2013 Formula 1 SingTel Singapore Grand Prix in the 6th year

In line with the current climate of going “local”, this year’s Formula 1 motorsport event in Singapore (20-22 September) will be infused with a distinctive local flavour as SingTel, Title Sponsor of the Singapore Grand Prix tries to bring the F1 race experience closer to Singaporeans with Formula 1 Singapore Style.

“The theme, Formula 1 Singapore Style, aims to create an F1 experience where everyone can be involved – both on and off the race tracks. They’ll even have a chance to take the driver’s seat in a race to the chequered flag,” said Mr Allen Lew, Country Chief Officer Singapore, SingTel (center). He is flanked on both sides by local celebrities Qi Yuwu and Joanne Peh.

As per previous years, a series of promotional activities has been planned leading up to the actual race.

The Big Race

The Big Race is an island-wide search for Singapore’s fastest race driver.

Local celebrities and self-proclaimed Formula 1 fans, Joanne Peh, Qi Yuwu, Pei Fen and Romeo Tan kicked off The Big Race today by clocking their fastest lap times in the Official F1 racing simulator game.

There will be a series of four roadshows where the public is invited to clock their fastest lap times in the game.

The fastest racer from each roadshow will team up with a celebrity racer in an ultimate race finale and the winner will be announced on 22 September 2013 to win an F1 driving experience in Europe.

2013 SingTel Grid Girls

In the meantime, Eight fresh-faced ladies aged 18 to 26, have been chosen as this year’s SingTel Grid Girl finalists.

The public can choose their favourite via SMS and online voting to select the top three SingTel Grid Girls.

The Singapore Factor, a series of webisodes hosted by Paul Foster, will put the girls’ knowledge of the Lion City to the test in a trio of uniquely Singaporean challenges.

The top three SingTel Grid Girls will be crowned before thousands of Singaporeans at the Thursday Pit Lane Experience on 19 September 2013.

Local designers leave their mark at this year’s F1

In support of the local fashion scene, SingTel collaborated with PARCO next NEXT – a fashion design incubator project built to nurture award-winning local talent.

Samuel Wong from local menswear label, Evenodd, had the opportunity to inject a fresh and sporty-luxe design to this year’s SingTel Grid Girls’ uniforms.

SingTel also collaborated with established local jewellery and gift designer, Risis, to create this year’s Singapore Grand Prix trophy.

The first Singapore Grand Prix trophy to be designed by a home-grown company, the trophy design was inspired by the iconic Singapore skyline and is accentuated with signature gold swirls to represent the Singapore racetrack from an aerial view.

F1 in Schools

To nurture interest in motorsports among the youth, SingTel sponsored all 24 teams taking part in the F1 in Schools programme this year.

“Each experience was specially created to appeal to Singaporeans of all ages. At the heart of it, Formula 1 Singapore Style is about having every Singaporean feel they own a piece of the race,” Lew explained.

This is a multi-disciplinary challenge in which teams of students aged nine to 19 collaborate to design, manufacture and race miniature cars.

The winning teams from Henderson Secondary School (F1 Competitive Category), Raffles Girls’ Secondary School (Bloodhound Competitive Category) and Yuhua Secondary School (Bloodhound Novice Category) will go on to compete in an international championship.

As a symbol of unity enabling everyone in Singapore to show their support, a limited-edition version of the famous chequered flag featuring a red square has been created to bring forth the uniqueness of the Singapore Grand Prix.

From 21 August 21 until 15 September 15, a digital version of this Formula 1 Singapore Style flag will be hosted online for all to have a go at virtually “waving” the flag on their smartphones.

Fans that “wave” the digital flag stand a chance to win daily prizes.

During race weekend, 60,000 souvenir flags will be distributed at the circuit on 22 September 2013 on a first-come-first-serve basis.
