After much anticipation and speculation, Canon has finally launched its first mirrorless interchangeable lens camera – the EOS M (79,800 yen including the EF-M 22mm f/2.0 STM lens).
It is the last of the major camera makers to join in the fray. The camera will be available in early October.

Red Canon EOS M
13:50 The EOS M records Full HD video. Able to shoot at high maximum ISO of 6,400, and has Movie Servo AF (like in the EOS 650D) which enables continuous auto-focus during movie shooting.
Also comes with Video Snapshots feature (common in Canon LEGRIA camcorders), which records short video snippets of 2, 4 or 8 seconds, before stitching all of them sequentially into video snapshot albums.
13:40 Seven built-in creative filters: Graniny Black & White, Soft Focus, Toy Camera, Miniature, Art Bold, Water Paintin,g and Fish-eye filters.

13:30 Multi Shot Noise Reduction takes four consecutive shots, then merge and align into single shot (in-camera) for cleaner final image.

Full compatibility with existing Canon EF/EF-S lenses with adapter (EF-EOS M) without any impact to FOV etc. Update: Canon tells Bloomberg that the adapter will cost about 12,000 yen – that’s about S$195.

No of course not, it’s quite xiong, trying to wrestle with the WordPress app for Android on a 7″ tablet with on-screen keyboard. Need to finetune the workflow. Anyway, the Canon launch of its first mirrorless interchangeable lens camera is quite a significant milestone event. Can’t afford to livecast every single event. Even Engadget doesn’t do that.
You’re right, it looks just like any typical compact camera. Where’s the character?
Actually, I prefer the retro look too, like you alluded to – more character. But I guess Canon’s going more for the modern industrial look, a bit like the Nikon 1 which I reviewed and found to be pretty good. Wonder how the EOS M will perform when it’s finally in production.
12,000 yen for the adapter?! That’s like 100 quid. I might as well just go for the 650D.
Err… you won’t get to enjoy the compactness of the camera body though.
The EOS M sounds like the 650D squashed into a more compact body. So you should get similar image quality (from the same sensor) but in a smaller package. How does its price compare with the 650D?
Well the EOS M will be selling in Japan in September for 79,800 yen (with the EF-M 22mm f/2.0 STM lens) which is about S$1,280. The price in Singapore will probably be slightly higher. The 650D was available in Singapore (on 14 June 2012) for S$1,299 (with the EF-S18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II lens, the EF40mm f/2.8 STM was listed separately at S$299). So the prices are quite similar. But I’d expect Canon to charge higher for the EOS M for the novelty.
