Prices start from $1,430 for the RIMOWA Limbo Multiwheel® Electronic Tag and $1,710 for RIMOWA Topas Multiwheel® Electronic Tag (price may vary according to size and luggage model).
Subiksha Krishnan was at the launch in Singapore and reports below.
The RIMOWA Electronic Tag lets travelers use their smartphones to check in their suitcase from home and drop it off quickly at the airport without fuss or time pressure.
Where to purchase
The RIMOWA Electronic Tag will be available from RIMOWA Singapore stores located at Mandarin Gallery #01-11, The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands Casino Level #B2M-217/218 and Suntec City (North Wing) #01-476.
The RIMOWA app activates and personalises the RIMOWA Electronic Tag and the airline app identifies the personalised piece of luggage.
The data for the booked flight is sent to the selected piece of luggage via Bluetooth and the data appears on the integrated Electronic Tag display.
The suitcase is then checked in and placed within seconds in the check-in stations.
The Electronic Tag gives one freedom while travelling by allowing users to check in their suitcase wherever they are.
The tag replaces the conventional paper label with an innovative data module that receives luggage data from the airline.
The size and display corresponds to the typical paper labels we see now.
The user can also receive the luggage data for their flight and transfer it directly to the suitcase easily, saving time.
The RIMOWA Electronic Tag eliminates unnecessary stress and waiting as well.
Once the app checks in the luggage, it can be placed within seconds in the semi or fully automatic drop-off stations.
This gives travelers more time for themselves and does not involve waiting in long queues at the airport. It is fast and uncomplicated.
The tag will also continue to show the tag display even when the batteries run out thus, ensuring that the luggage is transported to the correct location.
Launch with Lufthansa
RIMOWA has partnered Lufthansa Airlines for the inaugural launch of the revolutionary product.
The airline features the luggage check-in feature on its mobile app, taking the lead with RIMOWA towards revolutionising modern air travel.
Sale of the RIMOWA Electronic Tag started at the beginning of 2016.
Also, to ensure the security of the luggage, the electronic display is designed to be almost unchangeable unless one presses the button located on the inside of the suitcase.
This increases the security measures of the suitcase.
Moreover, the display is customizable and the user can choose to display one of the templates provided by RIMOWA or one of their own photos from their camera roll.
The RIMOWA Electronic Tag is available for all of RIMOWA’s suitcase collections except for Salsa Air and Classic Flight.

Operation
The Electronic Tag, built by Netronix®, delivers a fuss-free travel experience with a simple two-step process.
Simply check-in your luggage via any supporting airline app on the go and deposit it at the airport prior to boarding.
Partnership with EVA Air
Dieter Morszeck, president and CEO of the global luxury luggage brand RIMOWA, has just made the official announcement of the RIMOWA Electronic Tag’s collaboration with EVA Air at the Future Travel Experience (FTE) Asia EXPO in Singapore.
EVA Air is the first Asian airline to use RIMOWA Electronic Tag systemwide and will provide this service from 1 December 2016.
The two global players are working together to offer their customers even greater security and convenience when travelling by air through the integrated luggage system.
This new technology has been successfully used by Lufthansa since the beginning of the year, attracting steadily growing interest from passengers and airlines alike.
In addition to a digital boarding pass, passengers will receive digital luggage information from the airline for their booked flight.
The digital boarding information is transferred from your smartphone to the luggage via Bluetooth, and immediately reflected on the tag powered by an E Ink® Mobius display.
Advantages
In terms of size and appearance, the luggage information displayed on the electronic data module corresponds to today’s paper labels, including the green EU stripe required by customs (compulsory for all flights departing from European airports).
This makes the transition from analogue to digital very simple.
The important information is protected from moisture, heat, cold, shocks and vibration and cannot be accidentally torn off, unlike a paper label, giving you peace of mind as flying with baggage becomes more secure and convenient.
