Google Unveils Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro Android 12 Phones

After months of leaks and teasers, Google has officially unveiled the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. Featuring Google’s custom-developed Tensor chip, both versions will come to Singapore early next year. Details TBA.

The new Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro are powered by the new Tensor chip and ships with Android 12.

Even though the launch price of the Pixel 6 is US$100 lower than the Pixel 5, it features top-notch hardware compared to the mid-range offering of its predecessor.

The new Tensor chip is a 5nm SoC with an octa-core processor with two Cortex-X1 cores, as well as two mid-level cores and four power-efficient ones.

I’m excited that the custom image processor will bring the computational photography on the Pixel to greater levels.

Camera smarts include Magic Eraser (for removing unwanted distractions from a photo) and Face Unblur (which selects a sharp face from a few photos and puts it onto an action shot.

Portrait Mode offers better subject separation and improved skin tone rendering.

Night Mode and Astrophotography have also been enhanced.

Both Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro feature Live Translate, which is capable of translating messages, captions, or text in the camera viewfinder for up to 55 languages.

With Tensor, it can act as an Interpreter in French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, or Spanish, in fully offline mode.

The chip has a built-in Titan M2 security chip which protects photos, texts, and sensitive data from external attacks.

Google promises up to 5 years of security updates to its Pixel 6 line of phones.

The Google Pixel 6 Pro has a larger (6.7-inch), sharper (3120×1440, 1440p) and faster (120Hz refresh) screen than the Pixel 6.

The LTPO AMOLED offers a variable refresh rate to preserve battery life.

The Pixel 6 has a 6.4-inch, 2400×1080 (1080p) AMOLED with up to 90Hz refresh rate.

Both phones are IP68 dust and water-resistant, have in-screen fingerprint scanners and come with Gorilla Glass Victus, though the Pixel 6 Pro’s display is curvier – Google calls it 3D glass.

Camera wise, both the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro ships with a 50-megapixel 1/1.3-inch Samsung GN1 sensor that combines pixels to produce a 12.5MP image and a 12MP ultrawide camera.

This 50MP main camera is a big step up over the main sensor in the Pixel 5 (as well as the Pixel 4, 3, and 2) with a 150% increase in light gathering ability.

The Pixel 6 Pro, however, has an additional 4x zoom camera with a large 48MP sensor, which Google boasts can go up to 20X using ‘Super Res Zoom’.

In front, the Pixel 6 Pro has an ultrawide 11.1MP fixed-focus selfie camera – more than the 8MP selfie camera in the Pixel 6.

The Pixel 6 Pro has a bigger, 5,000mAh battery while the Pixel 6 has a smaller 4,600mAh capacity.

Both offer wired charging at up to 30W and wireless charging at 21W/23W through Google’s new Pixel Stand charger.

Both wired and wireless chargers are not included in the box.
