One of the things I love about Hari Raya is eating the delicious cookies that Muslim friends and colleagues share when the festival approaches. They are tasty and make delectable snacks suitable for all occasions.

Rows and rows of Hari Raya cookies on sale at the Ramadan Night Bazaar. Both photos taken with a Nikon D600 with AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR lens. Photo credit: John Tan.
You can also buy them at shops and the Ramadan Night Bazaar.
If you’re a baker or feeling adventurous, you could also try baking some yourself!

Apart from selling food for breaking of fast, the Ramadan Night Bazaar also sells plenty of interesting and beautiful stuff to help Muslims prepare for Hari Raya Puasa at the end of the fasting month.

Once the fasting month of Ramadan ends, the first day of the next month (Shawwal) is celebrated as Eid al-Fitr – the Arabic term meaning “festival of breaking of the fast”.
“除了卖开斋食品以外,回教斋月夜市也摆卖许多其他物品,譬如新衣,新鞋以及装饰品等。斋月过后,就是庆祝开斋节的时候了。大家都得穿上颜色鲜艳抢眼的新衣拜访亲戚朋友。” – 科技点心(微薄)
The day is known as Hari Raya Puasa in Singapore, Malaysia and Brunei; and is also known as Hari Raya Aidilfitri or Hari Raya Idul Fitri.
Hari Raya means “celebration day” in Malay.

Since this is the month of Ramadan, I will be featuring photos that I took during a visit to a night Bazaar in Geylang Serai in Singapore.

After sunset, Muslims who fasted all day file into the night bazaar, while food stall holders dish out freshly cooked food. The Arabic term for the evening breakfast is Iftar, while in Malaysia and Indonesia, the breaking of fast is termed “berbuka puasa” and “buka puasa” respectively.
This is the first in a series of photos that I will be posting on the Ramadan Bazaar.
The night markets bristle with activity especially around the Islamic month of Ramadan, which culminates with the Hari Raya Puasa.

The PhotoNote app digitses analog material into an online photo notebook – for more efficient management and more effective communications.

New freemium app from Fuji Xerox: PhotoNote – an online photo notebook.
SkyDesk PhotoNote captures and stores analog content into digital form for more efficient storage and access and enables these content to be easily shared with co-workers, partners or customers for more effective communications.
Hand-written-character recognition
PhotoNote’s digitisation uses Fuji Xerox’s proprietary character-recognition technology for Optical Character Recognition (OCR) that includes recognition of hand-written characters.
The technology mimics a human’s visual information processing and this is the first time such technology is used on commercialised software.
Currently, only English and Japanese are supported.
Most of the features are free, with additional storage and Excel conversion feature available as paid options (prices within).
The app works with iOS and Android and is available in Singapore, Australia and Japan.
PhotoNote digitises physical memos or meeting notes jotted down during business discussions and stores them in the cloud – enabling easy access by the user and quick sharing of the information with others.
To digitise printed material, forms, handwritten memos and whiteboards, simply snap a photo using a smartphone or digital camera and upload the photo onto SkyDesk on the cloud.
The PhotoNote app automatically conducts image processing and OCR conversion, storing the image together with tags and additional text annotations, as well as text data from the conversion.
Easy search can be done on the database of PhotoNote records based on recorded time/date, tags, and the converted text.

If you’re a photography enthusiast looking for lab-quality prints at home, as well as copy, scan and fax capabilities for your home office, check out this duplex A4 inkjet printer that comes with wireless connectivity.
RRP: S$339 (incl. GST).

HP Photosmart 7520 e-All-in-One inkjet photo printer.
The Photosmart 7520 e-All-in-One printer is HP’s top all-in-one home printer for lab-quality photos.
Other models in the Photosmart series of AiO printers are the Photosmart 6520 and 5520.
Photo quality
The Photosmart 6520 and 5520 uses only four ink cartridges (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Matt Black).
Basic specs
Print speed:
- Black: 14 ppm
- Colour: 10 ppm
Dimensions:
Weight:
The Photosmart 7520, however uses an additional ink cartridge – Photo Black – that’s dedicated to printing photos, and which enhances the quality of photo prints.
The print quality on HP’s Photo Paper was superb, with vivid accurate colour and no sign of banding.
What I was particularly impressed with was the print quality on normal paper, be it from a digital file or from a photocopy.
The copy looked identical to the original for both photos and colour illustrations.
Print quality for text documents and powerpoint graphics was also very good, although not as fast and pro-looking as most laser printers.
My Say:
The Photosmart 7520 e-AiO is great for families that print lots of photos, and needs to copy, scan and fax as well. Photo print quality is top-notch, while its wireless connectivity makes it a breeze to share the device between computers, tablets and smartphones in the home office.

It’s Valentine’s Day today. Here’s wishing all lovers a most romantic day/night.

Just in case you haven’t bought that Valentine’s Day card yet, here’s one you can use as a gift tag. Just print it out 🙂
I took this photo in a pottery workshop in this little Japanese shire called Takamori (高森), nestled in the caldera of Mount Aso (阿蘇山) in Kyushu (九州).
Loved the pottery pieces in the workshop. Knew at once it would go into the February 14th post for 2013.

Is your kid a fan of fast cars? Bake him his very own garage of Formula One machines for his birthday!

Bake your own garage of Formula One speed demons.
All you need is a set of cake molds which a friend gifted us.

Who says F1 drivers have to be all boys?
Add on the child’s favourite candies and lego figurines. And voila – his very own Grand Prix collection.

Sponsored by the rainbow connection.
* All photos in this post were taken with a Nikon D800 DSLR and AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8G ED lens. The shallow depth of field was amazing.

The top three heading for the podium.
I had to dial the aperture down to f/22 to get most of the scene in focus for the overview. Otherwise, the shallow depth of field effect for the other close-ups was exactly what I love.
