The Lytro light field camera is now available in Singapore, with manual controls, and in Red Hot, Electric Blue or Graphite. RRP is S$648 (8GB) and S$778 (16GB).

The Lytro camera captures all the light traveling in every direction in a scene.

“Manual controls give Lytro photographers the opportunity to take control of the exposure in a scene,” said Eric Cheng, Lytro’s director of photography.

The camera enables photographers to refocus a picture after it’s taken, so that different subjects in the photo can be brought into focus for creative composition.

These living pictures can be shared online with friends and family.

Lytro, creator of the world’s first consumer light field camera, also announced the introduction of manual controls.

These will ship with new cameras purchased, and as a free firmware update for existing customers.

With these easy-to-use manual controls, Lytro photographers can take even more creative pictures in a wide variety of conditions – from low light settings to high-speed subjects.

The new controls are:

  • Shutter Speed – By manually controlling the shutter speed, Lytro photographers can keep the shutter open longer to capture living pictures in dark conditions. The maximum shutter speed is 8 seconds and the minimum is 1/250 second.
  • ISO Sensitivity – Controlling ISO gives Lytro photographers more ways to take creative living pictures in a variety of lighting conditions, from low-light concerts and restaurants to brightly lit soccer fields and amusement parks. The ISO range is 80 (min) to 3200 (max).
  • Neutral Density (ND) Filter – When in full manual mode, Lytro photographers can turn on the ND Filter to adjust the amount of light captured in extremely bright settings.
  • Auto Exposure (AE) Lock – Lytro photographers can lock the auto exposure while changing the composition of a picture in a scene.

You can view some sample pictures shot using manual controls here.

The Lytro camera is available from today in the following retail locations in Singapore.

  • Challenger Store (Funan)
  • EpiCentre (313@Somerset)
  • Parisilk Electronics & Computers (Holland Village)
  • South Asia Computer (Funan)

HP Singapore roped in local celebrity, Irene Ang, to demonstrate how an user could leverage the wide range of HP products for work and play, and move content and media easily between different devices.

Irene went on a fictitious holiday to Morocco, armed with HP’s recently unveiled HP Envy x2 hybrid notebook, that comes with a detachable keyboard, which she’d used to book her holiday and hotel.

Irene arrived at a Moroccan hotel where the staff used an HP EllitePad 900 tablet to check her in, printing out her check-in paperwork wirelessly using an HP printer.

The EllitePad 900 comes with a jacket that doubles battery life and provides additional expansion ports.

Apple launches iPhone 5 with 4-inch Retina display, A6 chip and new connector

Wednesday, September 12th, 2012

No surprises as to the features of the iPhone 5 except that there’s no NFC. Most of the enhancements are evolutionary rather than revolutionary. As with its predecessors, iPhone 5 will come in 16 GB (S$948), 32 GB (S$1,088) and 64 GB (S$1,238) configurations.

It will arrive in 9 countries, including Singapore, on 21 September.

The iPhone 5 comes in Black & Slate or White & Silver.

The iPhone 5 will run on iOS 6, which will be released as a free software update two days before the smartphone itself hits the shelves.

Price (w GST)
  • 16 GB: S$948
  • 32 GB: S$1,088
  • 64 GB: S$1,238

The new operating system features 200 new features but will notably be foregoing Google’s Maps and YouTube apps.

The 4-inch Retina display is now taller, with 1136 x 640 pixels at a high 326 ppi resolution.

All these will run off the new Apple-designed A6 chip and 4G LTE network.

Design-wise, the iPhone 5 is a stunner, with a selection of Black & Slate and White & Silver.

The former has most of my friends salivating although the white is beginning to become somewhat commonplace by now.

And the body is only 7.6mm thin.

The rear camera now has 8 megapixels while the front 1.2-megapixel camera shoots 720p video at up to 30 fps for FaceTime HD video calls.

A new panorama feature stitches photos of up to 28 megapixels simply by moving the camera across a scene in one smooth motion – like the sweep panorama in Sony cameras.

Available in 9 countries on 21 September.

As expected, Apple has replaced the 30-pin connector with a new 9-pin Lightning connector.

A Lightning-to-30-pin Adapter (sold separately) is available to connect the iPhone 5 to legacy 30-pin accessories.

Due to the variation in LTE networks in different countries, the iPhone 5 will come in 3 variants in terms of LTE frequencies.

The first model (A1428 GSM) works only in the US and Canada, while the second (A1429 CDMA) works for US carriers Sprint and Verizon, as well as KDDI in Japan.

9-pin Lightning connector replaces 30-pin connector.

9-pin Lightning connector replaces 30-pin connector.

The third model (A1429 GSM) runs on 850MHz, 1800MHz and 2100Mz.

This is the most international version – compatible with the most number of countries.

Note that although the iPhone 5 runs on 1800MHz for LTE, Singapore operates its LTE network on 1800MHz and 2600MHz.

So in areas where 1800MHz is not available, the iPhone 5 will fall back onto 3G.

Likewise, in countries where the 4G is not compatible with your version of iPhone 5, you will still be able to use in on 3G.

The iPhone 4S will also be available for a suggested retail price of SGD$788 (incl GST) and iPhone 4 for a suggested retail price SGD$588 (incl GST).

The first nine countries getting the iPhone 5 on 21 September are Singapore, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, the US and the UK.

The iPhone 5 will be available in 9 countries on 21 Sep and another 22 countries on 28 Sep.

Samsung EX2F: launch and promotional offer

Regional launch of the Samsung EX2F compact camera in Singapore.

Regional launch of the Samsung EX2F compact camera in Singapore.

The launch event was held in 72-13 Mohamed Sultan Road in Singapore with some 60 attendees from Singapore, Malaysia and Australia.

Attendees had a chance to try out the camera for low-light night photography in a boat ride from Clarke Quay down the Singapore River and back.

The Samsung EX2F has a maximum aperture of F/1.4 at its widest angle of 24mm (35mm equivalent).

The 12-megapixel camera is Wi-Fi capable and has an optical zoom of approximately 3.3, with maximum zoom at 80mm.

I tried out the camera during the boat ride and found it offers the whole range of manual controls that you get with DSLRs.

From the short span of time that we had to play with the camera, we found the camera focuses reasonably fast and was able to take photos at relatively low light conditions, because of the bright F/1.4 lens.

It also has a full-swivel AMOLED screen for snapping photos at awkward angles.

You can read more about the Samsung EX2F and its technical specifications here.
