This is the time of the year when The Great Singapore Sale 2013 (31 May to 28 July) hits Singapore. But if you’re not in Singapore, or if you’re thinking of doing some of your shopping online, here are some tips for buying things online – safely.

Start by securing the device you use to do your shopping, be it a notebook or a smartphone.

Make sure you have malware-protection software installed and the apps and browsers you use are updated.

Next research the site you use for reviews and recommendations from other shoppers.

And exercise some common sense on the deals put offered by the site – if something is too good to be true, it probably IS too good to be true!

Before checkout, scrutinise the return policies, warranties and returns, as well as shipping terms.

When paying, make sure secure payment is used – and don’t ever send credit card details via the email.
