Today is the Safer Internet Day, a global campaign that promotes for everyone a healthier Internet. Started in 2004, this year marks the 10th anniversary of the annual campaign that is held on the second day of the second week of February since 2004.
Safer Internet Day is organised by Insafe and co-founded by the European Union, in order to encourage safer and more responsible use of online technologies and services.
Focus for 2013
A key objective this year is to “connect with respect” – which aims to inform, educate and advise users on how to improve their personal safety while surfing online, taking responsibility for their own actions while also respecting the rights of others.
The spotlight remains on one of the main issues of online safety – cyberbullying – which is becoming a serious concern and can happen online or on mobile phones.
It’s important for adults to educate their children on online etiquette, to ensure they avoid talking to strangers or accepting friend requests from people they don’t know, and to limit their time allowed online or by restricting the apps they download on their mobile phones to prevent such things from happening.
