Huawei Watch GT 2 Pro smartwatch (Night Black).

The Watch GT 2 Pro is the most advanced smartwatch from Huawei, offering a comprehensive range of features, with a number of upgrades from its predecessors.

With 100+ workout modes available – including the recently added golf driving range, skiing, snowboarding and cross country skiing – you’re highly likely to find your favourite workout whatever your sports of choice is.

In addition, the GT 2 Pro offers attentive health features such as its proprietary TruSeen™ 4.0+ heart rate monitoring technology, TruSleep.

The HUAWEI WATCH GT 2 Pro also delivers a reliable 2-week battery life, customisable watch faces, in-built speaker and GPS, as well as notifications from the phone.

In terms of physical design, I like the rugged look of the night black sports edition that I wear – the titanium-cast body is light but strong and sits comfortably on the wrist.

The sapphire glass on the round smartwatch is strong – I’ve accidentally brushed the watch on rough hard concrete surfaces but the glass has remained scratchless.

Apparently the sapphire is nine on the Mohs Hardness Scale (diamond is 10) while gravel is 7-9 – so the Watch GT Pro 2 can survive scratches much better than common glass surfaces on typical smartwatches that reach only 6-6.5 on the scale.

The Watch GT Pro 2 has a ceramic backing like in some traditional watches, to achieve an elegant lustre and robust quality.

According to Huawei, the resistant ceramic backing is made from mixing zirconia with a binding agent and sintering at 1500°C followed by polishing using a diamond cutter head light shine exuding appearance.

If you use a Huawei smartphone, you can easily design and send your own watch faces to the watch with one touch via NFC.

I tried this “One Hop” watch face transfer from the latest Mate 40 Pro smartphone and had great fun personalising the watch face with photos from my phone’s photo gallery.

Alternatively, you could simply choose from a range of classy or funky pre-canned watchfaces that comes with the smartwatch.

For sports, the Huawei Watch GT Pro 2 comes with 100+ workout modes including 19 professional sports workout modes.

Of these 12 are indoor sports (skiing, snowboarding, cross country skiing, golf driving range, running, walking, mountain hike, hiking, trail run, outdoor cycle, open water swimming, triathlon) while seven are indoor sports (walking, running, cycling, swimming indoors, free training, elliptical machine, rowing machine).

Ski and golf fans will be happy that these two sports have been added.

For skiing, regular skiing, cross-country skiing or snowboarding are covered, with the Watch GT 2 Pro providing data such as heart rate, average speed, the maximum slope, track and distance for cross-country skiing, skiing and snowboarding on a ski field.

Since traveling is curtailed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, I had to be satisfied trying out the golf driving range mode that analyses the swing posture and monitors average backswing, average downswing, average swing tempo, average swing speed, fastest swing, Golf (min), calorie, average heart rate.

It also provides visual and slow motion animated swing demonstrations as a reference for the movements.

For other sports, the Watch GT 2 Pro automatically detects six workout modes: outdoor running, outdoor walking, indoor walking, indoor running, elliptical and rower.

Weather information includes daily and weekly forecasts with information about sunrise and sunset, moonrise and moonset, moon phases and tide time.

At the beginning of the workout, you can simply confirm the workout type on the smartwatch without adjusting any other settings.

Once your workout is over, simply tap the End button and the smartwatch will stop tracking and generate a data report.

For runners, the Watch GT 2 Pro comes with over 10 different specially designed running courses that include an introduction course, fat burning running course, endurance-boosting course and cardio workout.

There are also voice reminders that prompt you with instructions for your next steps, so your run won’t be interrupted by you checking your smartwatch all the time.

For hikers and outdoor adventurers, the Watch GT Pro 2 offers a GPS Route Back feature for six outdoor modes: mountain hike, hiking, trail run, outdoor walk, outdoor run and outdoor cycle.

GPS Route Back uses GPS tracking to help guide you back to your starting point to help you orientate yourself, even in the absence of a smartphone.

Simply swipe left twice when the workout modes are in session, and the watch calculates your navigation distance to display remaining distance left, estimated time of arrival and provides voice guidance.

The smartwatch also comes with a built-in barometric altimeter.

One upgrade from its predecessor is the low power consumption TruSeen 4.0+ heart rate monitoring technology which can accurately monitor the heart rates of people of most skin tones through light path results.

It adopts a 6-in-1 LED lens to better converge light, allowing the light to penetrate through blood and bring continuous, rapid and accurate heart rate monitoring that is combined with AI smart heart rate algorithms to provide even more accurate heart rate monitoring.

My Take

The Huawei Watch GT 2 Pro features a premium titanium body design, sapphire glass surface and ceramic backing.

With more than 100 workout modes, TruSeen 4.0+ heart rate monitor, SpO2 measurement, TruSleep 2.0 sleep monitoring, stress measurement and two weeks battery between charges, the smartwatch offers a sports concierge on the wrist in a stylish and rugged design.

I like that when I jog, the watch warns me when my heart rate goes beyond a certain threshold – like three times my resting heart rate.

The Huawei Watch GT 2 Pro tracks heart rate in real-time, and monitors sleep quality and stress levels throughout the day.

SpO2 monitoring detects when the blood oxygen saturation becomes too low – especially when exercising in high altitude areas – so that the wearer can take a rest or supplement oxygen to the body.

Battery life was exemplary – I have been getting more than two weeks between charges over the past few months, with 24-hr heart rate monitoring, sleep monitoring, weekly workouts of more than 90 minutes, 30 minutes of music playback a week, and notifications and GPS turned on.

The watch comes with a free wireless charger (worth S$78), but it can be charged with any mainstream smartphone wireless charging station or wireless power bank with a five-minute charging session giving the smartwatch up to 10 hours of use.

The Huawei Watch GT 2 Pro also supports Reverse Wireless Charging – so Huawei smartphone users can charge their watch wirelessly from their phones.
