A*STAR’s Business Analytics Translational Centre (BATC) collaborates with Red Hat to Use open source solutions for data analytic applications development.

Red Hat, Inc., a leading provider of open source solutions, today announced plans for a new collaboration with A*STAR’s Business Analytics Translational Centre (BATC) to help accelerate innovation and drive adoption of business analytics with open source solutions from Red Hat.
“Open source has evolved to become a foundation for innovation. As technology continues to become more of a commodity, the standardization of parts can help spur more rapid innovation,” said Jim Whitehurst, president and CEO of Red Hat.
Jim Whitehurst, president and CEO of Red Hat, was present for the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) today in Singapore with Dr Tan Geok Leng, Chairman of BATC Management Committee and Executive Director for the Science & Engineering Research Council (SERC), A*STAR.
Red Hat will be collaborating with BATC in areas of big data, middleware, Platform-as-a-service (PaaS), cloud and storage, for the innovation and development of current and upcoming analytics projects.

The kernel which forms the core of the Linux system is the result of one of the largest co-operative software projects ever attempted.
Almost 8,000 individual developers contributed to each kernel release between ver. 2.6.11 to 3.2, and the numbers continue to increase.

The latest version of the RIM’s smartphone operating system – BlackBerry 7.1 – is available for BlackBerry Bold 9900 smartphones in Singapore.
The new OS 7.1 upgrade will enable users to share content by using “BlackBerry Tag” once NFC is enabled on their smartphones.
BlackBerry OS7.1 includes BlackBerry Tag if the smartphone is NFC-enabled
Users can upgrade their software for free online, or by using the BlackBerry Desktop Manager software.
Use BlackBerry Tag to share Contact information between NFC-enabled BlackBerry smartphones.
The BlackBerry 7.1 OS incorporates a new feature called BlackBerry Tag which makes sharing of information and content easier – simply tap two NFC-enabled BlackBerry Bold 9900 smartphones against each other.
Users can instantly invite a friend to BBM (BlackBerry Messenger), exchange contact information, documents, URLs, photos and other multimedia content.
Users can also pair their BlackBerry smartphone with an NFC enabled Bluetooth device.
With BlackBerry 7.1, users can now turn their BlackBerry smartphone into a mobile hotspot that can be shared by up to 5 Wi-Fi -enabled devices, including laptops and tablets.
Simply tap both NFC-enabled BlackBerry smartphones to share information.
In addition, a new Battery Saving Mode feature has been added which allows customers to extend the battery life of their BlackBerry Bold 9900 when it is most needed.
The new feature provides customers the option to have their smartphone settings automatically adjusted when the battery power reaches a level pre-defined by the users.
Some of the settings the Battery Saving Mode will automatically adjust include the brightness level, backlight timeout, and also the mobile hotspot auto shutdown timer.

Trend Micro has released the results of its study on the four main mobile operating systems in a report titled “Enterprise Readiness of Consumer Mobile Platforms”.
The security firm found the BlackBerry 7 OS the most secure mobile operating system, followed by iOS 5, Windows Phone 7.5, and Android 2.3.

Android 2.3 was used in the study because it was the dominant installed/supplied version of Google’s mobile OS at the time of the research.

This release from Research In Motion (RIM) adds new APIs and application functionality which developers can leverage to create WebWorks applications that deliver a richer, more interactive end-user experience.
The BlackBerry WebWorks SDK is the toolset that supports developers who wish to build applications using standard web technologies for the BlackBerry WebWorks Platform.
BlackBerry WebWorks is RIM’s open source, mobile web platform that enables developers to build standalone, integrated applications for BlackBerry devices.
RIM releases Version 2.1 of the BlackBerry WebWorks SDK for Tablet OS

More Ways to Monetize
With support for the BlackBerry In App Payment API, developers can now include In App Payment Services as part of their applications. This enables them to sell digital goods directly from their BlackBerry PlayBook applications.
More Ways to Integrate
Developers can now further integrate their applications with the functionality of the Tablet OS for PlayBook and can create new BlackBerry experiences that leverage the PlayBook’s professional grade features. Among the new APIs that enable deeper integration are:
- Camera API for taking pictures/video taping from within the WebWorks applications with the PlayBook’s powerful dual HD cameras
- Microphone API which developers can use to activate the capability to record audiowith the PlayBook’s microphone
- Identity API provides applications with the ability to retrieve information about the BlackBerry PlayBook PIN
- File IO API which gives developers the possibility to read, copy and write files onto the Tablet OS file system.
More Development Choices
In addition to JavaScript many Tablet OS WebWorks APIs can now be called using AJAX which allows for increased development flexibility for developers who prefer a RESTful or URI implementation.
The new File Properties API, Home Screen Category and App Securities Permissions also enable deeper app integration with the BlackBerry PlayBook and expand development choices.
To help developers with a smooth transition to version 2.1 of the BlackBerry WebWorks SDK, RIM has also updated the API Reference Guide and included an additional mechanism to call some of the WebWorks APIs.

Smartphones have become the next battleground for the technology behemoths to seize pole position. Exciting times lie ahead with the rivalry between Apple’s iPhone/iPad and smartphones based on Google’s Android, while HP plots its next move with the newly acquired Palm’s WebOS, and incumbent leader RIM seeks to preserve its market share.

According to the NPD Group, smartphones sold during the first quarter of 2010 in the United States stands had the following OS (operating system). NPD’s sales data are based on large consumer surveys:
- 36% – Research in Motion’s Blackberry OS
- 28 % – Google’s Android OS
- 21% – Apple’s iPhone OS
