Nokia’s amazing “Prepare to be amazed” launch

Thursday, December 8th, 2011

For its launch of the Lumia 800 and Lumia 710, Nokia has made it clear that it is not just launching these two handsets.

Niklas Savander, Executive Vice President, Markets, Nokia Corporation flew in from Finland to expound the virtues of the Lumia product line in Singapore.

Instead, it is launching a holistic mobile experience for the smartphone user – from the hardware performance to the software user interface, right down to the ecosystem of applications for users and development tools and environment for developers.

The launch event was a testimony to this holistic approach.

There were customized sessions to woo different segments of that ecosystem.

The first session of the day was a “fireside chat” where Nokia and Microsoft executives briefed developers how they are developing and building the ecosystem.

Nokia is working with global and local developers to create new, innovative and differentiated apps and content for all Nokia devices.

Emphasis has been placed on supporting local developers transition to develop for the Windows Phone platform.

It is also partnering with local institutions to actively develop applications.

This was followed by the keynote conference when the actual products were launched, and guests and media had a chance to hands-on the handsets and accessories.

Key executives from both Nokia and Microsoft were on hand for interviews to go into details with their plans for the Singapore market and their local focus, as well as the product specifications for the Nokia Lumia range of products.

The launch event was wrapped up with a bum-boat ride to Clark Quay for a party at Read Bridge.

The break-out sessions were helmed by specialists from Research In Motion (RIM) and its partners and delved into wide ranging topics from technical issues to commercial and monetizing approaches.

Delivering the keynote address was Gregory Wade, Regional Managing Director, East Asia, RIM.

He revealed there were more than 1,000 registrants for the DevCon Asia event in Singapore.

Wade quoted a GfK report that for the first half of 2011, BlackBerry was the number one smartphone in multiple countries in Asia, including Indonesia, Thailand and the Philippines.

He said that more than 3 million BlackBerry fans were engaged on social media channels in Asia.

Alec Saunders then updated developers of BlackBerry Jam – RIM’s initiative to provide a one-stop-shop for all BlackBerry developers to assess a wide array of developer resources.

The initiative was announced at the BlackBerry DevCon Americas in October. Since then, a BlackBerry Jam communities have sprung up all over the world linking experts, partners and developers for all to be more successful on the BlackBerry platform.

George Staikos then delved into the new BlackBerry platform – previously named BBX but now renamed to BB10. Staikos is the VP, Web Technologies at RIM.

He also described the two choices of runtime environments available for developers. The Native runtime environment was for “spectacular” performance whereas HTML5 will enable the dream of “write once deploy everywhere”.

Whilst the native environment will serve as the bridge between POSIX based systems and BlackBerry 10 and allow rapid porting of native applications, HTML5 is the mass application platform for the future.

The cross-platform, cross-device HTML5 can serve as the bridge between BlackBerry 6, BlackBerry 7 and BlackBerry 10 and is the obvious choice for modern application development.

BlackBerry is therefore fully committed to HTML5.

RIM has rebranded BBX as BB10

A US District Judge ruled in favour of software company Basis International Ltd who filed for a temporary restraining order. It holds the “BBx”  trademark for its own software.

District Judge William P. Johnson wrote in his ruling that consumers are “likely to be confused by RIM’s use of BBX in connection with RIM’s goods and services”. – Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Basis of Albuquerque had threatened legal action in October after RIM initially unveiled BBX as its new platform for smartphones, tablets and embedded systems.

According to itworldcanada.com, RIM had said at that time that it did not believe the marks are confusing since the two companies were in different lines of businesses.

Let’s just hope that CBS television network does not take issue with RIM over any confusion between the mobile platform and its own version of BB10 – the tenth season of the American reality television series Big Brother 10, which ran in the summer of 2008.

Weighing only 1.3kg, this is Bose’s first wireless mobile speaker and allows users that already own Bluetooth-enabled devices like the iPhone, iPad and Android phones to listen to the thousands of songs stored on those devices.

Proprietary speaker technology from Bose promises to deliver exceptional sound quality that reproduces full-range audio from a single-hand-held enclosure.

At less than two inches thick, and similar in size to a hard-cover text book, the Bose SoundLink Wireless Mobile speaker can easily fit in a bag, backpack or briefcase.

Similar to the iPad cover, the cover of the Bose SoundLink Wireless speaker unfolds into a stand – and the speaker is ready to groove. Close the cover and the speaker automatically shuts off.

The rechargeable lithium-ion battery lasts three hours at maximum volume, and more than eight hours at typical listening levels.

As a mobile speaker for road warriors, the speaker is built to withstand the rigours of daily use. Bose environmental labs has tested the speaker to resist salt-fog, sand, wind and moisture. So you can bring it to the beach as a boom box.

With end-caps made from automotive-grade chrome, the Bose SoundLink Wireless Mobile speaker can survive being dropped repeatedly.

Accessory covers in nylon (bright red or royal purple) and leather (burgundy or tan) are available separately for S$59 and S$99, respectively.

Travel: When technology fails you

That’s when old school topo skills come in useful.

In the interest of packing light and reducing the gadget count, I’d decided to leave behind the TomTom VIA 280 dedicated GPS portable navigation device (PND) at home.

Mt Kinabalu, shrouded in clouds

Mt Kinabalu, shrouded in clouds

We were also undecided whether to rent a car to self-drive from Kota Kinabalu to Mount Kinabalu or to take a local tour.

Furthermore,  I’d just installed the equivalent turn-by-turn navigation app from TomTom on an  iPhone 3GS and found it to work as well as the PND while driving around Singapore.

When we arrived at 8pm last night, we found the rental rates at the airport to be reasonable and decided to go for the self-drive option.

Imagine our dismay when we found the iPhone 3GS could not get a GPS fix.

The other iPhone 3G that we had did not have any problems getting a fix so we realized the problem lay with the GPS unit within the iPhone 3GS.

Fortunately, the 15-minute journey from the airport to the hotel was short and simple, and we managed it through good old verbal instructions from the rental guy and maps from the brochure.

By the time we reached “Le Meridin” hotel (the neon light for the second “e” in Meridien must have burnt out), the iPhone 3GS still couldn’t get a fix.

The next morning, it was the same story, the 3GS couldn’t get a fix even though the 3G could.

Who would have thought a relatively simple and basic module like the GPS would fail on a month-old iPhone (Yes – I know – it’s two generations behind the iPhone 4S).

And the iPhone 3G (Yes – that’s THREE generations behind the iPhone 4S – and proud of that) didn’t have that app installed, and I wasn’t prepared to chalk up huge data roaming fees using the Google Maps app on the 3G.

So it was back to paper maps, driving instructions from the concierge, and old school topographical skills.

We’d driven around the complicated and tiny country roads of the Loire Valley in France on nothing more than paper maps, and surely the single highway route to Mt Kinabalu would be a piece of cake.

Prior to starting off, I ran the route through the Google Maps app on my iPhone 3G to download map data into the app’s cache using the hotel’s free WiFi. That should serve as reference later on during the drive.

Wild squirrel on the alert, at the foothills of Mt Kinabalu.

We made the 2-hour drive to Mt Kinabalu smoothly. There was only one wrong turn prior to reaching the highway and a quick check on the Google Maps app on the iPhone 3G guided us back to the highway and we were on our way.

As in a marathon, most amateurs complete in more than 4 hours, although most choose to do the climb over 2 days, planning the arrival at the peak at sunrise.

After a lunch stop at Pekan Nabalu, we reached the base HQ of Mt Kinabalu. Only at this highest mountain in Malaysia and South East Asia did the iPhone 3GS finally pick up a GPS signal, and it promptly told us we were some 300km away in Bandar Seri Begawan, the capital of Brunei.

After a long while it finally placed us at Mt Kinabalu. All along the way back to Kota Kinabalu, the GPS of the iPhone 3GS kept flip-flopping between our true location and Bandar Seri Begawan, forcing the GPS app to recalculate routes.

Half-way home, the 3GS decided it had had enough. It finally ran out of battery – from the constant search for a GPS signal, as well as its exertions to recalculate routes.

By which time, we’d all but given up on depending on the iPhone. I sure hope TomTom comes up with a GPS app on the Android.
