Virtual Visit to Huawei Health Lab in Dongguan, China

The new Huawei Health Lab in Songshan Lake in Dongguan, China is the third and largest so far and was officially unveiled on 22 October, 2021, during the first day of the Huawei Developer Conference. I was invited to visit (virtually) the facility as part of the showcase to select media from APAC.

In its efforts to lead the industry with continuous technological innovation, Huawei opened its first Health Lab in Shenzhen in 2016.

The 700 sqm facility focussed on research on testing and technology of sports and health products.

The next Health Lab was built in Xi’an in 2020.

The bigger 1,100 sqm facility explored the innovation and application of sports and health technologies, to help more people to work out scientifically and live a healthy life.

The latest Health Lab in Songshan Lake, Dongguan, is by far the largest – at 4,380 sqm.

Visit to Dreamcore’s 10,000 sqft Experiential Dream Centre

In celebration of its fifth anniversary, Singapore custom PC company Dreamcore today previewed its brand new Dream Centre – a hub for the company’s growing operations.

The new Dream Centre houses Dreamcore’s expanded office and production capacity, retail and service experience, an eSports training room and more.

The 10,000 square-feet space houses the expanded Dreamcore office, retail, concierge and service zones and a state-of-the-art PC assembly and testing facility, designed to help advance Dreamcore’s two key priorities – custom craft builds and a guided customer experience.

“People may have a certain perception of custom builds – and the challenge is helping them overcome certain barriers around the perceived complexity and hassle of it. It can be a smooth and informed process and that’s what we serve to deliver,” said Shaun Tan, founder and CEO of Dreamcore.

The Dream Centre provides an open, flexible environment that facilitates a range of experiences including product and brand showcases, activations, workshops, live events and competitions.

REACT is Medical Winner of 2021 James Dyson Award

REACT, the Medical Winner for the 2021 James Dyson Award, is a device to stem bleeding to help save the lives of stabbing victims. It was invented by Joseph Bentley from Loughborough university.

 The REACT system uses a rapid, inflatable Tamponade device that is inserted into the stab wound. The automated inflation of this Tamponade provides internal pressure direct to the bleeding site, controlling bleeding faster than current methods.

Knife crime is an issue in many countries around the world.

In England and Wales alone, there were around 46,000 offences involving a knife or sharp instrument, which is the highest number of offences since the year ending March 2011.

The Problem

The average wait time for an ambulance in the UK is currently just over eight minutes, yet it can only take five minutes for someone to bleed to death.

The Solution

The REACT device (which stands for Rapid Emergency Actuating Tamponade) aims to reduce catastrophic blood loss from a knife wound.

Plastic Scanner is Sustainability Winner of James Dyson Award

The Sustainability prize for the 2021 James Dyson Award is Plastic Scanner – a low-cost, handheld device to identify plastic for recycling. It was invented by Jerry de Vos from TU Delft.

HOPES is Singapore’s 1st International Winner of James Dyson Award

HOPES is the first entry from Singapore to win the international top prize in the 17 years’ history of the James Dyson Award.

This year’s International winner of the James Dyson Award was inspired by one of the inventors’, Kelu, father’s diagnosis of glaucoma.

After witnessing his discomfort and multiple hospital visits, she realised there is a global need for a less invasive and more accessible method for Intraocular Pressure (IOP) monitoring.

Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness worldwide.

Winners of James Dyson Award Announced with International Winner from Singapore

The James Dyson Foundation has announced the winners of its James Dyson Award. This is the first time that an entry from Singapore has become the International Winner.

This is the first time in the competition’s 17 years’ history that the International Winner is from Singapore. HOPES from Singapore has bagged the international top prize.

The James Dyson Award, organised by Dyson’s Charity – the James Dyson Foundation, aims to nurture and inspire a new generation of design engineers and inventors.

The brief is simple – design something that solves a problem.

While the award provides its winners with prize monies that help support the further development of their inventions, it importantly provides them a global platform to share their inventions with the world.

The James Dyson Award has now given nearly £1m in prize money to over 250 promising inventions from young engineers and scientists in 28 countries around the world.

In 2021, the Award received a record number of entries worldwide and Sir James Dyson chose three global winners for the first time, each receiving £30,000 in prize money to support the next stages of their inventions.

Event Forecast: Huawei China Dongguan Health Lab Media Visit

Huawei will be opening the “doors” of its Health Lab in Dongguan to media from APAC for a virtual tour on 25 November, 2021. The 4,680 sqm facility is Huawei’s largest Health Lab in China.

The latest HUAWEI Health Lab in Songshan Lake, Dongguan, China aims to become a world class health and fitness technology institute dedicated to product R&D, standards R&D, certification, exhibitions, and industry incubation activities.

The virtual Center of Excellence will promote smarter and more sustainable urban vegetable farming in Singapore and Asia.

The Center of Excellence will act as a one-stop knowledge and expertise resource supporting farmers to move towards sustainable food production,” said Rami Hajjar, Cluster Leader for South-East Asia, Signify.

Signify is committed to bringing more than 80 years of experience in horticulture lighting and our spectrum of science-based lighting solutions to help growers in Asia navigate challenges in indoor farming. The Center of Excellence will act as a one-stop knowledge and expertise resource supporting farmers to move towards sustainable food production,” said Rami Hajjar, Cluster Leader for South-East Asia, Signify.

The center will provide research insights and advanced lighting solutions for growers in Singapore and the region that will help Singapore and Asia produce local, pesticide-free vegetables grown in a sustainable way.

The center is Signify’s first virtual horticultural knowledge-based research center.

It aims to enable urban growers to access knowledge residing with Signify’s teams and specialists, expertise in its proven growth recipes and its portfolio of products and services.

Research insights gathered by Signify’s physical research hubs, the GrowWise Center in Eindhoven and BrightBox in Venlo, since 2015 will also be made available over this virtual center.
