One year to the day from the launch of the iPhone 5, Apple has announced the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c, as well as the iOS7.
The new iPhones will arrive on next Friday, 20 September in 9 countries, including Singapore, Hong Kong and China.
Both the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c sport a 4-inch Retina display.
With all the “leakages” that preceded the announcement, there were hardly any surprises – except for the pricing, which seemed on the high side of market expectations.
Pricing in Singapore
Prices below are without contract but inclusive of GST.
| Model | iPhone 5s | iPhone 5c |
|---|---|---|
| 16GB | S$988 | S$848 |
| 32GB | S$1,148 | S$988 |
| 64GB | S$1,288 | – |
| Cases | S$58 | S$42 |
Both the two new iPhone models will be available from the Apple Online Store, and through SingTel, M1, StarHub and select Apple Authorised Resellers.
Geographies getting the new iPhones first
US, Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Puerto Rico, Singapore and the UK.
iPhone 5s cases will be available in beige, black, blue, brown, yellow and red while the iPhone 5c cases will be available in blue, green, pink, yellow, black and white.
A new iPhone 4S 8GB model will also be available for S$588 inc GST.
Where is the iPhone 5c targeted
Many has associated the “c” in the iPhone 5c to stand for “cheap” and targeted for the lower-priced market segment – since it is priced slightly less than the iPhone 5s.
It is more likely to stand for “colour” though and with its expensive SRP, is hardly targeted towards the segment occupied by the likes of Nokia Lumia 520 etc.
To me, it’s simply a fall-back to catch those customers who feel the pricing of the iPhone 5s to be too steep – yet still want in on Apple’s latest installment of the iPhone.
With the similarity between the colours and those of the Nokia Lumia series of Windows Phone smartphones, you can expect people drawing attention to the similarity and poking fun at Apple for “copying”.
iPhone 5s
Apple bills the iPhone 5s as “the most forward-thinking smartphone in the world” – with a 64-bit A7 chip, new 8-megapixel iSight Camera with True Tone Flash, and Touch ID Fingerprint Sensor.
The 8-megapixel iSight camera features a larger f/2.2 aperture and a new, larger sensor with 1.5μ pixels for better sensitivity and low-light performance, resulting in better pictures.
It comes with the new True Tone flash hat variably adjusts color and intensity for over 1,000 combinations, so photos taken with a flash appear more natural.
iPhone 5s also includes a new Burst Mode, Slo-Mo video with 120 fps, a new FaceTime HD camera for better low-light performance and audio-only FaceTime calls with iOS 7.
The iPhone 5s comes in gold, silver or space gray.
iPhone 5c
The iPhone 5c has been touted by Apple as “the most colourful iPhone yet”, coming slightly cheaper than the iPhone 5s and shipping in five colours – blue, green, pink, yellow and white.
The iPhone 5c has an A6 chip, the 8-megapixel iSight Camera, and a new FaceTime HD camera.
It is crafted from a single, hard-coated polycarbonate body with a steel reinforced frame for a solid, sturdy feel.
The frame doubles as the iPhone 5c’s multiband antenna.
iOS 7
Apple’s new iOS 7 boasts “a completely redesigned user interface and great new features”
New features include Control Center, Notification Center, improved Multitasking, AirDrop, enhanced Photos and Safari.
In addition, iOS 7 has been engineered with deep technical and design integration with both iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c.
iOS 7 will be available as a free software update starting on next Wednesday, 18 September for iPhone 4 and later, iPad 2 and later, iPad mini and iPod touch (fifth generation).
Some features may not be available on all products.
