factories that have been halted earlier due to the disaster are being reopened.
Nissan Motor, Japan’s second-largest carmaker said that operations at six factories are restarting while some vehicle assembly will also resume.
Canon resumed partial production at three factories in northern Japan, while Denso said that all of its plants has partially resumed. It is Japan’s largest auto-parts maker.
Sony has also restarted partial operations at a battery factory in Tochigi prefecture. It is the company’s third to resume production after the disasters.

Sony wants to increase its market share from 11% of global SLR camera sales in 2009, to at least 15% market share by March 2011.

Sony may control about 15 percent of the global market for single-lens-reflex cameras by the end of March, Masashi Imamura, president of the Personal Imaging & Sound Business Group told Bloomberg in an interview in Tokyo yesterday.
Interchangeable lens cameras is the fastest growing segment of digital imaging devices last year. Sales of SLR cameras increased 30% in the past year, more than twice the 13% growth by compact cameras, according to the Camera & Imaging Products Association, a Tokyo-based industry group.
In a report from research company IDC in April last year, leading the race was Canon which sold 45% of the world’s SLR cameras, followed by Nikon which sold 34%. Sony was in third place, accounting for 11% of the 9.77 million units sold in 2009. In the previous four years that it has been in the segment, Sony has garnered about 10% of the market share.
It bought the high-end camera business of Konica Minolta Holdings in 2006 when Konica ended its 130-year-old camera business to focus on printers.
Sony, which also manufactures the Cyber-shot compact cameras, has been aggressively introducing new models in its pursuit to grab market share from the two leaders.
The maker of alpha-series DSLR cameras introduced its NEX cameras (NEX-3 and NEX-5) in June 2010. These cameras feature the large sensors of traditional DSLRs, do away with the use of the reflex mirror and optical viewfinder, while allowing the camera lens to be changeable.
Like the Micro Four Thirds mirrorless cameras from Olympus and Panasonic, the NEX cameras offer the image quality of traditional DSLRs, the flexibility of using different lens for different shooting situations, yet enjoy a reduced bulk.
Sony also launched a slew of new models in its existing Alpha line in September. These include the SLT A55 and A33, which replace the traditional reflex mirror between the lens and the sensor with a stationary translucent mirror. This also makes the camera smaller and improves the auto-focus performance of the camera.
