LG CSR – Creating smiles one photo at a time

Earlier this year, LG Singapore worked with three individuals – a photographer, a doctor and a pharmacist – to provide Pocket Photos, LG’s smart mobile printers, for a self-directed medical mission where they provided free medical care to the people living in the slums in Chennai, India.

How did the the Pocket Photos help?

The LG Pocket Photo 2 (PD239) was a huge attraction and helped to break the ice with the local people and keep them entertained as they queued to seek medical treatment.

The photos served as ice-breakers to help remove the reserve of the locals towards the volunteers.

The locals loved to be photographed and were mesmerised that something as small as a portable battery pack was able to print photos instantly.

“The LG Pocket Photo PD-239 was by itself a huge attraction. The locals all loved to be photographed, but when they saw the printer they were simply amazed that something as small as a portable battery pack could print their photo – I certainly felt like a street magician. It often helped to break the ice and keep the queues entertained,” recalled Simon Chan, the photographer who went with his two friends.

The 5-day, 3-pax medical mission to Chennai in India started on 21 September and ended on 25 September, 2014.

While medical care is free in India, there is a considerable waiting period and local perception is that foreign medical care is superior, even when drugs are actually purchased locally.

With this, the primary purpose of the mission was to bring medical care and hope to the people who need it the most.

Leading corporations all over the world are actively trying to make the world a better place by using their skills and resources to help and support the communities locally and around the world.

At the heart of doing good is the concept of connecting to people and understanding what they need and being at their service.

This was why LG sponsored the mobile printers as part of its commitment towards its Corporate Social Responsibility.

10 years after the Tsunami hit Chennai in 2004, the population of eight million is still reeling from its aftereffects.

It’s always good to see large corporations taking their corporate citizenship seriously and harness their resources towards the poor and less fortunate.

Kudos to LG for contributing its technology in a simple but effective way.
