Launched last year, the 2.5-inch-based My Passport 2TB portable drive was the first to squeeze such a high capacity into a portable drive – at a time when rivals believed cramming such capacities required new recording technology.

A single standard half-metre USB cable connects the drive to the computer and provides both the data and power connection.

My Passport 2TB comes pre-formatted in NTFS so I needed to do was to plug in. The drivers installed themselves automatically and two minutes later, the drive is up and ready to use.

You can of course use it with a Mac, but you’ll need to reformat it into HFS+ in order to write to it.

My Passport portable drives feature fast USB 3.0 connectivity; USB 2.0 compatibility; continuous, automatic backup software; and password protection with hardware encryption.

The included software offers the flexibility to customize the drive to a user’s storage preferences: installing all features, only the components needed, or using the drive without the software.

Other capacities in the My Passport line of portable hard drives are 500GB, 750GB and 1TB.
