Sony has introduced the world’s first Full-Frame lens with power zoom capability. The SELP28135G lens is an addition to the Alpha E-mount camera system. Price & availability TBA.

Despite its heavyweight credentials, the lens’s compact dimensions and reduced weight are especially welcome in shooting situations where maximum mobility is needed.
The FE PZ 28-135mm F4 G OSS (SELP28135G) offers videographers and film-makers a new creative tool for cameras such as the 35mm full-frame α7S, whether they are shooting 4K video, Full HD or stills.
The SELP28135G is compatible with all Sony E-mount cameras and camcorders.
Its focal length extends over an even wider 42-202.5mm (35mm equivalent) range when attached to bodies with an APS-C sensor.
These include Sony’s α6000/α5100 cameras as well as pro-friendly Super 35mm format camcorders like the NEX-FS700 or new PXW-FS7.
A constant F4 maximum aperture lets movie-makers and still photographers achieve beautiful depth of field effects and stable exposure control across the entire zoom range, from wide-angle to telephoto.
The needs of serious film-makers are catered for with Sony’s new ‘Smooth Motion Optics’ design philosophy.
Targeting the highest possible image quality when using large-sensor cameras, this advanced optical/mechanical design addresses three issues of prime concern to movie-makers: change in angle of view (‘breathing’) while focusing, focus shifts during zoom and movement of the optical axis during zoom.

Sony’s lens-style cameras combine the spontaneity and easy sharing of smartphones with the image quality of dedicated cameras.
These cameras are connected to the smartphone via Wi-Fi.

The ILCE-QX1 lets serious photographers make use of their E-mount / A-mount (requires LA-EA4 adaptor for A-mount lenses) lens collection – be it zoom, wide angle, tele or macro.

QX1 comes with built-in pop-up flash.
Users can exercise control over exposure, focus and shooting modes.
The camera’s APS-C size Exmor CMOS sensor has 20.1-megapixels works with Sony’s BIONZ X processor that now features improved area-specific noise reduction – producing low-noise images, even when shooting in near-darkness.
The big sensor inside the QX1 also creates pro-style ‘bokeh’ effects with creamy background blur – another trick that smartphones can’t match.
The QX1 comes with many features, including RAW recording and pop-up flash.

It’s Valentine’s Day today. This year, it coincides with Chap Goh Meh – the fifteenth and final day of the Chinese New Year – which many consider the Chinese Valentine’s Day. Here’s wishing all lovers a most romantic day/night!

Lots of lovey-dovey couples here, in the form of hugging salt and pepper bottles. I took this photo at the Hakaniemi Market Hall in Helsinki, Finland in summer. There were plenty of such charming craft stores for tourists and local Finns alike. Taken with a Nikon D600 with AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR lens. Photo credit: John Tan.
In many places in the world that celebrate Valentine’s Day, boys buy flowers, chocolates and gifts for their girlfriends, wives, mistresses or lovers.
Actually, marketing practitioners should examine this so-called unique Japanese culture more closely.
Apparently, the practice has its roots in 1936 as part of the advertising campaign of chocolate makers in Kobe, but has captured the imagination of the Japanese populace such that it is widely practiced today.
Those chocolate makers must have been laughing to the bank, having created nation wide, recurring demand out of thin air.
Brilliant!
Sometimes the girl reciprocates.
In Japan, it is the girl who buys for the guys.
I know – because I received plenty on Valentine’s Day when I was in Japan.
The tradition in Japan is for girls to buy white chocolates (called giri-chocos – 義理チョコ) and give them to the guys.
This does not happen just between couples that are in a relationship.

I was just chatting with an Indian friend who works for an MNC yesterday and I remarked that New Year’s Day must be the most prolifically declared public holiday in the world – even more so than Christmas Day.

As we step into the first day of 2014, here’s wishing everyone a great year ahead! Taken with a Nikon D600 with 24-120mm lens, at Suomenlinna, Finland.
He agreed but duly informed me that in India, it was not a public holiday since the country observes the New Year at different times of the year, depending on the local calendar.

Photo of the Day: This is probably what a hunted mouse last sees before it realises that it is being hunted by this cat.

This adult brindle was the ugliest of the litter of cats that roamed the bushes near an HDB estate. But long after the cuteness of the other cats and kittens has worn off, I find myself coming back to look at this cat – it’s so full of personality! Photo taken with a Nikon D7100 with AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/4G ED VR lens. Photo credit: John Tan.
Crouched low and inching forward, I really wouldn’t want to be a mouse staring this feline in the eyes.
