The new Canon EOS M2 compact mirrorless interchangeable lens camera incorporates Hybrid CMOS AF II for significantly enhanced autofocus (AF) performance. Available in black or white, the EOS M2 goes on sale in Japan in mid-December. Price TBA.

The EOS M was first released in September 2012.
Its successor – the EOS M2 promises image quality on par with EOS series of digital SLR cameras but in a compact and lightweight design.

Compared with its predecessor, Canon claims that the new EOS M2 realises dramatically improved autofocusing performance and now incorporates built-in Wi-Fi in a body that is approximately 8 percent smaller in volume.

The built-in Wi-Fi make it easy for users to share their photos easily via the Internet.
It allows users to use their smartphone as a wireless controller to shoot stills with the camera from afar.
Additionally, still images stored on the camera’s memory card can be transferred and saved to a compatible smartphone.

Employing Hybrid CMOS AF II, the M2 combines high-precision contrast AF and high-speed phase-detection AF for high-performance autofocusing across approximately 80 percent of the width and height of the sensor’s imaging surface.
Compared with the EOS M, AF is possible across a wider imaging area than that offered by the earlier EOS M and is approximately 2.3 times faster.
This enables improved focusing performance and improved tracking response when shooting a moving subject.
It has a maximum continuous shooting speed of 4.6 frames per second.
The Canon EOS M2 weighs only 274g (body+battery+memory card) and measures 104.9 x 65.2 x 31.6 mm.
It has an TFT LCD touch screen display that’s 3 inches wide
The 18-megapixel APS-C-size CMOS sensor and Canon’s DIGIC 5 image processor bestows upon the EOS M2 a high level of image quality like that of a large sensor.
The EOS M2 has a maximum ISO of 12800 (expandable to ISO 25600), enabling users to capture images with reduced noise even in low-light conditions.
Available in Japan in mid-December (price TBA), Canon has set initial production at 20,000 units per month.
