New arrivals: Huawei P8 flagship smartphone and wearables

Huawei launched its Android flagship smartphone – the P8 – during CommunicAsia2015 and showcased three wearable products – the Huawei TalkBand B2, TalkBand N1 and the Huawei Watch. Prices below.

Richard Yu, CEO of the Huawei Consumer Business Group introduced the Huawei P8 smartphone for the Southern Pacific Region at the Marina Bay Sands in Singapore.

For Huawei, the Southern Pacific Region comprises Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia, New Zealand, Philippines and Singapore.

The P8 was first launched globally in London in April this year and is part of the company’s transition from a B2B entity to a consumer centric brand.

The three wearable products – the Huawei TalkBand B2, TalkBand N1 and the Huawei Watch (currently under development) – were all launched at the Mobile World Congress 2015 in March 2015.

The Huawei P8 has a 5.2-inch FHD screen with 1920 x 1080 pixels (424ppi, 16 million colours) and capable of playing 1080p video.

The LTE smartphone is driven by a Kirin 930 Octa-Core 64-bit 2GHz processor with 3GB RAM and 16GB memory.

P8 ships with Android 5.0 Lollipop and is powered by a 2680mAh battery.

Huawei is particularly proud of the P8’s camera prowess, which is based on a 13-megapixel rear camera and 8-megapixel front camera.

The rear camera boasts OIS (Optical Image Stabilisation), RBGW sensor, DSLR-level Image Signal Processor, F2.0 lens, 1080p video recording and playback, and dual colour temperature flash.

The Huawei P8 boasts the world’s first four-color RGBW sensor which enhances brightness by 32 percent in high contrast lighting situations and reduces it by 78 percent in low light environments.

There are four professional-quality low-light shooting modes that includes Light Painting mode and Director mode.

Light painting mode leverages Huawei P8’s manual camera shutter for slow shutter speed effects to deliberately create motion-blur effects and light painting effects.

Director mode allows consumers to direct and control up to three other Android phones when shooting a video scene from four angles simultaneously, and also synchronise video clip editing.

Some interesting features of the P8 user interface include the following:

  • Double-tapping with a knuckle captures a full-length screen shot.
  • Drawing a circle on the screen quickly captures content.
  • “Search phone by voice” function allows users to call out to their misplaced smartphone, which will respond through its speaker to help its owner locate it.

In terms of signal connectivity, the compact and powerful dual-antenna design plus rapid switching technology allows the P8 to instantly switch between antennas, ensuring a continuous strong network connection.

The smartphone uses Huawei-proprietary Signal+ technology to enhance call connection rate, even when users are travelling on a train at a speed of up to 300 kilometers per hour.

The smaller P8lite has a 5-inch fully laminated IPS touchscreen with a 7.7mm thin body.

The smartphone is equipped with 5MP front-facing and 13MP rear-facing cameras.

Driven by a 1.2 GHz 64-digit octa-core Kirin 620 chipset, Huawei P8lite offers fast 4G LTE Cat4 connectivity with a download speed of 150Mpbs.

The TalkBand B2 is a Bluetooth headset & health tracker for business, while the TalkBand N1 is a Bluetooth headset for sports & music lovers.

The Huawei Watch has a display at 400 x 400 pixels resolution in 286 ppi at a 10,000:1 high contrast ratio.

The TalkBand N1 comes in three stylish colors: Silver, Grey and Red.

The Huawei Watch features a 1.4 inch AMOLED, scratch-proof and water-proof, fully circular design at 42mm diameter.

The touch-sensitive sapphire crystal lens cover works with gloved or wet hands.

The Huawei Watch offers 40 customizable watch faces ranging from a classic analog to digital, or even a tracking design that displays health data including calories ingested, steps taken and more.

Huawei Watch comes in three colors: gold, silver and black with a full range of materials and watch straps.

Powered by Android Wear, Huawei Watch is packed with a range of health tracking functions and a built-in advanced heart rate monitor sensor, 6-Axis sensor, barometer sensor, touch motor, and built-in microphone.

Paired with a smartphone running Android 4.3 or higher, Huawei Watch enables users to easily receive SMS, email, calendar, app, and phone call notifications.

The 6-Axis sensor also enables the watch to automatically identify a user’s state of motion and measures sports data provided by their activity – walking/running/climbing/cycling.
