Jay Chou transformed his passion and devotion for music into innovative notebook design by using music notes, sheet music, piano concepts and other musical icons as inspiration for a truly unique notebook. The combination of modern “J-style” text-wrapping with a classical Chinese blue and white porcelain finish infuses the notebook with strong and diverse Asian aesthetics.

“It has been a tremendous pleasure to work with the ASUS Design Center.  They were able to translate and transform my musical inspirations onto the N series notebook product design and functionality.  Every detail on the N series perfectly portrays my personal taste and multimedia lifestyle,” said Jay Chou.

Computex Taipei 2011 draws tablet watchers and stake holders

Monday, May 30th, 2011

The 5-day annual trade show in Taipei will see more tablet models based on Google’s Android and a preview of Microsoft’s next Windows platform for tablets – one year after Apple’s game changing iPads grab the lion’s share of the tablet market.

COMPUTEX Taipei, or Taipei International Information Technology Show (台北國際電腦展), will be held from May 31 to June 4, 2011 in Taipei. Taiwan based Acer and Asustek had first showed off their low-cost but trend-setting netbooks at the Computex in 2007 and 2008.

Investors and analysts will be watching to see if new Android based tablets can challenge Apple’s iPad. Non-iPad tablet competitors are expected to halve Apple’s 100 percent dominance of the tablet market to 50 percent next year, iSuppli predicted on April 21. The iPad had cordoned off the entire tablet market when it was first launched in June last year because of the absence of competitors.

Computex Taipei 2011 from May 31 to June 4, 2011

Computex Taipei 2011 from May 31 to June 4, 2011.

Both Google and Microsoft will send executives to the event to brief the media on their plans. Intel, the world’s largest chipmaker, and ARM, whose chip designs are licensed by Qualcomm and Nvidia to power tablets, will also be vying for tablet manufacturers to select their chips.

Global shipments of tablets will increase almost twelve times to 215 million units in 2015 from 17 million last year, Toni Sacconaghi, a New York-based analyst at Sanford C. Bernstein & Co., wrote in a May 26 report.

Computer sales growth will be reduced by 2 percent annually between 2010 and 2015, Sacconaghi wrote, because fifteen percent of all tablets will cannibalize the sale of consumer PCs.

Bloomberg reports that Microsoft will “preview its operating system designed for tablets this week, using hardware with ARM-based chips”. The current Windows 7 operating system from Microsoft is not compatible with the ARM chips used in tablets from manufacturers such as Samsung and Motorola.

Apple updates MacBook Pro line of notebooks

Friday, February 25th, 2011
Ten months after its last revamp in Apr 2010, Apple updates its premium line of notebooks with groundbreaking Thunderbolt technology and more powerful graphics engine, and doubles processor speed across the board.

Apple's revamped MacBook Pro family of products

MacBook Pro is the first computer on the market to implement the new Thunderbolt I/O technology which promises blistering data transfer speeds of up to 10 Gbits/s with high performance external devices. This is 20 times faster than the ubiquitous USB2.0.

Ports for the MacBook Pro notebook

Note the single Thunderbolt port (fourth from the left) labeled with the symbol of the lightning bolt.

Developed by Intel with collaboration from Apple, and previously code-named “Light Peak”, Thunderbolt allows multiple devices to be daisy-chained together, without bandwidth and power attenuation concerns.

This enhances the expandability of the notebooks as the daisy-chained devices can be connected to the single Thunderbolt port, without having to build multiple USB ports on the notebook, where space comes at a premium.

A FaceTime HD camera is now built into the MacBook Pro.

The 13-in MacBook Pro comes standard with a dual-core i5 processor and Intel’s integrated graphics chipset

The larger 15- and 17-in models runs on a quad-core i7 and comes with AMD’s Radeon HD 6490M or 6750M discrete graphics. Apple claims that these were three times faster than the Nvidia graphics chips in the older models.

It also claims that all MacBook Pros are “up to twice as fast as their predecessors.”

Pricing & Availability for Singapore

The new 13-inch MacBook Pro, 15-inch MacBook Pro and 17-inch MacBook Pro will be available in the week of March 6 through the Apple Store and Apple Authorized Resellers.

Front view of the MacBook ProThe 13-inch MacBook Pro is available in two configurations: one with a 2.3 GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i5 and 320GB hard drive starting at S$1,648 ; and one with a 2.7 GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i5 and 500GB hard drive starting at S$2,048.

The new 15-inch MacBook Pro is available in two models: one with a 2.0 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7, AMD Radeon HD 6490M and 500GB hard drive starting at S$2,488 and one with a 2.2 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7, AMD Radeon HD 6750M and 750GB hard drive starting at S$2,988.

The new 17-inch MacBook Pro features a 2.2 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7, AMD Radeon HD 6750M and 750GB hard drive and is priced at S$3,398.

Configure-to-order options include faster quad-core processors up to 2.3 GHz, additional hard drive capacity up to 750GB, solid state storage up to 512GB, more memory up to 8GB DDR3, antiglare and high-resolution display options and AppleCare® Protection Plan. Additional technical specifications and configure-to-order options and accessories are available online at its website.

Intel buys McAfee for US$7.68 billion

Friday, August 20th, 2010

Software security built right in the computer chip hardware. That could be the next trend in the fight against attackers on the Internet. Shares of other computer security houses like Symantec are also gaining in the anticipation that other big technology companies could make a similar move for those companies.

Logos of Intel and McAfee

Intel buys McAfee for US$7.68 billion.

In the largest technology deal this year so far, Intel will fork out US$7.68 billion for antivirus and computer security software maker McAfee. Intel has said that the acquisition could allow it to build McAfee’s anit-virus technology directly into its chips, helping to protect computers, wireless devices and embedded systems in vehicles and ATMs from online crime.

As a sign of how keen Intel is over McAfee, it is paying a higher-than-average premium for McAfee. The US$48 for each McAfee share is a 60% premium over McAfee’s US$29.93 close on Wednesday. Data from Bloomberg show that in the last five years there have been 171 acquisitions in the Internet security business, with an average premium of only 22.3 percent.

To address worries that Intel will mismanage their new acquisition into oblivion, Intel said that McAfee would “operate as a wholly owned subsidiary”. There will be no job cuts from the 61,000 employees in McAfee which, like Intel, is also based in Santa Clara, California.

Intel’s foray into computer security will hopefully help it expand beyond the PC market, which is increasingly overshadowed by growths in the smartphone and tablet markets. Although Intel’s chips run more than 80 percent of personal computers, they are absent from mobile phones now on the market.
