The most impressive offerings come from LG. It has unveiled its 55″ EM9600 measuring just 4mm thick – that’s thinner than a smartphone.

The organic light-emitting diode (OLED) system offers a ‘refresh-rate’ that is 1,000 times faster than most current sets – this means that moving images will appear much smoother.

The TV weights only 7.5kg.

LG will also be launching an 84” TV with ultra definition, as well as voice control remote controls, and a 3D gesture-control interface like that of Microsoft’s Xbox Kinect.

Samsung is pushing its 55" Super OLED TV, the ES 8000.

New Android smartphone: PRADA Phone by LG 3.0

PRADA and LG Electronics today launched in Singapore their jointly developed Android 2.3 Gingerbread smartphone. Pre-orders from the three local Telcos begin tomorrow.

LG and Prada announced the PRADA Phone by LG 3.0 at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Singapore.

The phone will be upgraded from Android 2.3 Gingerbread to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich in Q2 2012.

A small number of units will be delivered prior to the Lunar New Year (23 Jan) while the rest of the orders will be delivered in February.

Early birds get a free limited edition PRADA-branded cradle worth S$228, while stocks last.

I like the design of the phone. The NOVA display of the smartphone looked brilliant even under the bright spotlights at the function hall.

The 800 nit display must be the brightest I know among the current crop of smartphones.

Physically, the phone is wide and thin, measuring 127.5 by 69mm, with a thinness of only 8.5mm.

The back of the phone is covered in PRADA’s signature Saffiano pattern, while the UI – designed by PRADA has a black and white theme and includes fonts and custom designed line-drawing icons to replace the normal app icons.

My personal favourite was the covered socket for the cradle.

Instead of a plasticky cover, it is a metallic sliding cover that you can slide to one side to expose the socket.

The inertial for the slide is just right – not too loose or tight.

I suppose these are the little subtle design touches that people pay a premium for to won a PRADA-branded handphone.

Mind you, the premium is actually not very steep, considering phones with comparable technical specifications that are being launched range in price from S$800 onwards.

The closest smartphone with a similar target market segment is the Porsche Design P’9981 from BlackBerry, which was expected to be launched in January 2012 as well and has been estimated at US$1,700.

After Korea and Japan – which have already begun taken pre-orders – Singapore, Hong Kong and Taiwan are the earliest countries to accept pre-orders for the PRADA Phone by LG 3.0.

This is the third generation of the collaboration between PRADA and LG, which began in 2006 with the PRADA Phone by LG 1.0.

PRADA provides the aesthetic design while LG provides the technology and technical expertise for building the phone.

First announced back in November last year, the Omnia W is the first smartphone from Samsung using Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7.5 Mango operating system.

I played with the phone during its launch yesterday together with two other smartphones (GALAXY Nexus and GALAXY W) and two tablets (GALAXY Tab 7.7 and GALAXY Tab 7.0 Plus).

The phone was fast and responsive and the interface reminded me of Nokia’s newly launched Lumia 800, which is also based on Windows Phone 7.5 Mango.

Samsung’s Omnia W has a sleek design with a metallic finish and a rich 3.7” Super AMOLED display, giving vivid clarity for photos and videos captured with the 5MP camera.

The latest Windows Phone version provides enhanced usability including superior web browsing with integration of Internet Explorer 9 and Bing, as well as Office Hub that provides productivity on-the-go.

The smartphone includes Samsung-exclusive productivity apps including Samsung AllShare that provides seamless content transfer between the smartphone and other DLNA-enabled devices such as HDTVs, monitors and digital cameras.

Here are the main technical specifications of the Omnia W.

Priced at roughly half the price of the top-of-the-line GALAXY Nexus, the GALAXY W is targeted at those seeking a balance between style and performance, without burning too big a hole in the pocket.

It has the same price tag as the Samsung Omnia W, which was launched together with the GALAXY W.

The 7” tablet weights 345g and is 9.96mm thin. It is slightly smaller than its S$898 cousin – the GALAXY Tab 7.7.

Like its predecessor, it offers voice and video call support, without the need for a headset, allowing users to catch up with friends and family from anywhere.

Samsung is pitching this tablet as a portable tablet which not only fits in a lady’s handbag or a man’s clutch bag, but also doubles up as a backup phone.

If you don’t fancy holding up the tablet to the ear when making calls, use it with a pair of earphones or Bluetooth headset.

I had a quick hands-on on the sleek looking smartphone. It felt really responsive and fast.

I was looking for glitches and bugs since it’s the first phone to feature the latest iteration of the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

The smartphone features a 4.65” HD Super AMOLED display at 720p resolution and a fast 1.2GHz dual core processor to take advantage of its enhanced multitasking capabilities.

A user interface has been redesigned with improved multi-tasking, notifications, Wi-Fi hotspot and NFC support, as well as a full web browsing experience

Designed to provide a “pure Google” experience, GALAXY Nexus will be the first to receive software upgrades and new applications as soon as they become available.
