Some insights from the Norton Cybercrime Report 2012 based on a survey conducted in July last year. (* All percentages are based on % of Singaporeans)
The report found that Singaporeans love to access the Internet on their mobile devices and they feel very safe doing so.
This could result in complacency where a notable percentage choose not to use mobile security – an alarming statistic, given how addicted they are to their mobile devices.
Need for their mobile devices *
- 84% use their mobiles phones to connect to the Internet.
- 55% consider themselves addicted to their mobile devices.
- If they could choose two items to save from a fire, 49% would save their mobile device.
Good mobile device online habits *
- 79% only download applications from trusted sources.
- 71% never save important personal information.
- 61% limit the sites they visit.
- 59% use secure payment methods when making purchases.
- 56% turn off or disallow geographic location tracking.
Do not use mobile security solutions *
- More than 1 in 3 do not use passwords (35%).
- 1 in 2 (50%) do not have a solution to lock, locate and wipe.
- Almost 3 in 5 (58%) do not use any mobile security solution, with 2 in 5 (43%) not aware of such solutions.
- 3 out of 10 (29%) choose not to use any mobile security solution.
Average cost of replacing a lost or stolen mobile device in Singapore: S$323.30.
Lost or had their mobile phones stolen *
- Only 23% tried to locate their devices using tracking software.
- Only 13% would wipe their devices using the web.
- 61% had to call their mobile service provider to disable their device.
