New arrival: Google Wifi mesh Wi-Fi home router in Singapore

Google has launched its home Wi-Fi system in Singapore – the first in Southeast Asia and the 8th country in the world to begin shipping the mesh router. Prices below.

Customers will be able to get a three-pack Google Wifi at $0 upfront cost when they sign up or renew selected StarHub Broadband or Hubbing all-in-one plans.

Google Wifi will be available in Singapore from 31 August, 2017 – exclusive to StarHub customers.

By setting up two or more Google Wifi routers around the home, a mesh Wi-Fi network is set up in the home that extends the range of a traditional router and provides coverage to dead Wi-Fi zones plaguing most home Wi-Fi networks.

This is especially useful for larger apartments or homes with physical layouts that are introduce Wi-Fi dead zones.

“Having a fast and reliable Wi-Fi connection is important to Singaporeans. Google Wifi provides seamless coverage at home, solving common issues like dead zones, spotty Wi-Fi connections, confusing set-up processes and so much more. Parents will also have greater control of their family’s Wi-Fi network, enabling them to spend quality time with their children whenever they want,” said Martin Geh, Managing Director, APAC Hardware Partnerships at Google.

Other mesh routers that have been introduced recently in Singapore include those from Linksys (Velop) and AirTies (Air 4920).

Google Wifi was first launched in the US end of last year and has been shipped to Canada, UK, France, Germany, Australia and New Zealand.

Google’s offering focuses on making the network easy to setup and manage.

Initial setup and subsequent day-to-day network management is done via the Google Wifi app that’s available on Android and iOS.

Features include creating a separate guest network, pausing Wi-Fi on specific devices, giving a device prioritised access for faster speeds, and running network checks.

I set up a 3-router mesh network in my home and it was easy to follow the onscreen instructions on the app.

Once the first router is setup, it was a breeze to add additional routers to extend the mest Wi-Fi network.

The first router is connected directly to the modem via a LAN cable and replaces the existing router provided by the Internet Service Provider.

Google Wifi bundle exclusive to StarHub

“Mesh networking is quickly becoming popular, and we are thrilled to be Google’s exclusive local partner for Google Wifi, which has set the standard for ease-of-use, performance and affordability. With Google Wifi, our home broadband customers can easily enjoy wireless broadband connections at every corner of their homes,” said Howie Lau, Chief Marketing Officer, StarHub.

StarHub’s plans for the Google Wifi bundle include its standalone 1Gbps Fibre Broadband service as well as multi-service SurfHub , HomeHub 1000 and HomeHub Go 1Gbps bundles.

StarHub’s interest-free instalment scheme will enable customers to split the payment into $15 monthly installments over 24 months through their StarHub bill.

This works out to a total of S$360, a discount off the router’s S$597 price tag.

During service installation, a trained StarHub Hub Trooper will recommend the best placement to address Wi-Fi blind spots to provide whole-home Wi-Fi coverage.

I will post the review on Google Wifi after I’ve tested it more extensively.
