Seven tips for laptop batteries

Saturday, March 31st, 2012

How do you maximise your battery life? Should you constantly charge your battery? Should you keep your battery installed even when your laptop is plugged in? When should you replace your battery?

Check out Lenovo's Guide to Laptop Batteries.

Check out Lenovo's Guide to Laptop Batteries.

Here are the answers to these and other frequently asked questions, courtesy of “Lenovo’s Guide to Laptop Batteries”.

1. Maximise your battery life

  • Dim the display when not connected to an AC supply
  • Disable Bluetooth and Wi-Fi when not in use
  • Disconnect unnecessary external devices such as USB flash drives

2. Keep your battery installed even when your laptop is plugged into a power source.

3. Do not constantly charge your battery. Reduce the maximum charge threshold if you connect your laptop to an AC supply most of the time.

4. When storing your extra battery, ensure there is at least 50% charge level, and store in a cool environment.

5. Keep your battery cool when in use to slow degradation.

6. Modern Li-ion batteries do not need to be fully charged and discharged because they do not suffer from memory effects.

7. A little obvious here – replace the battery when it can no longer hold a full charge, or when its actual run time falls significantly below its original run time.

The four-day CES 2012 (10-13 January 2012) is being held in Nevada, Las Vegas. A flurry of pre-show conferences and announcements gave a hint of what is to come this year. Here’s a quick round-up of televisions – a dynamic gadget frontier this year.

They will come smarter, bigger but thinner.

LG's stunning 55" OLED EM9600 measures only 4mm thick, thinner than a smartphone.

The most impressive offerings come from LG. It has unveiled its 55″ EM9600 measuring just 4mm thick – that’s thinner than a smartphone.

The organic light-emitting diode (OLED) system offers a ‘refresh-rate’ that is 1,000 times faster than most current sets – this means that moving images will appear much smoother.

The TV weights only 7.5kg.

LG will also be launching an 84” TV with ultra definition, as well as voice control remote controls, and a 3D gesture-control interface like that of Microsoft’s Xbox Kinect.

Samsung is pushing its 55" Super OLED TV, the ES 8000.

Thematic shopping with Digital Style

Friday, September 16th, 2011

Newstead Technologies has opened a new multi-brand IT concept store in Funan DigitaLife Mall today. “Digital Style” is organised into six thematic zones, based on the needs of the modern IT consumer.

This is in keeping with the times – since consumers today have different purchasing habits and approaches.
This is the first of a chain of such stores. Eventually, there will likely be four to five such stores geographically distributed around Singapore, according to Evelyn Chua, Business Development and Marketing Manager of Newstead Technologies.
The 2,647 square feet store is located at #03-32 of the mall and opens from 11 am to 8 pm from Tuesdays to Sundays, and 11 am to 7 pm on Mondays.

The six themes are Entertainment & Media, Gaming, Home Computing, Mobile Communications, Office & Professional, and Ultra Mobile & Business.

The focus is on allowing shoppers to try out, for themselves, different products in the themes they are interested in.

For instance, in the gaming kiosk, the whole spectrum of gaming related gadgets and peripherals – from consoles, laptops, speakers and controllers – are displayed, for shoppers to mix-and-match and plug-and-play the various components together at one-stop.

The store is organised into six themes.Across the various themes, products are featured from all the major brands, including Acer, Asus, BlackBerry, Dell, Fujitsu, HP, HTC, Lenovo, Logitech, Microsoft, Motorola, Panasonic, Samsung, Toshiba and others.

Apple related products are absent, so you’ll have to visit authorised Apple resellers, such as Nubox, which is also under Newstead Technologies.

I noticed that digital cameras and video cameras are not sold at the shop.

Update (24 February, 2012): Newstead Technologies has opened its second and bigger Digital Style store in Jurong Point. The next will be at The Star Vista towards the end of 2012.

Hewlett-Packard, Dell and Lenovo, the world’s three biggest makers of PCs, are introducing new tablets as the popularity of Apple’s iPad eats into demand for desktop and notebook computers.

Gartner reports that global PC shipments rose 2.3 percent in the three months ended June – much less than the 6.7 percent increase predicted by the research house.

Although the two tablets uses the Android operating system from Google, Lenovo plans to launch a new tablet- the IdeaPad Tablet K1 – in the fourth quarter based on the Windows 7 operating system from Microsoft.
