Google has begun providing Pixel users with functionality improvements through what they call Pixel feature drops. The first one has just arrived.

These features are already rolling out and will hit all Pixel phones (Pixel 2, 3, 3a, 4) in the coming weeks. To get them, you have to update to the latest version of Android and go to the PlayStore to start downloading the updated apps.
The Pixel feature drop is in addition to automatic updates that Google currently already provide for fixes and minor improvements.
This first feature drop includes a new way to capture portraits, easier Duo calls and automatic call screening (for those in the US).
So for Singaporeans, what’s new with the new Google Assistant in English?

For the first time, all 114 hawker centres in Singapore will be documented on Google Maps’ Street View by early 2020.

The Google Street View Trekker weighs 18kg and contains seven high-resolution cameras to create an immersive 360-degree panoramic view. A full charge of the trekker battery lasts for 6-8hrs.
The initiative is a collaboration between Google and the organisations that are co-driving the nomination to inscribe Hawker Culture in Singapore on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

The Street View Trekker with representatives from Google, NHB, NEA and FMAS, at Chinatown Market.
These organisations include the National Heritage Board (NHB), National Environment Agency (NEA) and Federation Of Merchants’ Associations, Singapore (FMAS).
The aim is to document Singapore’s beloved hawker centres on Google Maps to make them discoverable to anyone curious about our hawker centres or looking for their favourite hawker stalls.
More details below from the press release.

The Google Nest Hub has hit the shelves of Singapore today and is available in Charcoal and Chalk – through M1, COURTS and Challenger and Google Store at S$189.
Launch of Google Nest Hub at Google’s office in Singapore.
The Google Nest Hub is essentially the Google Home speaker – with a screen
Launch Promotion
Customers purchasing a Google Nest Hub from Challenger, COURTS, and M1 will also get a free Google Assistant compatible Mi Home Security Camera 360° 1080P by Xiaomi.
The promotion will be also coming to the Google Store in July.
So in addition to interacting with it purely through voice, you can now view information on the screen and interact with whatever is on the display with the usual touch-screen actions.
And the screen enables the Google Nest Hub to function as a photo frame showing photos from your Google Photos account, and serve as a table-top clock displaying the time, and setting off alarms to wake you up in the morning.
But most significant is the ability for the Google Nest Hub to function as the hub (yes, there’s a reason why it’s called by that name) of your smart home – displaying the status of the compatible smart devices within your home, and enabling you to interact and control those devices through voice or touch.

The new Google Pixel 2 XL phablet in the tech4xmas 2017 gift list not just because it’s the latest, but mostly because it’s up there among the best, and whoever you’re giving this to as a X’mas present is going to be absolutely delighted. Available in Singapore from 15 November, 2017.
My take:
“The Google Pixel 2 XL has one of the best cameras I’ve tried among the flagship models of other smartphone makers and it does it with a single lens!”
Made by Google, the Pixel 2 XL ships with Google organic apps installed and most significantly, the phone will be the first in the market to receive Android updates from Google.
Having tried out the phablet, it truly has a superb camera.
The rear camera has a 12.2-megapixels sensor with f/1.8 lens while the front camera has 8 megapixels and a f/2.4 lens. Measuring 6.2 x 3 inches, the phablet comes in just black or black & white.
In fact, it has the highest DxOMark of 98 for its camera performance – higher than all other smartphone cameras today – and it does it with a single lens!
Photos turned out crisp and clear even in low light.
The aluminum unibody of the Google Pixel 2 XL makes it water/dust resistant IP67 standards. That means the Pixel 2 XL – like the Apple iPhone X, iPhone 8 & 8 plus – can withstand immersion in water up to one meter for 30 minutes.
It offers the popular Portrait Mode, boasting background blur if you keep the background relatively far behind the subject you’re shooting.
